Madonna Gets ‘Sticky & Sweet’ In Detroit, MI

The TV Guide
November 19th, 2008

Last night Sarah, Mark, Tracey, Erik and I met up for a quick bite to eat at Union Street in Detroit, MI before we headed over en masse to Ford Field to see Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet World Tour homecoming concert last night. This show was the first time Madonna brought a concert tour to Detroit (to Michigan, even) since her Drowned World Tour so the whole Detroit metro area was very excited to come out and see her. Here are a few pics that I snapped at last night’s show:

Maddy sounded really happy to be home … she gave Detroit 13 shout-outs, made 2 mentions to her “home town”, mentioned the “Motor City” once, uttered the phrases “There’s no place like home” and “You can take the girl out of Detroit but you can’t take the Detroit out of the girl”, proclaimed that “Detroit girls don’t take no shit” and asked the audience to get loud because she “don’t come here very often, so make it big”. When I saw her in LA she didn’t really talk to the crowd very much … last night, she wouldn’t stop talking to the hometown crowd. The show was really fun, we had a blast. I also got to meet a few Detroit (and one Windsor, Canada) Pink readers at the show last night:

I have to give a shout-out to Jeffrey, Zach, Julia (and their friends Allie and Sophie), Michelle (from Windsor) — and an extra pic of Robbie (from Melbourne, Australia), who I met at the LA Madonna show a couple of weeks ago. It was great to meet you all :)

After the jump, check out a video that I shot at last night’s show of Madonna performing the requested song of the night with the entire crowd, a song she recently vowed she’d never perform again — Material Girl

It was really great seeing Madonna in our hometown … we all had a really great time. Tonight is my last full night here in Detroit before I go back to LA tomorrow … I’m spending the afternoon with Tracey and Zakiya and tonight Sarah and I are gonna catch a movie. So much fun here in D-town … I’m gonna miss it.

The concert was amazing! I saw you, actually. when you first arrived you were 2 rows infront of me but I didnt want to disturb. Then my friend Erin said she ran into you and sparked up a short convo about the first time we all met at OSLO for SASS last party on my birthday.

I really like the blonde, suits you well ;).

Anywho, amazing concert, it was my first Madonna concert ever so it was def memorable! Loved it when we all sang Material Girl :)

  8. ET Says:

I was at the concert last night too, and it was awesome! I really liked it more than Drowned World in 2001…

But I’m curious…did anyone hear what the first song someone suggested she sing before settling on “Material Girl”? She said something like, “Oh no, I”m not going to sing that one…”

  9. DKS Says:

I was at the show too! Just a few rows away from the looks of it :) The hometown girl did it up right. M works her ASS off! So much fun. But yeah - what ET says - what song did “Kyle” in the front row request first? She was like, oh hell no I’m not doing that! lol.

  10. K Says:

Ahhhhh jealous that you got Material Girl!!!!!!! One of my most faves ever!

I’m from Vancouver and was at her very first concert ever in Van October 30th….we sang Like A Virgin….so good!

  11. JarEdina Monsoon Says:

Do you know how many times Madge has said no more Holiday, Like a Virgin, Material Girl..PLEASE! She knows she loves those songs (well, maybe not MG) and knows their place in her history. She should be proud of those songs–they are legendary and fantastic.

  12. Julia Says:

Trent darling! It was so great to meet you! I have read and enjoyed PITNB for years and seeing you was such a treat. Thanks for taking the time to say hello and snap a pic! I hope you had a blast at the concert - before it started, I told Zach and my friend Heather that I really wanted to hear Material Girl even though it wasn’t on the setlist, so that totally made my night. Take care, and thanks again for making PITNB so fantastic! :) xoxo

  13. Brenda Says:

Glad you all had such a great time. I must have been at a different concert. I thought Madonna looked gaunt, and didn’t seem to really connect with her dancers. Compared with past tours, this wasn’t a tight show — it seemed like an off night. Maybe she was nervous because she was home?

Another problem was that we had a hard time understanding her, due to the sound system, which was muddy up where we sat. And it wasn’t much fun sitting and waiting two hours on a school night. But maybe it all looked better down close, where you all were.

  14. vbeep Says:

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SUNGLASSES THOSE ARE THAT MADONNA IS WEARING?!?!

  15. Queen Isabella Says:

I was at the concert last night in Detroit and I definately dont think it was worth what I paid. She was almost 2 HOURS LATE, most of the songs longer than 20 sec. blips were ones the crowd didnt know the words to, and not even an encore!! You’d think it was the LEAST she could do since she didnt start until 9:45. People around our group were leaving as early as 40 min. into the show and Madonna knew it was going downhill. Thats the reason why she was talking to the crowd. She used everything in the book to try and pump up the audience but most were already thinking about going back to the car. The concert sucked. I think Detroit agrees.

  16. La Princesa Says:

    SWEET! I love it!

At my concert, the singalong song was “Secret.”

  17. my girl sam Says:

I have loved Madonna since 7th grade and this was my first concert of hers. Too bad we had to wait 2 hours but I personally think that was Ford Field’s fault, way unorganized at the admittance. We LOVED all of the new album songs! She can give it to me anytime :)

  18. Mary Contrary Says:

    She’s singing out of tune–horrible!

  19. DJ Says:

Love, love, love your hair in the these photos Trent!!!

  20. Ab Says:

The song that “Kyle” (Or Harold as she first thought his name was) originally requested was “Like a Virgin”

  21. SAPLE Says:

OH MY GOSH you were there . I did not know you were i would of looked for you. I was sitting right behind Kyle the guy she was talking to that requested the song….

I was on the other side of the stage.. your pictures are better though, all I had was my crappy cell phone camera.. dang it
