A History-Making Night To Remember
Yesterday was a pretty amazing day, I think it’s pretty safe to say, but I spent most of it holed up in my apartment glued to the TV screen. I’ve been watching so much political coverage over the past few weeks and then yesterday felt like the calm before the storm. I didn’t want to leave my computer until I was able to happily report the Obama victory so I stayed in for most of the day. But once the election was called for Barack Obama, I made my way out to Steph and Alek’s place to get my celebration on. We toasted the new President and then watched him give his victory speech in Chicago, IL. It was a very special moment. Then, we bundled up and made our way to West Hollywood, CA to join the revelers there … here are a few pics from last night’s fun:

I was wearing the Vote Obama/Express Yourself t-shirt that Madonna has been selling on the US leg of her tour (I ordered it online and it arrived in time for me to be able to wear it on Election Day/Night) but had to bundle up because it was cold and breezy last night in WeHo. We joked that it was the Winds of Change that we were dealing with.
Last night was a night that millions of Americans will remember for the rest of their lives. It’s a night that will be taught about in schools, chronicled in history books and will be told to children not yet born … and I was able to spend it with dear friends. Life is pretty good right about now :)

Being a history major I can’t wait to tell the younger generations about this. It was definitely something monumental last night fo sho!

I live in Australia and I can honestly say that we are all so happy for America! So inspiring – congratulations to you all! I had tears in my eyes listening to Obama’s speech.

I am pregnant with my 3rd child right now. I am so excited that my boys will grow up not even knowing that there was a time when black American were told that they could not do whatever they wanted. They will hear about it in school and be appalled and I will be able to proudly tell them that I was able to vote for our very first non-Caucasian president!

My only regret is that my two-year-old daughter, Megan, won’t remember these historic days… but you betcha (wink) I’ll tell her all about it when she’s older!!! :-)
And yep, I also cried tears of joy, too – I’ve had a Big Dumb Grin ™ on my face all day!

What happened to a post about Proposition 8?

LOL about the Winds of Change! Glad you could celebrate with friends :)

Heather — as I mentioned earlier, the final count on Prop 8 hasn’t been decided yet and I wrote about my feelings on the measure overall here: http://pinkisthenewblog.com/home/2008/11/celebs-voted/

I find it ironic that on a day as historically significant as this one for people of all colors and nationalities, that it is also one marred by intolerance.
It wasn’t so long ago that marriage between a black person and a white person was considered an “abomination”. I think people forget that.
Separate but equal is not equal. Never was. Never will be.

Okay I am not sure which is which, Steph or Alek, but the one in the blue shirt that morphed into the brown jacket is HOT!! Damn, he give Angelina a run for her money:)!!!

CC-
Sadly, I got some flyers from “Yes on 8″ that did in fact bring up inter-racial marriages and argued that those were totally different from same sex marriages. Sent those through my paper shredder…a few times.

Don’t worry CC, if America completely got there yesterday/today, I’m sure they’ll get there with same-sex marriages once they realise how narrow minded they’re being about the fact we’re all human. It might take longer, but progress is progress. I think even though it looks like Prop 8 will pass, it won’t be too long before it’s tossed into the Missy’s shredder :P

Nicola-
You’re right. We are making progress. I mean, eight years ago, when gay marriage was first voted down, the margin between yes and no was something like 20%. Now, even though it’s still getting voted down, the margin’s down to just a few points, so…we are getting there. Granted…not as quickly as we would like, but…we’re making our way.

Trent, that’s hilarious that you said it was the “winds of change” because it was pretty windy down here in Dallas too and I joked that it was cause Obama got into office.

Not just a big day for Americans, but for people all over the world! Growing up in Canada as the white child of an adoptive black man, this is huge! A huge leap towards equality for all!!
