An Alaskan Legislative Committee delivers it's ruling on 'Troopergate'
Governor Sarah Palin “Unlawfully Abused Her Authority”

The New York Times is reporting that the Legislative Committee in the State of Alaska that has been charged by the Republican controlled Alaskan legislature with determining whether or not Alaska Governor Sarah Palin abused her executive power in the firing of the State’s public safety commissioner, referred to as Troopergate, has delivered its ruling. The committee has determined that Governor Sarah Palin violated the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act by firing the public safety commissioner:

A legislative committee investigating Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has found she unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state’s public safety commissioner. The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn’t the sole reason for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan but says it likely was a contributing factor. The Republican vice presidential nominee has been accused of firing a commissioner to settle a family dispute. Palin supporters have called the investigation politically motivated. Monegan says he was dismissed as retribution for resisting pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce with the governor’s sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

This is finding is absolutely appalling! I cannot, for the life of me, understand how a person who was under investigation for unlawful acts could be elevated to the position of Vice Presidential nominee … especially in light of these findings. It remains to be seen what, if any, punishment will be handed down to Governor Palin for these unlawful acts but I’m just *aghast* that we are learning this information about her just weeks before voters will determine if she is fit to serve as Vice President of this country. I’m sure the denials will be coming fast and furious from her camp in the coming hours/days but if this doesn’t serve as a HUGE WAKE-UP call then I don’t know what else could. Is this really the kind of leadership we need in this country?

On the other hand, I would like to publicly commend Senator John McCain for showing respect to Senator Barack Obama earlier today when members of a McCain rally were heard shouting, in my opinion, racist epithets about Obama. After members of various McCain rallies this week referred to Obama as an “Arab”, a “traitor” and a “terrorist”, McCain very angrily rebutted against those hateful exclamations and begged his followers to show respect for Senator Obama:

The anger is getting raw at Republican rallies and John McCain is acting to tamp it down. McCain was booed by his own supporters Friday when, in an abrupt switch from raising questions about Barack Obama’s character, he described the Democrat as a “decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States.” A sense of grievance spilling into rage has gripped some GOP events this week as McCain supporters see his presidential campaign lag against Obama. Some in the audience are making it personal, against the Democrat. Shouts of “traitor,” “terrorist,” “treason,” “liar,” and even “off with his head” have rung from the crowd at McCain and Sarah Palin rallies, and gone unchallenged by them. McCain changed his tone Friday when supporters at a town hall pressed him to be rougher on Obama. A voter said, “The people here in Minnesota want to see a real fight.” Another said Obama would lead the U.S. into socialism. Another said he did not want his unborn child raised in a country led by Obama. “If you want a fight, we will fight,” McCain said. “But we will be respectful. I admire Sen. Obama and his accomplishments.” When people booed, he cut them off. “I don’t mean that has to reduce your ferocity,” he said. “I just mean to say you have to be respectful” … On Friday, McCain rejected [the racism being espoused from a member of his Town Hall Meeting rally]. “I don’t trust Obama,” a woman said. “I have read about him. He’s an Arab.” McCain shook his head in disagreement, and said: “No, ma’am. He’s a decent, family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with (him) on fundamental issues and that’s what this campaign is all about.” He had drawn boos with his comment: “I have to tell you, he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States.”

I absolutely applaud and respect Senator John McCain for not allowing this kind of hateful ire to be thrown around during this campaign (at last). While I believe that, at times, his campaign stokes the fires of this hateful response from his followers, I commend him for being the bigger man and finally publicly chiding that hate-speech coming from his own followers. After the jump, watch video of McCain refuting the hateful, racist things that his campaign supporters are espousing about Barack Obama

Readies herself for a big weekend
Britney Spears Does Mommy Duty

Britney Spears was on hand this afternoon to pick up her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, from their Encino, CA preschool. Presumably, Britney will be spending some time with the boys this weekend and was anxious to get the jump on her quality time with them:

It’s a pretty important weekend for our dear Britney. Not only is her new official website BritneySpears.com launching later on today (at the time of this posting, it goes live in 3 hours — 7PM PT/ET) but her new music video for Womanizer is also world premiering on ABC‘s 20/20 tonight (10PM PT/ET). While the world waits with bated breath for both of these occurrences, I sincerely doubt Brit and the boys will be doing anything other than spending quality time with her children … as it should be. Woot!

