‘Twilight’ Premieres
Twilight is almost upon us, y’all … we are mere 3 days away from the movie’s official opening (well, 2 days away if you figure in the first midnight showings on Thursday) and anticipation for the film is reaching a fevered pitch. The movie had its official Hollywood premiere at Mann Village and Bruin Theaters in Westwood, CA last night where the principal stars were joined by their celebrity cohorts on the red carpet … oh yeah, and about 600+ “fanpires” who came out to shriek and scream for the arriving cast members, getting louder and louder until Robert Pattinson’s arrival caused the excitement to go supersonic (poor R. Pattz even went “completely deaf”). Here are a few pics from last night’s premiere arrivals and some info about the night’s festivities:

Hundreds of shrieking fans — mostly teenage girls — lined the streets outside the Mann Village and Bruin Theatres on Monday for a chance to peek at the stars attending the Los Angeles premiere of “Twilight.” Some enthusiasts of the popular vampire literary series-turned-movie camped out overnight, while many arrived at dawn to secure a place in line. “I’m on basic motor functions right now,” actor Robert Pattinson, who plays sexy vamp Edward, said amid fans’ screams. More than 600 people were allowed inside special holding areas along both sides of the premiere’s red carpet. The self-proclaimed fanpires gawked, squealed and begged for autographs and photos with the stars. Others spilled out beyond the barricades and across the street from the premiere. Many held up handmade signs. Most just wanted face time. What question did they ask the most? “‘What’s it like kissing vampires?’” said actress Kristen Stewart, who plays human teenager Bella. Marie Sheranian, 16, and Brianna Matheson, 17, came from Simi Valley, Calif., to catch a glimpse of Pattinson, the 22-year-old actor who became a heartthrob after winning the role of Edward. The two “Twilight” fans created T-shirts professing their devotion for Pattinson and brought crates to stand on in hopes of seeing the actor’s face — or even the top of his hair — from above the crowd. “My heart is gonna explode,” Sheranian said from atop a crate. Not everyone in the horde was a howling teenage girl. Several teenage boys were sprinkled throughout the crowd. And there were even a few parents — including the founders of TwilightMoms.com, who left their children and husbands at home to attend the premiere. Pia Castillo said she came all the way from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to see the film’s bloodsuckers in person. “It’s shocking something I came up with could inspire all this,” said “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer. The red carpet was buzzing about possible sequels. Meyer has written three other “Twilight” novels. Pattinson said he signed on for the film thinking it would be part of a trilogy, and he knows a script for a second film has been written. Stewart said she originally heard the cast might reunite to film both the second and third sequels at the same time, but now they might be filmed separately. “It has to make a certain amount of money, like $150 million, to be able to afford the sequel,” director Catherine Hardwicke said. “So we really don’t know yet.”
LOL. I’d be surprised if Twilight didn’t make $150 million in it’s opening weekend, considering all this insane hype. But, more realistically, it prolly won’t make that much money in one weekend but I think it’s a bit silly to say that they’re not sure about future sequels … this movie will make more than enough to justify the sequels to come. I have to say, I’m so impressed that all of this crazed excitement has been generated by a book … once again, my spirit is heartened by the fact that all of this rabid fandom comes not from video games or pop star worship — all of this excitement comes from reading books. The naysayers have much to say about all this “silliness” over vampires but I am most taken by the fact that books have inspired this insanity. Kids are reading! I really do hope that Twilight exceeds all expectations. The more success that movies like this have, the more credence will be paid to the actual written word. It won’t be long now.

I’m not going to see this movie and I have no interest in reading the books (I read through Cleolinda’s fab synopsis of it).
But, I hope one day, that people higher their standards for what kids are reading, instead of being happy that they’re reading at all. They might as well be reading Cosmo over Twilight, at least it’s better written.

Kristen Stewart needs to fire whoever lets her keep her hair up like that. Totally doesn’t do her face ANY favors whatsoever. Why can’t she let it loose like in her photo shoots? Rest of the cast looks good ;)

Jem, whether you like Stephenie Meyer’s writing style or not, I think you are prejudging the books if you have not read them and it makes your argument for your opinion of the books insufficient. I have a very high reading standard and would have no beef with anyone picking up Twilight for enjoyment just as I’m sure other people pick up what they prefer for reading for enjoyment. It’s not like these kids are picking up trashy novels (or mags) that they shouldn’t be reading for years. Twilight bounds into a world of fantasy that seems to enthrall most who have picked up any of the books. And I think you’re absolutely right Trent, it’s amazing that children are reading and at that good literature!
Anyway…Kristen and Rob both look terrified at this premier, like no one could’ve prepped them for what was coming. Cam looks confident…Taylor looks pretty good too!

ok cam is hot. but am i the only person on the planet who thinks robert is super UNattractive??
November 18th, 2008 at 7:49 am
Kristen is in one of the biggest, if not the biggest movies of the year, and she always looks annoyed. And that’s what’s really annoying.

