Alanis Morissette Releases A Video For ‘Not As We’
Poignant break-up song becomes a beautiful music video

Alanis Morissette has released a new video from her latest album Flavors of Entanglement … Not As We is pretty plainly obvs a break-up song, most likely about her split from former fianceé Ryan Reynolds (who just married Scarlett Johansson last weekend in a secret ceremony in Canada). The song is beautifully sad and poignant … and now has a video to match:
Of the tracks on Flavors, I found this song and Torch were the only tracks that seemed to address specifically Alanis’s break-up with Ryan. Torch is the more heartbreaking, Not As We is the more beautiful. I think the video goes well with the song … surely, it was filmed well in advance of Ryan and Scarlett’s nuptials but the fact that its release comes after they tied the knot adds an extra bit of poignancy to the track … it prolly also twists the knife a little as well. It’s a great vid, I think … I totally <3 Alanis.

I couldn’t agree with you more! These songs are very touchingly about Ryan and they’re so…vulnerable, so real. Alanis has a way of putting words to feelings that we’ve all felt. She plain ol’ rocks! Part of me wishes that Ryan would see this video and feel a twist in his stomach, but truth is, he’s got Scarlett and he’s probably happy as a pig in poop.

I can’t listen to this song or Torch without bursting into tears…and I haven’t been broken up with in 15 years! She just seems so blindsided by the whole thing and devastated. Sob.

She’s a musical genius. I’m glad she didn’t put this out last year (I would’ve been a total wreck!)

I just saw Alanis in concert a few weeks ago and when she did “Not As We” the crowd went crazy! She looked really great and she seemed really happy (we were a good audience). I think she’s finally past that break-up phase with Ryan, but the video is amazing. It’s very haunting, I love it!!

I love the video!
And the song too, though I think it’s another version than the one on CD.
I saw Alanis in August, and she only played two songs off her new album, this wasn’t included, I was kinda sad.
But I got to see her, which is enough for me!

Alanis has been a part of my life for a long time. I know it’s crazy but I’ve been a fan since I was about 9 or 10? I bought her CD b/c I liked the song Ironic and have been listening to all of her music since. I remember my cousin who was in high school when Jagged Little Pill came out asking me, “Do you know what some of her songs are about?” and me being a 9 year old smart ass and saying “yeah.” I had no idea, I just knew I loved the music and my understanding and love of the lyrics came later in life. Yeah, I caught that too. I definitely would’ve been a mess if I had heard this song five years ago. I don’t think I would’ve been able to find the beauty in it back then. Time really does heal…

I haven’t had a chance to listen to this album yet and I can’t bring up the video. But reading the lyrics alone and hearing the little samples that I can on my work computer brings a lump to my throat. I love how she throws her soul into what she writes and you can feel the heartbreak as though she were sitting next to you, sobbing onto your shoulder and holding your hand. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful. I love love love her. She’s amazing. I can’t wait to check out this new album in fool! And, better yet, for her to fall in love yet again!!!

Awesome video, awesome song, awesome album. So glad she teamed up with Guy Sigsworth. Giggling Again For No Reason is also unbelievably gorgeous and happy. Put it on Repeat!

I don’t know how Alanis does it – it takes major balls to put emotions and experiences like these out for the entire world to see. Who wants to announce that they’ve been broken up with and that they are devastated about it??? Impressive.
I’ve heard excerpts from the album and I really wanted to like it tons, but it didn’t strike me as something I’d love. I’ll have to listen again. I’ve got every other Alanis album, it seems a shame to stop buying them now :)
And yes, I noticed the strong resemblance to the wedding dress at the end. Yikes!

Amy, I concur! The way she puts it all out there in such a beautiful and poignant way but yet you know there is true emotions behind it. Wow, just blows me way. I totally heart her
And it’s bad enough when we go through our own personal painful break-ups. You lose touch with that person and you may never really know what happens with them (i.e., marriage & kids) but celebrities, man they have to see full color magazine headlines announcing it…OUCH! And know it’s Scarlett Johansson…double OUCH!

It looked to me like the train at the end was the actual bedsheet sort of wrapped around her and trailing along behind her when she got up.
Man – I’ve been married for 9 years this month and haven’t been broken up with in a long time, but I just had to cry a little after seeing that video – it was beautiful!!

It’s so sad and it makes me angry…I hate that anyone has to feel that way because of the actions of someone else. I know how that feels and I just wants to save her from that…I hate how she feels destroyed and he gets married. It just doesn’t seem right. I’m praying for a little karma.