Elementary, my dear readers
First Look: Robert Downey, Jr. As Sherlock Holmes

Earlier this week we saw the first pics of Jude Law rockin’ his new mustache for his role as Watson in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie … today it’s Robert Downey, Jr‘s turn to show off his new look. Here is our first look at RDJ on the set of the new Guy Ritchie-directed film based on the famed Arthur Conan Doyle character which is currently filming in Central London … behold:

Despite the fact that these photos do not feature Sherlock Holmes with his trademark pipe, I really love these pics. I just know that RDJ is gonna make a great Sherlock. I’m really looking forward to the interplay between RDJ and Jude Law. I never pegged Jude as sidekick material but I think it’s gonna work. What do y’all think?

'[REC]' gets an American redux
‘Quarantine’ Premieres In Hollywood

Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter was on hand for the Hollywood premiere of her new movie Quarantine which was held at Knott’s Berry Farm (temporarily renamed Knott’s Scary Farm) in Beuna Park, CA last night. Quarantine is the US remake of the Spanish horror film [REC] (which is absolutely horrifying). Here are a few pics of Jennifer and Heroes star Dania Ramirez (who also stars in the film):

From everything that I’ve seen from previews of Quarantine, it looks like Tarantino pretty much made an exact replica of the original Spanish film … which is good, in my opinion. I’ve seen [REC] and I loved every second of it … it’s reminiscent of Cloverfield, which I also loved immensely. If Quarantine can be as good as the Spanish original, then I think that US audiences are gonna eat it up. I love Jennifer Carpenter on Dexter so I’m excited to see her in this new film. Dania Ramirez bugs me TO DEATH on Heroes but it’s more the fault of her character rather than her own. As long as she’s not crying black tears and inadvertently killing everyone — and then whining about it afterward — in this new movie, I think I can be cool with her ;) Quarantine is in theaters now!

The TV Guide
‘What A Way To Make A Living’

Last night I got to see 9 to 5: The Musical at the Ahmanson Theater and have to say that, generally, I was very pleased with the performance. I found it very entertaining and absolutely had a really fun time. That being said, there were a few things that really didn’t gel with me and, I fear, might cause problems for the production once it moves to Broadway next year:

Let’s talk about the good stuff first. The cast is really amazing. Stephanie J. Block, Allison Janney and Megan Hilty are superb in their roles as Judy, Violet and Doralee. I swear, if you close your eyes you’d swear Megan was Dolly based on her voice alone. Each actress really embodied the spirit of her character and each shone brightly in her own respect. But my highest praise has to go to Marc Kudisch who plays Franklin Hart, Jr. (the big bad boss). Not only was he the embodiment of Mr. Hart but he was deffo the hardest working person on the stage. He is on stage for, like 90% of the show and never broke character once … nor did he fumble a line at all. I was very impressed with his performance. I must admit, tho, that I found the show too literal exactly like the movie. Every single scene was duplicated, which is impressive and all but, I felt, too obvious. The stage is very bizzy … there is a lot involved with the staging, things are happening all over the place all the time. This is a problem for the show because they had to stop the performance (bringing down the curtain and making the audience wait about 10 mins.) before the end of the show because the was a problem changing the sets. I understand this happened on opening night a few weeks ago as well. I also felt that some of the songs didn’t really work for me … I know that Dolly Parton wrote them all but in a few scenes they just didn’t seem to flow. The Roz character was given a showcase song that, while funny, felt really awkward. But, overall I did enjoy myself and had a great time … I just worry that some portions of the show may get skewered by the harsh theater press in NYC. There are a lot of little surprises thruout the show which I found very charming. I think with a little more work the show could get really tight. I really want the show to do well … I guess we’ll see if they make any changes or if they’re just gonna take the production to NY as it is.

