‘Don’t Vote’
A whole slew of celebs have gotten together to appear in a PSA produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, will.i.am, Tobey Maguire and Forest Whitaker in an effort to encourage the American youth to register to vote by telling them not to vote. The vid is a lengthy 4 minutes long but is deffo worth watching in full:
An effective strategy? Or, a plea destined to fall on deaf ears? You decide.

It’s cool that they care enough to spend the time making this video, and bits of it were hilarious (mainly Ellen) but… patronising much? But maybe that’s just me that thinks that.
October 4th, 2008 at 9:54 am
and courtney cox saying she used to have 5 friends… hehe!
October 4th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Yea, the Courtney Cox line is the best. That and Sarah Silverman. I love the whole thing. I wish it was constantly playing in the public’s ears.

I think this great. I love how so many celebrities have gotten together for this important public announcement. It is very important to vote especially in this particular election where our future matters more than it ever has before. VOTE on November 4th!

I. LOVE. SARAH SILVERMAN.
October 4th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Preach! I totally agree, this PSA is great :)
October 4th, 2008 at 10:11 am
lol, this is so adorable. Way better than that jessica alba creeptastic video from yesterday.
October 4th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I love it when this works, and then the people who get inspired to vote, vote Republican. In your face, liberal Hollywood!
October 4th, 2008 at 10:32 am
i am not american. if we had celebs in france caring that much about people voting, the turnout will be better… :)
this campaign is good. ellen is good in it.
much better and more educative than alba’s ad.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS
October 4th, 2008 at 10:54 am
i think its a really good video,(all the way from the uk) however i think they should have shorter versions of them just going “don’t vote” as a teaser to then see the full clip (sort of like subliminal messaging between ads) would probably appeal to a greater mass of people aswell. :-)
October 4th, 2008 at 10:58 am
that was good, it should have been blasted all over the place considering it’s way too close to the deadline to register.
I love the “who cares about the economy? I have a ton of money, don’t give a shit” and “the war on drugs? I’ve never fought a war about drugs.I’ve never done shit on drugs besides play Halo 2″ that alone made me want to go vote RIGHT NOW!
where did this come from? because this should be on the front page of youtube when you go to it.
October 4th, 2008 at 11:02 am
i love sarah silverman. she’s why i sent it to my peeps! it’s going to spread…like herpes…but the good kind!
October 4th, 2008 at 11:03 am
20 bazillion time better than that creepy Jessica Alba stuff…
October 4th, 2008 at 11:11 am
HAHAHAHA! Man, this was great! I laughed through a bit of it and I plan on showing my husband who is 30 and has never voted for anything in his life! I’m passing it along on all the social sites I’m a part of! *grin*
October 4th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Ahhhhh, I love it! Please register, please vote….if not for yourself then do it for my sons! :)
October 4th, 2008 at 11:32 am
it’s too bad i’m from vancouver canada….i would TOTALLY VOTE! hahaha. so please, fellow american cousins, please do your part and vote….but register first LOL.
awesome vid clip…good job ….
October 4th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
THIS is the way to go. The Jessica Alba clip yesterday was catering to a really young audience. I don’t see how it would work for people old enough to vote. This was totally appropriate!
And Sally – we in Canada have a vote as well and you can vote today in the pre-election.
October 4th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
how about a plea falling on deaf ears? the majority of those actors are washed up anyway.
and i agree with julie, defy the liberal hollywood!
October 4th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
i thought this was very funny and EFFECTIVE on me.. i really heard their message for once and see how important it is that we ALL vote if we are 18 yrs of age. I sent this video to my friends and I hope they vote.
October 4th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I just went around my neighborhood and passed out registration sheets and addressed and stamped envelopes. This ad and all your discussion on registering people to vote really effected me and hopefully the a couple more people will vote now. Obama-Biden 2008!
October 4th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
I agree with the person who said that this is all a bit patronizing. As a twenty-year old, I feel that these celebrities are insulting my intelligence. I am sick of them trying to force their opinions on the American youth. We are bright enough to make our own decisions. We don’t need these millionaires telling us what to do, because unlike them we have to work hard just to live day to day, paycheck to paycheck. I think that this has all become way too excessive and that is has started to hurt their candidate.
October 4th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
I already registered a long time ago and it had nothing to do with celebrities telling me “vote” or “don’t vote.”
October 4th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Marjorie, I’m afraid I have to disagree … while YOU fell you are bright enough to realize the importance of voting there are MILLIONS of others who do not understand the importance. I fully support any campaign to get young people to vote.
October 4th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
it’s not Isla fisher… it’s AMY ADAMS!!
October 4th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
I wish we had some cool campaign like this in NZ. We had a little orange man popping up everywhere to tell us to vote.. it was annoying and not persuasive at all (I still registered but I did it coz my Dad is really passionate about registering)
I think something like this might work better..
October 4th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I’m glad to see this positive reaction! Sarah Silverman was totally the best. I have to admit that it did come off as a little patronizing to me, but I’ve been into politics since I was a kid so I’m not the target audience, and I love the idea behind it. I just had to respond to the idea that this could “backfire” or something on “liberal hollywood.” The think about being liberal is that it means having tolerance for and placing value on including many different points of view in a society/education/what-have-you. If people are voting, there is no backfiring. The liberal point of view is that we want to hear from EVERYBODY, even those we disagree with. It’s amazing that Republicans have demonized this word and idea.
October 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
(oops. typo. i meant “the thing about being liberal”)
October 4th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Wow – I loved the Jessica Alba creeptastic video – but this one rocks!!! will.i.am makes the best campaign videos! Jonah Hill was hilarious, as was the Courtney Cox Friends line, and Sarah Silverman taking off her bra was random and hilarious!!! I hope this spreads like herpes – but good!!! LOL!!!
October 4th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
I am Canadian, which is sad in the sense that I have probably watched more debates and “super tuesdays” than most americans… so I am begging you, on behalf of lets say, the WORLD… PLEASE VOTE.. please please vote.. just vote.. its not hard at all… I am 18 and Im registered to vote in my upcoming national election.. so just do it VOTE VOTE VOTE… and if youre going to take my advice on voting… im just going to throw it out there… vote for Obama… just do it.. you dont want sarah palin running things. So two things.
1. Vote.
2. Obama
ps. LOVE THE VIDEO go celebrities go! oh and LOVE YOU TRENT :)
October 4th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
I LOVE THIS!!!! This is great I’m going to post it on myspace, to help spread the word =D And you guys should too, or email it or something! anything!
October 4th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Oh, an 18 year old Canadian has told me to vote for Obama, on a gossip blog….
I’ll get right on that! Thanks for the advice! You’ve completely changed my mind!
October 4th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
well youre welcome :) someone had to after the laster eight years of having the wool pulled over your eyes.. im glad to help :)
October 4th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
FK: Amen about the usage of the word “liberal.”
I think this PSA would work better if it were shorter. After awhile it gets kind of lame. And I usually adore Sarah Silverman, but here it’s just kind of lame.
Marjorie: Who is “their” candidate? No party or candidate is being endorsed here. It’s just about voting ,which I think is something everyone can get behind.
October 4th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
[...] The video stars a group of celebrities that began the show with a sarcastic “don’t vote” [...]
October 5th, 2008 at 10:30 am
I think it’s great. Very effective.
October 5th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
i totally agree… i like it, its smart and witty and i think totally works for its target audience :) i voted… in canada tho :P
October 6th, 2008 at 10:28 am
i loved it! esp. sarah silverman, although for some reason leo di caprio came off a little patronising..
anyway, in australia we have mandatory voting so its interesting seeing these ads popping up all over the place encouraging people to vote.
