Mr. & Mrs. Gyllenhaal Are Dunzo!

Sad news for Jake and Maggie
October 17th, 2008

Boo. It turns out that the dissolution of marriage doesn’t merely plague the high-powered, rich and famous … it also effects the parents of the high-powered, rich and famous. Naomi Foner has filed paperwork to end her 30+ year marriage to Stephen Gyllenhaal in California court this past Wednesday … the parents of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal are dunzo, y’all:

Naomi Foner – the mother of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal – has filed for divorce from their father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, Los Angeles court papers show. Married for 30 years, Foner – a Golden-Globe winning screenwriter with credits including Running on Empty and Losing Isaiah – cites irreconcilable differences. She says the couple has been separated since Jan. 1. Foner isn’t seeking spousal support, and she also asks the court to deny Gyllenhaal – a film director – any support.

This is really sad news, I think. I mean … it’s always sad when a couple breaks up but when someone’s parents split up it feels even sadder (btw, I never noticed how much Jake looks like his father and Maggie looks like her mother). While divorce like this really hurts younger children, like say Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s children, I’m sure it can still be very upsetting for older children, too. Because of my affinity for Jakey poo, I guess I just find news of this divorce especially sad. At least it sounds like the Gyllenhaals are being fair in these proceedings. The fact that neither one is seeking support from the other makes it sound like the split is amicable. Even still … it’s a bummer.

My parents have been married 36 years, never fought in front of me and my brothers and, if they divorced, it would kill me, a 32 year-old. I don’t think it matters what age you are, it would suck to see your parents divorce. Well, unless your parents fought all the time, violence, or what have you.

Last 2 years were tough for Jake.

Flops, postponed movies, parent’s split, bearding …

Wow…..Is divorce the new trend in Hollywood or just in general?

No offense, but the idea that divorce “really hurts younger children” and is merely “upsetting” for older children is a common misperception which is most often untrue.

When you think about it… Who has more memories of their parents being together, older or younger children?

Can you imagine a divorcing parent telling their 5-year-old child “Daddy was into weird sexual stuff”? No, of course not. You would NEVER tell something like that to a young child. HOWEVER, because “older children” are viewed as “grown-up”, they get told this kind of inappropriate self-disclosre all the time.

Ask someone somtime, who has had their parents divorce after 25-30 years, if, had they known a divorce was imminent, they would have preferred their parents had ended it when they were young… and I bet they’ll say “If it had to happen, I wish it had happened when I was young.”

I dated a guy who’s parents divorced when he was 21. His dad stormed out of the house one day to the tune of “I’m glad I’ll never have to see you again”. Believe me, it was rough on him and it was rough on our relationship – it contributed to us breaking up.

  7. Joanne Says:

Yeah – it’s bad whatever age you are – and even worse if it involves one of the parents having an affair. I think an affair may even feel like a bigger violation if you are older when you find out, because you fully understand what has happened.

  8. Katy Says:

I don’t get why people divorce after that long… do they really want to be single again at that age? Just make it work people.

    I love Jakey poo too,
He’s had an awful year. Heath died in January, then his grandmother died, then his “celebrity godfather” Paul Newman died, and now his parents divorce.
    God Bless you Jake.
