James T. Kirk & Spock Do ‘Entertainment Weekly’

New photos from the upcoming 'Star Trek' prequel
Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock are featured on the cover and in the pages of this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine. The magazine takes an inside look at the new JJ Abrams-directed Star Trek prequel and offers some new insight from the set as well as a whole slew of new photos from the film. Here is the coverphoto for this week’s issue of EW mag as well as a portion of the coverstory:

Aboard a monstrous and gloomy interstellar cruiser — part Death Star, part Mordor — the man who would be the next captain of the starship Enterprise finds himself under fire from bald, blue-tatted alien brawlers. At the moment, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), the hotheaded, horndog hero of Star Trek, is still a fresh-faced space cadet. At his side is his young half-human, half-Vulcan BFF, Spock (Zachary Quinto), looking quintessentially Spocky with his black bowl cut, slanting eyebrows, and blue smock. Here on the set of director J.J. Abrams’ $150 million bid to bring Gene Roddenberry’s beloved sci-fi world back to the big screen, the two geek pop icons have infiltrated a Romulan warcraft only to see their mission explode into a raging phaser fight. No longer are their signature Trek weapons boxy plastic toys, but sleek silver gizmos with spring-triggered barrels that revolve and glow in the transition from ‘’stun” to ”kill.” Problem is, every time Kirk raises his newfangled ray gun, the barrel revolves too early. Or too late. Or not at all. Giggles and unprintable curses fly. Someone lightens the mood with a quip: ”Most illogical, captain.” For cast and crew, it’s a fleeting and fixable frustration. But a busted phaser is the least of the challenges Abrams faces as he attempts to reenergize a franchise that has clearly lost its zap … After a succession of contrived TV spin-offs (the last, UPN’s Star Trek: Enterprise, mustered only a feeble 2 million viewers in its final season) and mediocre features based on the best of the bunch (Star Trek: The Next Generation), even people who’d built their entire careers around Trek could see the writing on the wall. ”Star Trek,” says Leonard Nimoy, ”had run its course” … Transforming a defunct old property into a cool 21st-century event flick may seem like business as usual for Hollywood (e.g., Superman Returns, Batman Begins), but Trek presented Paramount and Abrams with a much heftier challenge: how to make this hunk of retro sci-fi cheese meaningful as mainstream entertainment, as relevant pop, as big business. ”Every studio in town is searching for these kinds of franchises, so it was important for us to reboot,” says Brad Weston, Paramount’s president of production. ”But we needed a clean, fresh take on this thing.”

The very well-written coverstory (which you can read in its entirety HERE) goes on to talk about Abrams’s vision for the future of Trek (hinting that he may want to make it more Star Wars-y rather than traditionally Trek-y) and offers a pretty substantial movie plot spoiler that may want to be skipped by fans (like me) who wish to remain unspoiled. So … let’s look at some of the new Trek photos. After the jump, check out some new pics of the “old” crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as well as our first look at Romulan bad guy Nero played by Eric Bana

David Beckham’s Latest Fish Schtick

Becks takes his product endorsement in a different direction
Thursday, October 16th, 2008

David Beckham, who has endorsed products as varied as Emporio Armani Underwear and Sharpie markers, has added a new product line to his endorsement empire — fish sticks. You may recall that a report came out in July that claimed that Becks’s paid use of GO3 fish oil vitamins was causing a bit of a stink in his romantic life with wife Vicki B. It would seem that Becks’s affiliation with the GO3 company has moved on to a new phase … they are the creators of this new “health food” product line that Becks was on hand to launch at Wembley Stadium in London this week:

Another day, another product launch for David Beckham. Fresh from helping England to victory in Belarus, the soccer star was performing at Wembley Stadium, where he launched a new healthy food range. Clutching a plate full of fish fingers, the LA Galaxy player waxed lyrical about the importance of healthy eating as he launched the GO3 range. The sports ace was joined by 250 children, who had been let out of school for a few hours, for the high-profile launch at the north west London stadium. Beckham has lent his face and signature to the brand, which has been made by Findus – who have a partnership deal with the English FA – and includes pasta, wraps and omelettes. Beckham has been blamed in the past for the rise in child obesity in the UK after appearing in ads for brands like Pepsi and Walkers crisps. He said: “As a Dad I know how hard it is to get kids to eat the right things. I also know as a footballer, how important it is to eat the right things to perform well, so I think the GO3 range is a great way to help families take some small steps to be fit and healthy at affordable prices.”

