Jennifer Aniston Does ‘The New York Times Style Magazine’
Q&A

Jennifer Aniston is featured on the cover and in the pages of the newest issue of The New York Times Magazine wherein she talks about … well, a lot of things. Here is Jen’s coverphoto and a portion of her fairly lengthy interview:

Q: What was the first television show you remember watching?

A: Oh, God — “The New Zoo Revue”? Or maybe “Land of the Lost?” No — it was that guy . . . Captain Kangaroo. He was on the porch with Mr. Green Jeans. Have I just dated myself?

Q: When did you first appear on a screen?

A: My dad became a soap opera actor, and I was an extra in a skating rink scene on the soap. I didn’t audition. It was nepotism all the way.

Q: Did you dream of being in big-screen movies rather than on television?

A: No. Never. As I grew up, there was “Mary Tyler Moore” and “Rhoda.” TV seemed cool.

Q: Did you make a lot of pilots before “Friends”?

A: Oh, yes — I have my sitcom graveyard. Before I even moved to L.A., I was cast in a show called “Malloy.” I played the spoiled little sister of the lead character. “Malloy” lasted six episodes. And then I was cast as Jeanie Bueller, the bratty sister in the TV version of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” That lasted almost a season.

Q: You’re lucky that the show that was successful — “Friends” — was the one that should have been. You could have been Jeanie Bueller forever.

A: That would have been the worst. When you accept a role in a pilot, you automatically sign up for five years. You think it’s scary to walk down the aisle? Try signing a five-year contract for a show you may not want to be part of down the road. That’s why “Friends” was so great. During the first week of shooting, I thought, I’ll be heartbroken if this doesn’t continue. It was the first time I felt like part of the cool kids.

Q: If “Friends” comes on when you’re home, will you watch?

A: I have. There are times I don’t even remember that particular show. This is horrible to say, but there are times when I laugh my rear end off. And I get in debates with people who are over and say, “ ‘Friends’ is not my thing.” Excuse you!

Q: During the huge success of “Friends,” were you anxious to parlay your popularity into movies?

A: I thought I’d never get movies. Then they started to think I could play the girl in the big Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller movies.

Q: And now you’re with Owen Wilson in “Marley & Me.” Did you read the book?

A: I was given the book four times. I just didn’t want to read a book about a dog. When they sent me the script, I thought, I’ll just start it and see, and all of a sudden I was in tears. We worked really hard to make it not just about a dog.

Q: Your other film, which is out in February, “She’s Just Not That Into You,” is based on a line from a “Sex and the City” episode — a move from one screen to another.

A: I wish it was “She’s Just Not That Into You”! Unfortunately, it’s “ He’s Just Not That Into You.” The other would be more empowering.

Q: Another screen that has gained in prominence since “Friends” is the computer screen. Has Internet stardom become oppressive to you?

A: Here’s where I luck out: I’m really computer illiterate. When I see people on their BlackBerrys, working them like some girls work a hair dryer, I’m just stunned. People have sent me clips from FunnyOrDie.com or YouTube, but I never seek it out. I did love that little girl in the Will Ferrell landlord clip on FunnyOrDie, but I’m content with just checking my e-mail.

Q: What about something like Facebook?

A: It’s not for me. I’d be opening myself up too much. I don’t want to sound like a complete innocent — I’ve looked at things, of course. But it’s such spewing. If I look at it, I’ll be affected. It’s like dancing with the devil. But I have spent hours on FirstDibs.com, looking at furniture. And I like to play Scrabble. And poker. I discovered Wii this weekend. I’m a late bloomer.

Q: How much do you hate cameras on phones?

A: My favorite move is when people pretend that they’re on the phone and they kind of dial and take the picture at the same time. You hope they’re doing it for themselves — that they’re not thinking, I’m going to dine out on you.

Q: Do you think “Friends” would be as successful if it went on the air now?

A: Hard to tell — that was a different time. Now TV has too much to do with celebrity. We have reality television, where people try to become celebrities and celebrities dancing and past celebrities trying to be celebrities again. I thank God for shows like “30 Rock.”

Q: Was it nice to be back on the small screen?

A: The whole experience felt like fate. I was flying into New York and I thought, I want to work in New York again. The next day they called and asked if I wanted to do an episode of “30 Rock,” which tapes in New York. And it was so much fun. So I guess, with screens, like everything else, size doesn’t matter.

Hmmm … she does tend to come off very charming in press interviews, doesn’t she? I have such a hard time understanding how people choose to shun technology but I suppose a celebrity, who is constantly being filmed and/or bombarded with everything at such a fast pace, might like the idea of cutting themselves off from any and everything every once-in-a-while. I can, somehow, see Jennifer Aniston playing on the Wii tho. After the jump, checkout two more photos of Jen from this issue of The New York Times Magazine

The photos are cute, the interview is cute and I doubt anyone could dine on a cameraphone photo of Jennifer Aniston … well, depending on what she was doing (and with who), that is ;) It’s interesting that the topic of John Mayer never came up … Hmmm.

jen is adorable and down to earth and lovely. for everyone saying it was lame of her to bring up angie after 4 years, do you realize it was in response to angie bringing it up first?? do you know it was responding to angie coming out and commenting on how it was so great that her kids were going to be able to watch the movie where she and their dad fell in love (mr & mrs smith)?? that IS uncool. brad an jen were still married during the making of that movie. it drives me insane that angelina gets to be the saint all the time – she isn’t a saint at all. you want to talk about PR stunts? how about every flippin’ move that angie makes? everything angie does, even if it is charitable or whatever, it is a stunt to make her look like this uber-woman. when, in fact, if you look back at her past, she has seduced 2 married men, used to wear a vile of blood around her neck, and is just plain evil. i will stop ranting, but everyone needs to leave jen alone. she is just trying to live her life, and she is a helluva a lot more genuine than angelina.

