Jennifer Aniston Does ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’

Jen helps Dave tie one on
Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Jennifer Aniston was one of the guests on The Late Show with David Letterman last night and was on hand to do some promo work for her new movie Marley & Me which opens in theaters here in the US on December 25. Jen, the ever-so-kind guest, thought it would be a nice thing to bring Dave an early Xmas gift … and presented him with the red, white and blue-striped Brooks Brothers tie that she wore for the coverphoto of the new issue of GQ magazine. In return, Letterman grilled Aniston on pretty much everything he could think of including her relationship with John Mayer:

She has just bared almost every inch of her body on the cover of a men’s magazine. But if David Letterman was hoping to catch Jennifer Aniston in an equally revealing mood, he was sadly mistaken. The former Friends actress appeared as a guest on the US star’s late night chat show to promote her new film Marley and Me on Wednesday night. However, it was not long before the topic quite naturally turned to the star’s love life. And it was at that moment that things turned a little awkward between the pair. Dressed in a pink mini jumper-dress which only just managed to skim the tops of her thighs, Aniston inexplicably came over all coy as the host fired off a series of questions about her guitarist boyfriend John Mayer. The actress quickly replied: “I think it’s all been said at this point.” But Letterman dutifully plugged away, asking why she thought people were interested in her personal life. “I don’t know. Just ask yourself why you asked the question,” Aniston shot back. The 39-year-old eventually told him that they met at a Hollywood party, but was clearly uncomfortable as the host kept asking more questions. She attempted to end the conversation by giving short answers and laughing off Letterman’s remarks. Finally, he admitted defeat as Aniston continued to clam up. “I’m an idiot,” he said. “I can’t even go any further with this.” But the awkwardness was not over. The host then ogled pictures of the naked actress writhing with male models in her recent GQ shoot. The actress, who has appeared naked in several magazines over the years including another cover-shoot for GQ in 2005, shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She again looked far from impressed as the pictures were held up to the audience. “Oh Dave what else are you gonna pull out of that basket?” she said as she desperately tried to deflect attention away from the pictures, the most famous of which features her posing provocatively in a striped necktie. “You’ve got some explaining to do here,” he said. Again trying to change the subject, Aniston reached behind her chair to get “an early Christmas present”, producing the same tie that she wore for the shoot. Letterman immediately ripped off his own tie and as his band played strippers’ music, put on Aniston’s gift. “Oh this is exciting – I’m dressing Dave!” Aniston said as she helped him. “This is an historic moment in my career. That was fantastic!”

Okay … so technically, Dave grilled Jen before she gave him that fabulous gift but, I must say, she handled herself like a champ. I suppose I don’t understand why a celebrity would choose to clam up about personal questions when they appear on national television even if they are there to talk about non-personal things. I mean, seriously … but, then again, when you’re as big a star as Jennifer Aniston is you can really get away with stonewalling as much as you want. Personally, I think it was damn cool of Jen to give Dave that now-infamous Brooks Brothers tie (tho, I suspect it wasn’t the actual tie she wore for the shoot). Incidentally, if YOU would like to buy this tie for yourself or for someone you love, you can order it online from the company directly HERE. It’s on sale from $150 to $112.50 — what a bargain! After the jump and for those of you who missed watching it on TV, check out Jen’s full interview with David Letterman last night …

The 2008 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations Have Been Announced

The usual suspects
Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Last week we learned which movies and which actors garnered nominations for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards and today we learn which movies and actors nabbed themselves noms for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year as those nominations were announced here in LA this morning. Not surprising, the group of movies that have been buzzing with rumors of Oscar noms managed to be nominated for SAG awards … as well as the late Heath Ledger, who continues to rack up accolades for his stunning performance as The Joker in this summer’s blockbuster film Batman: The Dark Knight:

The Catholic school drama “Doubt” led contenders Thursday for the Screen Actors Guild Awards with five nominations, including honors for Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. The late Heath Ledger also earned a supporting-actor nomination, whose maniacal turn as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” has made him an Academy Awards front-runner. The Batman blockbuster also had a nomination for best stunt ensemble. Streep has a lead-actress nomination, while Hoffman, Adams and Davis are competing in supporting categories for “Doubt,” a war-of-wills tale between an old-school nun and a progressive priest. “Doubt” also has a nomination for overall cast performance, along with the romantic fantasy “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” the Richard Nixon saga “Frost/Nixon,” the gay-rights drama “Milk” and the poor-boy-makes-good tale “Slumdog Millionaire.” Kate Winslet grabbed two nominations, best actress for the domestic drama “Revolutionary Road” and supporting actress for the Holocaust-themed story “The Reader.” Other best-actress nominees were: Anne Hathaway, “Rachel Getting Married”; Angelina Jolie, “Changeling”; and Melissa Leo, “Frozen River.” Nominated for best actor were: Richard Jenkins, “The Visitor”; Frank Langella, “Frost/Nixon”; Sean Penn, “Milk”; Brad Pitt, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”; and Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler.” The 15th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS Jan. 25, four weeks before the Academy Awards.