Er … I know that I’ve said previously that David Beckham could sell me anything … but I think that even *I* would have to draw the line at fish sticks. I was never really on board with those fish oil vitamins and this kinda just seals the deal for me. While I can appreciate that the fine folks at GO3 have prolly dumped a whole lotta cash in Becks’s lap to endorse their products, I think I would have to take a total pass on any of these fishy products. Get the man back in a pair of those skimpy Armani undies and then put a fish stick in his hand and then mebbe we can talk. Until then … no thanks.

Beyoncé To Release A Double Album

'I Am ...' will be released as a ballads/dance double disc combo
Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Beyoncé made an appearance on MTV’s TRL this week to give further information on her new album, I Am …, which is set for a November release. Beyoncé clarified that her new album would be a 17-song double disc — the disc comprised of ballads will be called I Am … Beyoncé and the other disc comprised of dance tracks will be called I Am … Sasha — which would explain why B released two music videos simultaneously … one for a Beyoncé ballad track and the other for a Sasha dance track:

Beyonce fans will see a new side of the R&B star with the release of her new studio album on November 18. The singer’s latest will be a double-disc set, according to Entertainment Weekly. But fans could be getting more than just Beyonce on the 17-track release. While the ballad-oriented first disc will be reportedly titled “I Am… Beyonce,” the dancefloor-ready second disc is reportedly rumored to be titled “I Am… Sasha,” after the singer’s on-stage alter ego. And a new Web site, WhoIsSashaFierce.com, is asking fans to call in if they think they know Sasha’s identity for the chance to win a $500 grand prize and a personal message from Sasha – whoever she may be. Beyonce isn’t the first to face off against herself on an album – T.I. tried a similar tactic on 2007’s “T.I. Vs. T.I.P.” Her new CD, the follow-up to 2006’s “B’Day,” will also be offered as a single-disc version priced $4 or $5 less than the double disc, according to Entertainment Weekly. The star recorded over 70 tracks for the album, telling fans on her MySpace page, “I have taken the time so I can create my sound. I have poured my heart and soul into it. It is my baby.” She will also reportedly be releasing a video disc in February with clips for every song along with a Spanish-language version of the album – not to mention a 110-date world tour that’s set to launch in April.

Brills! Beyoncé really knows how to capitalize and I know I, for one, am looking forward to this new bunch of songs. While I have a very hard time believing Beyoncé’s claim that she really recorded “60 to 70″ songs for her new album, I am starting to believe that she prolly did record a large number of tracks … resulting in this double disc idea. Offering a cheaper single-disc option is also quite brilliant. After the jump, check out the tracklisting for the double-disc album I Am … and see a few photos from Beyoncé’s appearance on TRL earlier this week …

Lindsay Lohan & Samantha Ronson ‘Are Fine’

Lohan rep denies L. Ron break-up reports
Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Despite a new report to the contrary, Lindsay Lohan’s publicist is refuting claims that the relationship between Lindsay and Samantha Ronson has hit a rough patch. Responding to a claim made by the UK publication Mail on Sunday that circulated a report that L. Ron are on the verge of breaking up, Lohan’s spokesperson reveals “they are fine” … which I find very interesting considering the same spokesperson denied that Lindsay confirmed the girls’ relationship even existed in the first place a few weeks ago. Here is a pic of Lindsay and Sam posing happily together at the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center for Saks Fifth Avenue’s Key To The Cure launch party on Tuesday night:

Are Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson together — or aren’t they? It depends who you ask – and when. On the heels of false reports that the two were planning to wed and have a baby, comes a story from the Daily Mail in England blaring, “Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson on the rocks after string of arguments.” According to the latest London dispatch, the gal pals “are said to be drifting apart and bickering on a daily basis.” The same story quoted an anonymous source saying, “Sam needs her space away from Lindsay.” But apparently, Ronson doesn’t need that much space because when she deejays tonight at the Key to the Cure charity event in New York, her girlfriend will be right by her side. In fact, rather than being “on the rocks,” it seems the two are still rock solid. A rep for Lohan told Access Hollywood the story in The Daily Mail is inaccurate. “They are fine,” the rep said of LiLo and Sam. But if that weren’t enough of a denial, when asked by paparazzi in LA last night about rumors that the pair had broken up, Ronson shot back, “Are you [expletive] kidding me?!”