  3. Deena says:

Who cares how Reese Witherspoon handled the end of *her* marriage? Reese Witherspoon is not Jennifer Aniston…and she wasn’t in a marriage to Brad Pitt. She didn’t go through the things that Jennifer Aniston went through – and handling painful experiences is different for everyone. Even if the marriage isn’t a happy one, the dissolution is hard to go through. Adding another person to the equation hurts more, especially when that person speaks about their part of it in a public forum and the whole world gets to hear what they say. Angelina had to have known that Jennifer would hear about it. Really, who didn’t hear about it? You can say Jennifer should have kept her mouth shut, but you could say the same thing about Angelina. She didn’t have to offer up a chronology of how they fell in love before he was divorced. Why is Jen being vilified for giving an opinion on comments that hurt her more than anyone else in the world?

  4. jane says:

she looks super photoshopped on the cover

  5. April says:

These Jennifer bashers on here are unbelievable..so hateful and rude about a really grounded and un-desperate woman. If any of you ladies had to go through that type of public divorce..you would be singing another tune! I don’t see any bad karma around her…the whole “what-goes-around-comes-around” is totally going to affect that retarded Brangelina couple! P.S. It’s funny how you guys think you understand why her and John got back together – those are your speculations but you act like they are truths. Haven’t you heard of people getting together because they LIKE each other? Have none of you ever broken up with someone and found out after you’re separated that you really want to get back together again? WAY too many people posting here acting all high and mighty for NO GOOD REASON.

Interviewers hound her for comments on the Brangelina thing by the way..God forbid she answer once in awhile (and I mean ONCE in awhile!!..she hardly comments on this subject) but that alien Angelina blabbers on and on…..take your blinders off people! Jennifer Aniston does not ask to discuss that topic but interviewers desparately try to get 1 or 2 lines out of her ALL the time..ALLLL the time.

Mikisix- nice lies there about 5 nosejobs…you’re wrapped up in these lies thinking they are truths……pretty sad.

  6. piper, with a low says:

    Angelina gave a detailed timeline?

    Really?

Because I have the Vogue issue in question and I didn’t see a detailed timeline.

Seriously… some women act like Jennifer Aniston is their personal Pied Piper. Too bad that none of you ever retain what she said for more than days or months at a time. If you all did, you would see how often she contradicts herself.

  7. Gigi says:

    OMG..Aniston is sooooo boring.
    and stupid.
    conceited.

  8. ab says:

cute pictures, and I like jennifer’s interviews. she seems like she’d be fun to hang out with. I watched ‘the break-up’ last weekend, she and vince vaughn had great chemistry together.

that said, I’m also a fan of angelina and brad, their charity work is impressive and their little kids are cute.

I love how every post on any website that involves jen, brad or angie really brings out the crazy! I think it’s so weird to have such strong feelings about people you don’t know and will likely never know in real life.

  9. ..... says:

You people do know there are Jen fans that wished DEATH on Angelina when she was pregnant and wished for her to miscarry!!!

Go to female first and see. Some Jen fans are disturbed

  10. ..... says:

Also Jen found a comic about her KILLING Angelina to be the “funniest thing” she ever saw!

And Angelina’s falling in love comment was taken out of context

This is what she actually said…
“They’re going to have a great laugh – to see when their parents actually met, and watch them fall in love and try to kill each other!”

She was talking about the characters.

  11. Suzi says:

Jen is to stupid, her reading comprehension must be that of a 3rd grader. Jen wants her fans to pity her. I use to be a fan of hers until I really started looking into the facts myself. I discovered what Jen was saying was not really right. I think she does want sympathy.

The way she put out the information is totally inacurate. That’s why I’m done with her. It would have been better if she did not say anything in that Vogue interview about Angie.
She could have started out fresh but she chose the low road.

I think Jen cater to low intelligent divorced women who will not go look up the facts for them self. Glad I did now I know how Jen operates. Jen and CAA will fine out it’s not that many lonely dejected women that won’t move on with there life when her movie open. Most women move on and become happy well adjusted women who don’t dwell on their past for years.
I really find Jen to be truly demented.

  15. Sarah says:

Remember when people discussed talent and career accomplishments? Yeaaaaaah.

  16. Maggie says:

i love the cover photo!! =) she’s super hot

  17. Shellie says:

omg… they are celebrities going through what john doe and his missus down the road go through. If they all died your lives would still go on! Stop abusing other people for celebrities you dont know. You don’t know the full story and never will. none of us will. so stop acting like you know everything – thats to the ange camp AND jen camp.

right rant over, i like the pics, i think they are awesome :)

  18. nc says:

    I’ll definitely buy this magazine.

  19. tsagrednerp says:

    I think my post was deleted…Oops… Hmm…

Jen Aniston. Don’t like her. She looks cute on the cover. More emotion than I’ve ever seen from her even in ‘Friends’, least fave of all the characters.

    That is All.
