Watching Mark Wahlberg Is ‘Payne’-Ful
Woot! I have some amazingly exciting Buffy news to impart today but first things first. Yesterday afternon, I met up with Darion on the West Side so that we could take a drive down to Redondo Beach, CA to dine at the amazingly delicious Chick-Fil-A. After we had sufficiently supped, we met up with Kirsten to catch a showing of the #1 movie at the box office, Max Payne. Now, it should be noted that it was not my movie pic (mainly because I am always disappointed by movies based on video games) but we decided to trust Darion on this one … turns out … we shouldn’t've:

I cannot even stress how horrrrrible this movie was. I mean … for an action film, you might expect action but that’s not what you get from Max Payne. The movie is just boring. Bottom line. ZZZZZZZZfest. Mark Wahlberg offers one facial expression the entire film and you spend all of your time trying to figure out what the hell is going on. The confusing story is so boring, tho, that you quickly lose interest and end up just hoping for amazing action scenes with cool special effects. Even then … nothing. Sure there are some FX but they were sparse and, IMHO, pointless. Heroes offers more exciting effects than this movie did. Throw in formulaic story-telling (with the classic villainy that allows the hero to escape and save the day) and you get a pretty worthless movie. I bet watching the video game would be more entertaining. Seriously, I can’t even give it a rating of poop sandwich cuz that would be too kind. Trust me, take a pass on this one. I couldn’t find one redeeming quality. It’s just … bad.
BUT .. the night was not a total wash. Last week, Pink reader John gave me the head’s up that Best Buy is offering free DVDs of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Cast Panel Discussion that was hosted by the Paley Center this past March. You may recall that I was very lucky to attend that panel discussion in person. On John’s advice, Darion and I popped in to a local Best Buy and, lo and behold, they did have them (on an endcap next to the BtVS DVD box sets). After the movie, Darion, Kirsten and I watched the entire 90 minute DVD — so awesome!

I know there were lots of fans who were not able to get inside for the panel discussion so I’m sure this DVD will be in high demand. My suggestion is to check your local Best Buy as soon as you can to see if they have the DVDs in your town:

The entire panel discussion is featured on this disc … it’s a must see for any Buffy fan. It turns out that my mug made it onto the DVD as well. In a few shots, you can see my profile in the audience:

I never thought I’d be happy to have such a recognizably big nose ;) In any event, Buffy fans should really seek out this DVD. I’m not sure if this Buffy Cast Panel video will be available in any other format … so get it if you can*.
*It’s worth noting that the DVD is Region 1 encoded so it will not play on DVD players outside of North America.
No plans for today … I’m gonna try and get out and enjoy the sunshine. The weather is still very beautiful here in SoCal so I wanna soak it up as much as I can.

That is TOOOOOO COOL! I have to get one. But I wonder if it’s possible to get it in Canada….

I wish I agreed with you more. Unfortunately, it’s getting to be less and less. And we get it…you love Buffy. It’s canceled. Get over it. And Max Payne was a great movie. One everyone should go see and support. Especially in an economy that sucks..here you are suggesting people not go see it. When it’s actually quite good!

Sorry, in an economy that sucks, people should spend their money better on a more entertaining film. It’s just my opinion, you liked it and that’s great! I would rather recommend a movie like ‘W.’ which I found more enjoyable to watch than the mess that ‘Max Payne’ is. It’s nothing personal :) And, btw, Buffy was not canceled, it ended its run and it is STILL beloved by many :) Buffy will never die!

I agree with you on Max Payne. It really wasn’t a good movie, which was a shame, because it had the potential to be a great movie. The action scenes were all over to quickly, and every character acted really stupid.
And now I’m going to have to head to Best Buy to get my buffy fix :)

it ended it’s run=canceled

I could care less about seeing max payne. I am though stoked about the Buffy DVD. One of my fav shows ever! Oh and ended run does not equal canceled that show could still be going had some of the cast not wanted to move on. Stop trying to make yourself feel cool sam.

Oh man that sucks… why isn’t available on Amazon or something? Does anybody know if there is any way I could get it in Australia… my dvd player is multiregional so I could watch it. I have been desparate to see this since it happened. Is it maybe on youtube or something? Major buffy fan here!

Fun night! Thanks Paley Center.

My friend wants to desperately see Max Payne but I thought the trailers were trying too hard…not a good sign. And even though Marky Mark only has ONE facial expression, I am weirdly turned on by his voice. Its a sad thing to admit but true.
And yeah Buffy! Im excited to see them all together again. Never lose that love for the Buffyverse. You totally gave me the heads up on Season 8 in comic book form and Im grateful.

Went and got the buffy dvd, thanks to your info!! Loved it, so good to see them all together again…now I feel the need to pull out my dvd’s and watch the show all over again from the beginning.

Sam – It ended it’s run = Sarah Michelle Geller decided to not come back after season seven, which she told Joss before the beginning of the season. So, the ending was very much planned and the show was very much NOT cancelled.
Love your Buffy posts, Trent! It’s where I get all of my news! <3

Crap! I was just at Best Buy last night, but only went right to the register to pick up a game. Video games can be pretty fun to watch btw, way better than watching Marky Mark and his one facial expresson (a technique he utilized in the Happening also).
Oh well, my Best Buy probably didn’t have any because they are pretty sucky anyway.

Oooh I am so happy! Gotta go get my DVD today :)
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:20 am
sam — gotta be an ass? don’t even bother posting.

Thanks for the heads up! I ran out this morning and got my copy and watched it! I loved watching them all reunited again! I was so excited to see James Marsters. Poor guy looked so tired after his flight. But still hot as ever! ;) The whole cast looked great, and while I love Nick Brendon, I’m not really sure what was going on with him…
Loved seeing Amber Benson again! Such a fun girl!

Got it and watched it last night – thanks!!
Couple comments – Charisman seemed like she didn’t want to be there, Seth seemed over the top, and was it just me or was there serious tension every time Sarah was mentioned or was talking? She interrupted everyone pretty much every time they talked and I couldn’t help but think her answers were so fake and she was “acting” by saying what she thought she was supposed to say. I LOVE BUFFY and am a serious fan, but I have heard from several sources that Sarah is not the nicest person. Nick actually was speaking at a Buffy convention and the way he was talking about her gave me the impression that not many cared for her that much…as a person anyway.
Anyway, thought I’d share my thoughts. Thanks again, Trent! Best free gift I ever got!!

I met the guy that played the vampire Trick at a gay nightclub in Houston one night. I had to ask him, “So, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is she a bitch?’ He just nodded “yes”. Still love her as Buffy though!!

Haha – I believe it! I have a friend who knows Seth Green and he says the same thing. But I agree, doesn’t matter to me – BUFFY IS STILL AMAZING!!!!

I just wanted to say that for someone who normally HATES video game movies, I REALLY enjoyed Max Payne. It’s not a bag movie, yes it’s not the Action Packed movie some might believe it to be, but it was a good movie. And I don’t understand why everyone seems to think the storyline was so hard to follow… Umm pay attention and you get it. So, if you had any slight idea of wanting to see it, I highly recommend it. Oh and the only thing wrong with Mark Wahlberg in this movie is the fact that he wore turtle necks. Icky. It was a good movie and he did a good job in it. [unlike in the happening, THAT was a one expression movie]