Honestly, this break-up report didn’t even register with me because I was actually waiting for the deluge of break-up reports to start making the rounds. As soon as a new celeb couple hooks-up, the reports start coming out that they are breaking-up. This particular report did catch my eye after Lindsay’s spokesperson went on the record to deny that the girls’ relationship was in trubs … mainly because back in September when it seemed like Lindsay was confirming her romantic relationship with Samantha on a radio program her publicist went on the record to deny that Lindsay was confirming her relationship with Sam. It seems to me, now, that by denying reports of a split further confirms that a relationship exists in the first place. I know it’s all a bit confusing but I’m just happy that 1.) there appears to be no trouble between L. Ron and 2.) her people are finally going on the record about their relationship. It’s good news all around! Do your thang, ladies!!!

Justin Gaston Does Actual Work For A Change

The model gets back to modeling
Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Model Justin Gaston, who has been spending an awful lot of downtime with his 15-year old “friend” Miley Cyrus (and her 8-year old little sister Noah), actually ended up getting back to work last night by appearing in the Ed Hardy Fashion Show at LA Fashion Week. BFF Miley attended the fashion show in lend her support to her friend. Here are a few pics of Justin on the runway, backstage at the show and of Miley making her way out thru the crush of attendees:

It’s nice to see that Justin is still able to do what he does best … look pretty. Some folks might’ve thought that mebbe Justin sees his relationship (whatever that may be) with Miley (and the entire Cyrus family) as his ticket away from having to, you know, work … but it looks like that is not the case. In between hanging out sessions with the Cyrus fam, Justin still maintains his model duties. This guy ain’t no slacker. Glad to see, Justin, that your new association with the Cyrus family hasn’t had an adverse affect on your work ethic, son. Tho, has it occurred to anyone else that designer Christian Audigier (who created the Ed Hardy line) decided to cast Justin in the runway show to lure Miley Cyrus to his fashion show?

UPDATE: After the jump, check out video of Justin Gaston talking to E! News after last night’s Ed Hardy show …

Madonna’s Tour Stops For No Man

'Sticky & Sweet' World Tour carries on despite divorce news
Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Yesterday morning we awoke to the news that Madonna and hubby Guy Ritchie have decided to divorce after 7 1/2 years of marriage but that doesn’t mean that Madonna was going to put the brakes on her Sticky & Sweet World Tour. Maddy was scheduled to perform in Boston, MA last night — the same day she confirmed the divorce news — and some people thought she might postpone or otherwise take some time away from the public spotlight, if for just a moment. No such thing happened. Madonna took to the stage as scheduled and by all accounts rocked it out as if nothing were amiss in her life … tho, a curious comment ahead of her song Miles Away (which was reportedly inspired by Guy Ritchie) seemed, at least to some concert goers, to be a tiny dig at soon-to-be ex-hubby Guy:

Madonna took to the stage in Boston Wednesday – the same day she announced the demise of her seven-and-a-half year marriage – but kept mum on her marital woes. The 50-year-old singer tore through her athletic, two-hour set with her usual enthusiasm, as 30,000 fans at the TD Bank North Garden cheered her on. The closest Madonna came to mentioning her soon-to-be-ex, Guy Ritchie, or her marriage came while introducing the song, “Miles Away.” As she has in previous shows on her Sticky and Sweet Tour, she dedicated the song to the “emotionally retarded.” “You may know a few people like that,” she said. “God knows I do” … as the mother-of-three copes with her very public split, Madonna’s fans are rallying around her. “On the day she announces her divorce from a guy she really did love, all the die-hard fans are here to support her,” said Boston concert-goer Peggy Rose. “[We] love her no matter what.”

Yeah, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Madonna will be absolutely fine in the wake of her split from hubby Guy. Pretty much everything in Madonna’s life seems to operate on her schedule to her satisfaction. I don’t really think that she is the type of person to allow things to happen in her life without her approval. Madonna is made of the sort of stern stuff of legend, not to get too hyperbolic here, and it seems to me that she will have no problem carrying on successfully no matter what major changes come her way. I suspect that Maddy and Guy will end up working thru the legalities of their divorce without much nastiness. As for the kids, well, they seem pretty used to spending their time with one parent or the other already so, sad to say, the physicality of their parents’ divorce might not affect them too much. I can see how Madge and Guy may stay friendly even after the split. I still think the break-up is very sad overall but my guess is that both parties will move forward cordially and expeditiously, wrapping up the whole matter sooner prolly than most people think. That just seems the way that Madonna operates.
