Aussies Are Not Taken With The US ‘Kath & Kim’
The show got pulled from the air after 2 eps

Australian audiences are, apparently, not really lovin’ the new US version of their beloved comedic series Kath & Kim. Channel 7, the Aussie network that picked up the US version of the series down under, has decided to pull the series off the air after only two episodes … and replace it with reruns of the original OZ version of the series in its place. Ouch! Nonetheless, filming continues on new eps here in SoCal on the LA set of the show … here are a couple pics of Molly Shannon and Selma Blair shooting new scenes for Kath & Kim yesterday afternoon:

The American version of hit Aussie TV comedy Kath + Kim has failed to impress Antipodean viewers – it has been dropped from schedules after just two episodes. Actress Selma Blairand U.S. funnywoman Molly Shannon play the role of the dysfunctional mother and daughter duo in the American adaptation of the award-winning series. But Australia’s Channel 7 has pulled the show from its primetime slot after the second episode viewing figures plummeted to 729,000 after a promising 1.23 million debut. The network has put the show into “resting” – meaning it will be held until the Australian summer (Nov-Jan08), when Aussie TV returns to its non-ratings period. And as a further blow, the original Kath + Kim will replace its American counterpart. A spokesperson for Channel 7 says, “The figures didn’t stand up for its second outing. For people who want to see more of the U.S. episodes they will return later this year.”

Oh snap! That is not good. In all honesty, tho, it makes sense that Aussie audiences might be turned off by a remake of a series that is still so highly regarded. I believe the third season of the original Kath & Kim just aired last year. For them, a new remake might not make sense so soon. Unfortch for NBC, US audiences aren’t really taking to the show either. After scoring pretty good ratings in its debut week, Kath & Kim suffered a 20% loss of viewership by week two:

The American sitcom based on Australia’s foxy duo from Fountain Lakes last night suffered a 20 per cent slide in its ratings in the US from last week’s better-than expected debut on TV network NBC. Millions of Americans opted to switch channels rather than stomach Kath and Kim’s second episode, with reality show Survivor on CBS and Ugly Betty on ABC easily winning the time slot. Only six million Americans tuned in to Kath & Kim’s second episode, compared to 7.5 million in its premiere week. US magazine, Entertainment Weekly, described it as a “rough evening” for NBC. “Kim was down from its solid premiere the previous week,” entertainment industry bible, Variety, reported. NBC is airing Kath and Kim, starring US actresses Molly Shannon and Selma Blair, as part of its Thursday night comedy block of sitcoms and the network suffered declines across the board … American critics largely savaged the NBC show, with the New York Post describing it as the “worst idea for an import from the land Down Under since Vegemite”.

NBC isn’t doing very well overall so mebbe the straits aren’t quite so dire for Kath & Kim here in the US just yet. I’ve been watching the show and while I think it’s cute, I wouldn’t necessarily call it funny. Well, mebbe that’s not entirely true … I do find myself laughing out loud at times but I am still comparing it the riotously funnier original. The show is still very new and mebbe once it hit it’s stride it’ll do better. NBC just picked up their remake of Knight Rider for a full season of eps. I stopped watching that mess after the second episode (IMHO, it’s really bad, y’all) … so if they can take a chance on that show then they should deffo take a chance on Kath & Kim. Have any of y’all been watching the show? What do you think … keep it or cancel it?

It isn’t the funniest show ever but some dumb humor! I don’t watch it thou! I only saw it once.

  2. Froggie2004 says:

I have not seen the original series, but I bet it is funnier than the US version…

  3. Megan B. says:

I’m enjoying the show, but I have never seen the original, so I can’t compare it to that. I’m sure the original is better, but I hope they don’t cancel this one.

  4. Brooke says:

Cancel it! I don’t think it is good at all.

I know she can in a little later but come on.

I’ve watched the show and I just end up wanting to strangle Kim. I know she’s supposed to be that character but geez, I at least, have some sympathy, or likeability, towards other characters on other shows that are also meant to be annoying. The show is just trying to hard to be different and funny and it’s falling short of that by a lot. I hope it gets better because I adore Molly Shannon. “I-I-I-Ikea!!”

  7. I think it is hilarious, unfortunately, I don’t think it will make it long in US.

  8. wendell says:

I actaully think the US Kath & Kim is pretty funny. I enjoy the type of humor they are attempting and it’s so great to see Molly Shannon back on television in a major part.

  9. Melinda says:

yea……i am not loving it. sorry to say…..i really hoped i would……love Molly Shannon…..love Selma Blair……not so much Kath and Kim……ugh……

  10. julie says:

I’m sure it’s very different from the original, but I do enjoy the US version. It’s entertaining, and I actually like the Kim character. Margie, I do think she has some genuine moments, even though she’s normally selfish and immature. But yeah, I’m sure the Aussies prefer their version. I also like the American Office better than BBC, so go figure.

  11. debho says:

I’m an Aussie and could only watch half of the first show of the US version. Sorry. Compared with ours, it just isn’t funny. I guess if I hadn’t seen the original I might, but then again I can’t stand Molly Shannon either. And Selma makes a terrible Kimmie.

  12. Margie says:

I’m trying, Julie. I’ll continue to give it a shot much like I did with The Office and other shows that faltered when they premiered. I’m hoping that I don’t want to strangle Kim everytime she’s onscreen.

  13. BLo says:

Knight Rider is so bad, it’s good! I love cheesy stuff and this show is FULL of it! Watch it and laugh, y’all!

  14. sej says:

i think this show is absolutely hilarious. i really hope they don’t cancel it. :(

  15. Jon says:

I had high hopes for the remake after seeing the trailers – I thought they were cute and it did actually get a few chuckles from me. The actual show is a whole ‘nother case! I just find it lame and I would even go so far as to say cringe worthy. The dialog is just unfunny and I don’t think Selma Blair fits her role in the slightest… Only 2 eps in and I will stick it out, but so far, not really impressed.

Well, it’s women trying to be funny and comedy is such a boy’s world. Say all you like about Tina Fey and Sarah Sliverman right now, they have paved the way into a more equal comic world, yes, but the mass population is still less then eager to see women as funny. When women try to be funny they are regarded as annoying or obnoxious. I support female comedians, I love Tina Fey and the Oz version of Kath and Kim, but it seems to have missed that mark with US audiences. Maybe because they are funny women?? Selma Blair can take the piss with the best of them, but isn’t Kim supposed to be fat? It’s part of the show, one of the reasons it’s so funny and her weight fuels more mother daughter tension. It’s also good to see a woman comfortable with her size enough to make a joke of it. There are no bigger girls in Hollywood, so I’m not surprised they had to settle for a size zero, but her thong just isn’t as funny as it could be sticking out of her child sized jean skirt.

Definitely the dumbest show I have seen in recent history. The Australian version was clever and hilarious, unfortunately this doesn’t hold a candle. Have to say though, it gives me nasty pleasure to watch Molly and Selma in high def on my new VIZIO and see all the lines and imperfections, but then again I’m an awful person!

  18. sharee says:

    cancel it!

  19. Natalie says:

I am from Australia and the Australian version is soooo much better than the US version. The funny, suburban moments seem to be lost in the US version. Plus – tthe US version is missing one of the best characters – Sharon, Kims second best friend.

The Oz version is shot more like a documentary, whereas the US version seems to be more like a sitcom which is def NOT kath and kim style.

The foxy morons from fountain lake are much funnier than their US cousins. My only hoe is that Australian audiences dont get turned off on eof the best comedies ever to be produced in australia because of the damage the US version did over here.

I thought the trailors were cute.
    But IDK bout the show.
