First Look: Beyoncé, ‘Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)’

Last Saturday we got our first look at Beyoncé’s new music video for If I Were A Boy and today we get our first look at her other new music video for Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). Each video has a very distinctly different message but they deffo show that Beyoncé is more than just a crooner or a dancer … she’s also a schizophrenic:
MTVBeyoncé has two new songs on the radio — and two new videos as well. Why two, you might ask? Because one of them is not really Beyoncé: It’s Sasha. As B hinted in a letter to fans earlier this month, she wants to show “the many sides” of herself, and she’s doing that via two completely different videos, even if they are both in black and white. One video is pure Sasha — her onstage persona — and the other is stripped-down Beyoncé. “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” is an upbeat dance track, and as such, the video is about dancing. B is joined by two look-alike dancers, befitting her alter-ego theme. They click their heels, almost as if they’re tap dancing, to give the song some extra beats, but despite all the hip-and-leg shaking going on, they want you to look at their hands. More specifically, their ring fingers. And since Beyoncé didn’t even want an engagement ring, according to what she told Essence magazine, this is your first clue that this song is really from Sasha’s heart, not Beyoncé’s. The video for “If I Were a Boy,” the Beyoncé side of the two, however, is the more meaningful one — and it comes with a twist that requires repeat viewing. Beyoncé and her boyfriend say a few words (“intimacy,” “honesty,” “commitment”), and then they start saying the words together: “You.” “Me.” “Us.” … The message might hearken back to what Ciara sang when she and B were going through a tomboy phase in their video clips, but this time, Beyoncé makes you feel it. Without the video, you might not.

I dunno. Single Ladies is hot. Sasha or whoever the hell Beyoncé thinks she is, girl is tearin’ it up! If I Were A Boy is more artisitc, I think. I don’t know which one I like more … do you?

I love Beyonce and her dancing is HOT! With that said.. This song sucks.. it’s like the poor man’s ‘Get Me Bodied’ and it does not sound radio friendly.

Somehow Beyonce has managed to become a superstar WITHOUT divulging too much of her personal life…A while it’s a little annoying (I tend to like my pop stars a little more human)…It’s also very refreshing. It makes me want to watch her more, cuz I feel like the more I watch, the more I’ll figure her out.
I like “If I were a boy”, because it’s the first time I’ve seen beyonce play a character that isn’t so one dimensional. And the song is kinda nice.
The hottest thing about the Single Ladies video is Beyonce’s confidence. It’s so damn fascinating to watch!!!
I hate that Im becoming a fan of hers…but it’s happening.
Damn you, Beyonce!!

Wow…The song is OK. The dancing was good. But I really didn’t like the video much at all. But that’s just my personal opinion.

if i were a boys, is with a doubt the better video of the two. single ladies….is honestly a really crappy video theres nothing too it. the dancing is alright, ive seen her do better. i find like a boy to be the better song too…. single ladies sounds like something that didnt make the cut of her last cd..

While I do enjoy the video, it kind of qualifies for as as “beyotch stole my look” moment. It clearly rips off Gwen Verdon’s “Mexican Breakfast” by Fosse (you can youtube the clip) dance. While Beyonce is a good performer, I think it’s a shame that she has to rehash or take ideas from others i.e. Kylie Minogue with Get me bodied or Janet Jackson with her Ring the Alarm performance. If she wants to be a legend, she’s going to have to start coming up with her own ideas…

At first, I thought all three were Beyonce! but then I figured it wasn’t but they all sort of look alike…
the song is okay, very repetitive… not sure If I like it though I don’t really care for her as an artist anyways.

Awesome dance routine, not totally perfect but in a good way and very real (totally amazed at how she pulled that one off, its a long routine!!) so it works even better for me.
I really like the song, already found it somewhere and its on my ipod, great “wake up” song :D

I dont think its a rip off of Mexican Breakfast. It was definitely inspired by the choreography, but I think it was more of an homage than anything else. Her dancing always looks painful to me. that kind of movement is really hard on the back, as a dancer Id need a lot of warming up to do that choreography lol

I love this video sooooo much, its so simple and the dance moves are amazing!! I like how its one scene and the camera pans around them. Was this taken in one shot? The video definitely made the song 100x better! GO beyonce!! BTW im not a beyonce fan, actually anti beyonce. GO BRITNEY!!!

Erm, Beyonce rips from Kylie again!! The glove is a knock off the same type of cyborg glove Kylie is sporting in her latest tour. Kylie has been wearing the gloves since May 08 and were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. See for yourself here:

Forgive me for this: Schizophrenia is not the same as multiple personality disorder. It’s so often casually used that way, but not the same. Do with that what you will. (My very sweet uncle has Schizophrenia, so I’m sensitive to it.)

I think they used Bob Fosse choreography (Gwen Verdon) as an influence… Makes sense with the emphasis on the hands (Fosse’s signature). HOT VIDEO!

This isn’t my favorite Beyonce song nor is it a masterpiece but I love how her passion shows through with everything she puts out. She’s smart and definitely takes what she does seriously and is not lazy about it. It reminds me a lot of how Madonna approaches her career. It’s not a bad thing to be influenced by other artists like Fosse…so much of what we see is an interpretation of something else. But I think there’s a difference between imitation and inspiration. This is not imitation.

OMG that first video – Single Ladies – imho – total crap! Visually, watching them dance around is fun but the song just did nothing for me. The second video though – If I were a boy – is awesome. The ‘twist’ toward the end really took me surprise and almost drew tears…she sings of pain and sounds like she means it. Fabulous.