Tonight I’m going with Darion to see Duffy at The Orpheum Theater here in LA. I quite like a couple of her songs so I’m interested to see how she sounds live. Should be a good time.

GNR set a release date, NIN to lose a member, 'CosmoGIRL!' peaces out
If GyllenSpoon can do it, why can't Rabbie?
Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish Spend A Day With The Kids

Here are a couple of really cute pics of Ryan Phillippe and his ladylove Abbie Cornish spending a lovely afternoon with his children Ava and Deacon in Brentwood, CA earlier this week:

I can’t be entirely certain but I believe this is one of (if not the) first times that Rabbie were spotted out and about with the Witherppe children. We’ve seen many photos of Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal with the kids and now it’s Rabbie‘s turn. Up until now, GyllenSpoon has enjoyed the lion’s share of the time with the kids so clearly Rabbie now feel up to the task … and I say, it’s about time! Little Deacon was all dolled up for one of his karate classes and I understand that Abbie took Ava to a flower class (whatever that is). It would appear that things are serious for both Ryan and Reese with their new partners, especially since everyone is now spending time with the children. While I’m still lamenting the dunzoness of Witherppe, I’m happy to see that they each have moved on happily and that the kids seem to be doing OK in the middle.

Becomes the third State in the US to allow same-sex marriage
Connecticut Overturns Ban On Same-Sex Marriage

Woot! The Supreme Court of Connecticut has delivered a ruling that overturns the State’s ban on same-sex marriage, determining that same-sex couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry under the State’s constitution. This means that Connecticut is now the third State in the United States of America to allow same-sex marriage, the second State to allow same-sex marriage this year alone:

Connecticut’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have the right to marry, making the state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions. The divided court ruled 4-3 that gay and lesbian couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry under the state constitution, and Connecticut’s civil unions law does not provide those couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples. “I can’t believe it. We’re thrilled, we’re absolutely overjoyed. We’re finally going to be able, after 33 years, to get married,” said Janet Peck of Colchester, who was a plaintiff with her partner, Carole Conklin. Connecticut will join Massachusetts and California as the only state to allow same-sex couples to marry. “Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice,” Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote in the majority opinion that overturned a lower court finding. “To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others,” Palmer wrote. Gov. M. Jodi Rell said Friday that she disagreed, but will not fight the ruling. “The Supreme Court has spoken,” Rell said in a statement. “I do not believe their voice reflects the majority of the people of Connecticut. However, I am also firmly convinced that attempts to reverse this decision — either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution — will not meet with success.” The lawsuit was brought in 2004 after eight same-sex couples were denied marriage licenses and sued, saying their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process were violated. They said the state’s marriage law, if applied only to heterosexual couples, denied them of the financial, social and emotional benefits of marriage. Peck said that as soon as the decision was announced, the couple started crying and hugging while juggling excited phone calls from her brother and other friends and family. “We’ve always dreamed of being married,” she said. “Even though we were lesbians and didn’t know if that would ever come true, we always dreamed of it.”

This is such amazing news! I am so thrilled that slowly but surely, equal rights for all are being recognized for citizens of the US. You can absolutely feel the winds of change blowing over our Nation … socially, it’s an exciting time to be an American. We are very close to electing our first African-American President and State by State same-sex couples are being allowed to marry just like heterosexual couples. Truly the belief that “All men are created equal” is starting to sink in ;) You may recall that the California Supreme Court also legalized same-sex marriage back in May and same-sex couples began to marry here in June. Almost immediately after, those opposed to same-sex marriage worked to get a propostion on the November ballot to ban same-sex marriage in California. It is IMPERATIVE that Californians VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 8 so that same-sex couples aren’t, once again, treated as second class citizens. It just makes common sense that ALL CITIZENS of this great country be allowed to marry. I really believe that we will get there one day, when the notion of same-sex marriage isn’t given a second thought. I’m sure that we will, one day, live in a country that treats all of its citizens equally — we’re just 47 States away now. Well done, Connecticut!!!