Cheers for the written word!
On another note, I bet Jennie Garth is happy not to be the only bread winner in the family. Sparky got a job!
November 18th, 2008 at 8:10 am
I agree Alisa! It is killing me that she seems so angry all of the time when this movie and promoting this movie, etc, is going to launch her into major stardom. The angst is getting old.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:12 am
yay!!! I cannot wait! I already have my midnight tickets! I agree Trent, It’s awesome that these books have so many younger and older people reading! Reading is one of my all time favorite things to do :)
November 18th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Jenny is lookin’ FIERCE. I doubt she cares if the Face has a job or not, cuz I’m betting he lays the pipe pretty damn well. They’re such a cute couple! *pinches their cheeks* And RP is hot, hands down, but only when he shaves that scruff.

I am so glad you got caught up in the Twilight hype! I was hoping by premiere time you would be obsessed too, and lookie what happened!! xoxoxo
November 18th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Im so freaking upset that that ‘twilight’ isn’t going to be shown in any of the cinemas ,here in Pakistan! :’((( i feel like cryinnggg, but i’ll wait for the dvd to come outt :D :D

if TRENT could pass one thing along from his web blog to KRISTEN STEWART it would be to cheer up. It really freaking annoys me to see her look so miserable all the time in every photo shoot, every interview, or candid shot the papparazzi catch. When I found out they cast her as Bella, I wasn’t happy at all, but I said hey, maybe this wont be so bad, maybe she can play a good Bella. Well, I sure hope her performance is more than run of the mill, cuz with the way she has been presenting herself to the public lately, I am a bit less excited and a lil less than thrilled to see her as Bella. CHEER THE FRICK UP KRISTEN! Geeze -.-

I can’t belive how big this has gotten. I read the first book, when it first came out. No one I talked to knew about it. Now its soo popular. As it should be I love this book series. Mind you I have always loved all things vampier. Its just this book series is so well written, and I love the story line and the place it brings you when you read it. Its like being there. I love it, and I’m 21 :)
November 18th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Sooo..I have a 12 year old boy and have been urging him to read this series..I haven’t read it myself but have heard such great things..My question is, would a boy be into this? Isn’t it kind of a love story? That’s what I get from all the hype around the movie..He’s just finishing The Pigman and needs another book, but he’s so picky that it’s hard finding stuff to keep his attention! What do y’all think?
November 18th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I have read all the books including the incomplete Edward’s point of you of the first book Midnight Sun. I am alomost 29 and I am so thrilled to see this movie. Its not just for teens. Even my mom is dying to see it. I bought tickets for Friday morning already!
November 18th, 2008 at 10:23 am
ahhhhhhhh omfg.
midnight showing baby. i’m so excitedddd!!!! [:
and Kendra, I know plenty of guys who have read the books and really like them. However, it is first and foremost a love story, but I think that with a certain maturity level, any boy would like it too!
November 18th, 2008 at 10:47 am
I agree Trent- its awesome that all this hype is over a book! and though it may not be shakespear, its NO cosmo. I cannot wait until my daughter is old enough to read these books. And we do not need “higher standards” of reading. thats the most ridiculous thing i’ve ever heard. bit snobby, too.
anywyas, i cannot wait for the movie! buying my tickets tonight ;)
November 18th, 2008 at 10:58 am
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-that is all, lol… :)
November 18th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Yeah for books. Its worth noting that they had this kind of hype when the books came out too so its not just about the movie. And I agree with other posters on Kristen Stewart’s angst. She’s great but I cant stand reading her interviews. If she doesnt perform then I am forced to hate her for being such a brat about it. And if she cant handle the fans then why did she pick a movie based on a book that has such a devoted fan base?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I just started reading the first book of the saga and im already hooked. From the trailer to the actual movie it seems like alot of it will be the same. Trent is right, its about time that kids are getting into reading, I mean look at the Harry Potter mania!!! I will wait till the movie is out on DVD just cause I know its going to be crazy out there. I can’t wait to finish my first book and start on the others….LOVE LOVE LOVE the story line and Im glad I picked up the book..
November 18th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Oh and the whole Kristan thing, i believe that just the way she is. I mean she basically doesnt haven’t to get into charater for alot of her roles….I mean look at her role in The Messagners she was that out of whack chick that was always in bad moods…..BUt fuck her as long as she makes the movie good im happy
November 18th, 2008 at 11:40 am
OMG I CANT WAIT!!! I already bought my ticket, now its just waiting =( Im so nervous that the lines will be so long i’ll miss part of the movie, and i really really hope not, because then ill have to pay ten dollars again and wait for the next showing, which i would do anyways, but id rather get in easily the first time around! I hope people dont scream in the theater, they will be damned if they make me miss something! Rob looks great! he always looks completely terrified in his interviews and at appearances but i guess all of us twilighters mobbing around them can be scary =D But we assure you Rob, we dont want to hurt you, just meet you! haha I wish kristen would look happy though she always looks pissed and annoyed at every appearance, in every picture, and in every interview! It makes it seem like she doesnt care about this film at all! well, maybe she doesnt, who knows!