Of this reported list of nominees there don’t seem to be any surprises … I think we’re getting a good feel for which movies and actors are likely to secure nominations for the Academy Awards (which will be announced next month). So many of my favorite films this year are all vying for the big awards that I think I’ll be pretty happy with whichever films win the big ones … but I am really, really pulling for Heath Ledger to first, be nominated for an Academy Award and second, to win his nomination. Of the supporting performances I’ve seen this year, no one else comes close to surpassing his amazing performance in The Dark Knight. While some may dismiss Ledger’s posthumous nominations as pity or some other ridiculous notion, I honestly feel that he turned in an Oscar-worthy performance. At the very least, he is sure to win one of these major awards that he has already been nominated for. His loss is still so sad, this would be a very fitting and well-deserved way to honor his memory. I guess we’ll see. The Beckham Bunch Return To The Motherland For Xmas

A family affair
Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Lest you think the Beckham brood was planning on celebrating Xmas in the sunny, warm climes of Southern California … think again. Les Beckhams rounded up their kiddies, packed their bags and made their way to London, England earlier today where they will be spending the holidays with family and friends ahead of Becks’s move to Italy to play professional soccer there in the new year. Besides, as I mentioned earlier, there ain’t no sun nor warmth to speak of here in SoCal so it makes sense that they’d want to be home for the holidays:

Victoria and David Beckham made the perfect pair today when they arrived at Heathrow airport in matching trilby hats. Victoria, 34, teamed her hat with a detective-style coat and grey boots while her husband opted for a leather jacket and jeans. Mrs Beckham first sported the look – reminiscent of Pink Panther actor Peter Sellers as fictional French sleuth Inspector Clouseau – during a day out with pal Katie Holmes and her husband Tom Cruise last month. She has been spotted in the outfit on several subsequent occasions – and today David opted for the same look. Katie Holmes later chose the look for a day out in Manhattan and now Victoria’s stylish husband has followed suit. The couple have returned to the country for a visit with their children Brooklyn, 9, Romeo, 6, and Cruz, 3, just weeks before LA Galaxy star David, 33, begins a two-month stint at Italian football club AC Milan. “It will literally be for two months, because the season finishes here in LA and David will then go to train with AC Milan. We are so supportive, myself and the children. It’s a great opportunity for him. It will be a wonderful experience for the family,” she said. This week the mother-of-three, who has become a worldwide style icon, admitted that she had an unlikely inspiration for her distinctive look – the British school teacher. Victoria was speaking out against suggestions that her image has changed to fit in with laid-back LA style since her move to California last year. Essex-born Victoria told Company magazine: “It hasn’t, not at all. I am very British in my style. Think school teacher. I love pencil skirts and fitted blouses, classic cut dresses and well fitted jeans mixed with classic tailoring.” Victoria, who launched her own fashion line in September at New York Fashion Week, also revealed that her look is influenced more by old fashioned style rather than the latest trend. “The 1950s icons had such class. I love the glamour and sophisticated style of Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn,” she said.

It’s unclear how long the family will stay in England but I suspect they may travel with Becks to Milan after the holidays to help set him up there since he’ll be living there for the first 2 months of 2009. I suspect Vicki B. and the boys will return to SoCal sometime in the new year so that the kiddies can get back to school but methinks that Becks will be away from LA for a very long time … which is a bummer. Ah well, I’m sure the lovely Italians will take good care of our dear Becks. Remember, he’s only there on loan … we’re gonna want him back when his stint with AC Milan is completed so … don’t get too attached, ya hear?

Las Vegas Gets Buried In Snow

It's the end of the world as we know it?
Thursday, December 18th, 2008

How’s this for some pretty shocking news to start out the day … Las Vegas, NV — the famous desert resort that was converted from an arid wasteland into America’s adult arcade/playground — got covered in SNOW yesterday and early this morning … and the forecast is for more snow to come. If this ain’t proof that the world’s ecosystem is going all haywire, then I don’t know what else is — talk about your inconvenient truths. Check out these amazing and mind boggling photos of a snow-covered Vegas:

A rare pre-winter storm brought Las Vegas its heaviest snowfall in nearly three decades, closing the airport and freeways as several inches coated marquees on the Las Vegas Strip and weighed down palm trees. The storm Wednesday and early Thursday also dumped snow on rain on much of southern California and parts of Nevada outside Las Vegas. The National Weather Service measured 3.6 inches of snow overnight at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport, and meteorologist Jerome Jacques said about 2 inches was left before dawn on the ground near the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. “Snow is not unknown in the Las Vegas valley. On average we get 1/2 inch of snow a year,” Jacques said. “But this amount made it a significant storm. We haven’t had this amount of snow since 1979

The weather service recorded 7.5 inches of snow at McCarran on Jan. 30-31, 1979. The snow Wednesday prompted the cancellation of all flights in and out of Vegas. Visitors parked and posed for pictures wearing hooded jackets. Other parts of Nevada were forecast to receive as much as 8 inches of snow in the second winter storm this week to drop snow on the desert city. Snowfall is common in nearby mountains hills, but not on the Strip or surrounding neighborhoods.

Wow! These are images that I never thought I’d ever see … the Las Vegas strip covered with snow. You know, it was cold in LV over the weekend when my friends and I were there but wasn’t anywhere near snow conditions. Here in LA last night, the temps. fell into the low 40s. I half expected to open my blinds this morning and find snow on the ground here as well. Right now, we’re only about 10 degrees away from freezing! Oy! I hope it’s warm or at least bearable wherever in the world YOU are today … cuz it’s cold here on the West Side. It really is beginning to look a lot like Xmas.
