‘Pregnant Man’ Thomas Beatie & Family Visit Spain
Family vacay

The famed “Pregnant Man” Thomas Beatie and his family, who recently announced to the world that he is pregs again with his second child, made their way to Spain this week to appear on Spanish TV to talk about the birth of their first child Susan Juliette (who was born back in June) and the impending birth of their second child. Here are a couple pics of the family, Thomas, Nancy and Susan, as they made their arrival in Madrid, Spain on Friday:

Nice to see that the Beatie family is up for taking family vacations like this … cuz, you know, it’s totally normal for families to be flown around the world to appear on live TV. Honestly, one might expect a family like this to capitalize more on their fame but they do tend to keep a relatively low profile (appearances on Spanish TV notwithstanding). They may not make a traditional family but they sure do look happy together. I wonder where they’ll pop up next.

It kind of rubs me the wrong way the way they are advertising “her” as the pregnant MAN. She chopped off her boobs, took male hormones yet kept her female body parts to have children of her own. I am not saying s/he does not have a right to have children because everyone DOES, but I just think that dubbing her as the pregnant MAN is a tad insulting. All s/he is is a WOMAN (with a beard) having a baby. Not big news.

Exactly TIffany, I couldn’t agree more. This is not a MAN…it’s a person who was born a woman living as a man. Everyone can stop acting like this is a big deal that GUY gave birth. A guy did not have a kid. A woman did. A woman who has chosen to act like a man. So stupid.

I agree with you Tiffany. It’s a bit like a circus this whole story.

i couldnt agree with you guys more…i was so confused when the story with the first kid came out until i looked into it more and found out the facts.

but legally he is a man. he is living his life like a man. and he had a baby. i think its just really disrespectful for people to get mad at him for stating what happened. he’s just doing what he has to do to have a child. even if you thinks its weird or wrong or whatever, its really not your place to say that. and trent is right, they are not capitalizing on their fame. they are just making a family, a right that everyone has. leave it at that.
they look happy and i’m happy for them. :)

Katt makes a good point, but doesn’t having a baby negate his decision to live as a man? If there is one thing that definitive, irrefutably differentiates men from women, it’s the ability to bear children. I’m a complete supporter of trans people and very respectful of using the pronouns that they choose, but it seems like Mr. Beatie doesn’t understand what it means to be a man. So to say this is a pregnant ‘man,’ I have to agree with Tiffany that using the male pronoun in this case is more than a little bit misleading. Legally, socially, whatever–the point is men can’t have babies. If you chose to call yourself a man, you should accept that people will also be free to call you out on it when you embrace the largest separating trait between the sexes.

I agree completely with Tiffany. But also a bit with Katt.
S/he is not “technically” (no better word) a man. S/he’s transgendered and all I know that is s/he was just in the male development when s/he went into labor. I’m sorry I don’t have any good words for this, but, remember that s/he decided to live as a man and I think s/he would appreciate it if we called her/him a MAN. But yeah Tiffany; s/he just did anything possible to LOOK like a man. I personally think it has something to do with fame, (not that anyone would want to be known for this) but they seem to be trying awfully hard to live normally.
All I can say is . . . poor child, she’s going to get teased when she’s older. :( But they seem very happy. So let them be. (:

Most of the world still does not understand the basic issue of transgender – so when the media constantly says ‘PREGNANT MAN’ in every news piece about this couple … it is not helpful. This all started when Oprah got the exclusive and introduced them onto her show announcing “A man is pregnant” (the audience gasped). I was surprised at how Oprah presented that interview (in a very tabloid way). This story has been sensationalised by media who have reported this as a funny freak show, rather than using it as a chance to explain the issue of transgendered people to an uneducated public … There are more trans people in the world than most people would realise …

  9. Marnisha says:

I know several people who are homosexual, some transgendered some not. I guess the main thing that society has an issue with is this:
You were born a woman and made certain changes to become a man. You felt you should have been born a man, or something similar to that. Then you decide you want to give birth. Men don’t give birth, men don’t want to give birth, that’s a woman thing. To give birth you must be a woman. This leads many people to believe that maybe you are not ready to be a man, completely.
I think that is the issue. When you want to be treated as a man, you must act as a man. Giving a birth, not manly at all. How can you expect someone to treat you and respect you as someone, you are not acting like. The whole thing was played like a circus sideshow because that’s what it is to a point. Imagine this young girl five years in the future in school, with her pregnant dad. The trauma for the child is what I think of. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. If he wants to be a man, be a man.

    NOT a man!

  11. K says:

did they have a donor? this confuses me haha

  12. lambman says:

I disagree with Kat, I respect and support transgendered folk but the person is not a man and not living life as a man if s/he is pregnant, that is about the only thing that actually defined the differences between the sexes. Just seems like a desperate plea for attention. If you choose to conceive and carry a fetus you are not a man

  13. apples says:

Oh, come on! Marnisha, people said that having kids as a gay people was strange and unaccepted years ago (still is, how horrible), and interracial before that. Before you know it, it will be accepted to have a transgendered parent.