To each his own. I’ve read the books, and while I tend to side with jem’s argument, I don’t think you can simply dismiss a book with such an impact. I do, however, have to say that I’m not particularly fond of this series. I would much prefer a book with character development, fewer grammatical errors, and one that has a bit more literary merit. I

I’ve read the books and I’m not the biggest fan. I understand why many other people love the series but it bothers me a bit when they compare this to Harry Potter. Just throwing that out there…

I gotta say I wasn’t going to jump on the Twilight bandwagon but a friend convinced me and now I’m feverishly trying to get the book finished in time for the movie! Although I will say that as I read it (I’m around p. 200) one part of my brain is wanting them to just jump on each other and the other part of me is wondering if Bella has never seen Buffy since we all know from that and Angel that unfortunately Vampires and humans aren’t really a good idea… Ok I need to go finish the book now before my head explodes!

I think something that everyone has failed to consider is the mysoginy associated with this series. Vampire culture aside, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was able to transport you into another “fantasy” realm without relegating females to the character of hopeless victim. Bella Swan’s character is underdeveloped and stereotypical; she does nothing but wait around for her vampire lover Edward to come by and take her somewhere magical and dangerous, which in itself is not interesting, but she also allows herself to be abused physically and emotionally by Edward, setting an alarming trend for the thousands of young girls reading the novel. Adults, I would hope, are more critical of these sorts of themes. If you know a young woman who is reading this series, talk to her about her perceptions on the relationships between men and women, and ensure that popular culture doesn’t infiltrate our way of life any more than it already has.
And don’t yell at me for being on a pop culture website, I’m interested in all sorts of things and at least I’m media critical.

LOL Pattinson doesn’t look so enthusiastic about all the attention he’s receiving.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:21 am
what about harry potter? millions of kids, teens, AND adults read that series. it’s better written and more interesting. twilight will never be as big as harry potter.
November 19th, 2008 at 9:23 am
oh yah, and twilight is not ” good literature.” it’s about a love sick girl who would do anything for a guy.
November 19th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I will NOT be seeing this movie…I read the series and liked it, but I think Kristin Stewart as Bella is a TERRIBLE choice and I hate that she looks miserable whenever anyone photographs her. I like the way I pictured this book in my head much better than what I’ve seen in the previews of this movie.
Also, while I did like the books, Zoe is right…Bella is consistently the victim, and she can’t hold herself together without her man…its not a healthy thing to teach young girls that if they don’t have a man in their lives they have nothing at all.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:43 am
I agree with Trent. Even though people may be worried about the characters [Bella being so wrapped up in Edward for instance], all I know is that my little sister [she's 16] hated reading. She’s been reading the 5th book in the Harry Potter series for 2 years now. It’s so hard for her to stay focused. I read Twilight and I begged her to start reading it and a couple of days later she asked for my book. She started reading it on a Wednesday and was finished with it by Saturday, then she asked me for the second book. I was so proud of her because for her to be able to do that was a really big deal. I’m totally happy there is so much hype over this movie, hopefully it will make kids who haven’t read the books get out there and read them. I know after I saw the movie I’d do that because I absolutely hate sitting around to find out whats going to happen lol.
