Shannen Doherty Does ‘Details’ Magazine

Also, 'Radar' magazine outtakes
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Shannen Doherty is featured in the new issue of Details magazine (the one with the Gossip Girl guys on the cover) wherein she talks about shark attacks, her ex-husband and (of course) her return to the world of 90210. Here are a few of Shannen’s Details magazine photos which were shot by Michael Evanet for the mag:

Not long ago, Shannen Doherty, the once and future Brenda Walsh, took a day off from shooting the short-lived TV show North Shore in Hawaii and went on a shark-diving trip with a couple of friends. Hundreds of yards offshore, Doherty descended into the water in a protective cage. Members of the boat’s crew chummed the water, sharks gathered—and Doherty freaked. “I couldn’t breathe, I started having an anxiety attack, I couldn’t stay out of their reach,” Doherty says, shuddering. Her Irish brow crinkles into slight worry lines that make her look her age, which is 37. “They were slamming into the cage—they looked so frickin’ mean! My leg slipped a little through the bars, and a shark swam up against me and rubbed off a layer of my skin.” Doherty is telling the story in a restaurant on the Pacific Coast Highway, in Malibu, a few hundred yards from the beach. She still owns nine or ten surfboards but hasn’t been on one—or even swum in the ocean—since the shark encounter. “I tell myself the least I can do is give the ocean back to the sharks,” Doherty says. And then she giggles. “No, that’s just a bullshit rationalization—I’m just terrified now.” … Shannen Doherty may not have been a nice girl, but she is a sweet woman. Then again, there is nowhere to go but up after you’ve singlehandedly defined the modern American mean girl. The journey began with her performance in 1989’s Heathers, as the quiet yet lethal member of the troika of button-nosed title characters. But Doherty went hard-core after she was cast on Beverly Hills, 90210, which made its debut in 1990. As Brenda Walsh, she played a virginal daughter of Minnesota relocated to the zip code of the entitled and wealthy. Brenda was initially a likable, naïve beauty, but her equanimity didn’t last long: she soon morphed into Elizabeth I in Guess jeans, adopting a kill-or-be-killed attitude toward all of teendom. Kurt Cobain’s refrain “Here we are now, entertain us” might have captured the nineties Zeitgeist, but so did Brenda’s Season 2 bon mot, “To be a bitch or not to be a bitch—that is the question.” “I don’t think Brenda was a complete brat,” Doherty says. “She was fueled by her insecurities: not being from Beverly Hills, not feeling safe in that environment. And then the love of her life was stolen from her. That can really injure a young girl’s esteem.” Alas, poor Doherty was playing the role of a lifetime as her TV and real-life personae began to merge. There was boy trouble and more boy trouble. Doherty’s relationship with Dean Factor, heir to the Max Factor makeup fortune, ended when a restraining order was filed against her after she allegedly tried to run him down with her car. (Her memorable line: “If I really wanted to run him over, I wouldn’t have missed.”) Then there was a teen-angst-worlds-colliding liaison with Judd Nelson. Next Doherty met George Hamilton’s son, Ashley. They married after two weeks; the union lasted all of seven months. Her chaotic personal life exacted a professional toll. Amid rumors that she was consistently showing up late to the set, Doherty left Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1994, after the fourth season. She lay low for a while, except for a winning turn in Kevin Smith’s Mallrats in 1995 and an appearance in Playboy. Then, in 1998, Aaron Spelling cast her in Charmed—as an actual witch—opposite Alyssa Milano. Just as the “Shannen is back” story line began to gel, she quit, reportedly because she was at odds with Milano. But that was seven years ago. Since then Doherty has, much to her relief, fallen off the tabloid radar. “I have a great life now,” Doherty says. She owns three horses and rides them obsessively, and her parents live a five-minute drive away. “If you could see me with my horse Picasso, how I call his name and he sticks his head out of his stall and then licks me from the neck up—that’s what my life is like now,” she says. “It’s really kind of boring.” An obvious question arises: If Shannen Doherty is so happy with her placid life, why is she raising Brenda Walsh from the dead?

And the Details article, which you can read HERE, goes on to answer that question. The one question that isn’t answered in her interview is how the magazine stylist managed to convince her to wear that horribly outdated leather vest for the shoot? It looks exactly like the sort of outfit that Brenda Walsh would’ve worn back in the day … and mebbe I just answered my own question. I’ve yet to grow tired of all the Brenda Walsh/90210 hoopla but it can’t last much longer … especially since this week’s ep (which aired last night) was the last ep of 90210 to feature Doherty for some time. How much longer can she milk this role? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

After the jump, check out a few new outtake photos from Shannen’s feature in Radar magazine along with some outtake portions of her interview with the mag …

Siouxsie Sioux Ends Her ‘Mantaray & More’ Tour

Going back in the studio to record a new album
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Pink reader Mykah was able to attend the finale show of Siouxsie Sioux’s Mantaray & More Tour at Koko in London, England Monday night and was cool enough to send in a few pics taken by photographer Sidney Rosa the live performance. Here are a few pics and some info about the show itself:

Siouxsie played her last gig from the Mantaray & More Tour on Monday the 29th @ Koko in london. The show was recorded for a future DVD release. Siouxsie Will be returning to the studio shortly to start work on another studio album which she revealed to Nemone for the BBC on Radio 6 music.

You may recall that I was lucky enough to see Siouxsie (of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Creatures fame) live in concert in NYC with my very good friend Diana this past February so I am very grateful to Mykah for giving us the head’s up about this show and am really looking forward to the DVD release of this performance. Sioux is a musical goddess and I weep for those of you who are unfamiliar with her work. She is truly a legend and I am just thrilled that she is showing no signs of retirement. While I’m not too keen on the sparkly Bea Arthur-like dress that Sioux wears in that last pic, I just love the woman and her craft to death. Now that she’s completed a year of touring, I hope she is able to rest up and will be comin’ back at us with a new disc of material very soon.

Letters To Cleo Is Reuniting For A Mini-Tour This Fall

The comfort of a knowledge of a rise above the sky above could never parallel the challenge of an acquisition in the here and now
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Woot! A little bird gave me the head’s up that Billboard magazine is reporting that 90’s band Letters To Cleo are reuniting this Fall for a short mini-tour that will bring back the core group of original band members for a few West and East Coast shows. Folks may recall that Letters To Cleo had a big radio hit with their song Here and Now and enjoyed a pretty successful string of albums in the mid-90’s. As a fan of the group (and of lead singer Kay Hanley’s subsequent solo career), I am very excited by this news:

Boston-based rock outfit Letters To Cleo will reunite after an eight-year hiatus for four shows this fall. Original members Kay Hanley (vocals), Greg McKenna and Michael Eisenstein (guitars) and Stacy Jones (drums) will join forces with Joe Klompus (bass, replacing original bassist Scott Riebling) when the gigs get underway Nov. 8 in Los Angeles. The reunion follows a brief impromptu performance last year during a Boston benefit, which featured the hits “Here & Now” and “Awake.” Says Eisenstein, “We were excited, the crowd was excited, and from that point on, it just seemed like we should try to find a time to do it for real.” Letters To Cleo sprung from Boston on the strength of the 1993 album “Aurora Gory Alice,” which featured “Here & Now.” The group disbanded in 2000, with Hanley moving onto a solo career and such projects as the Disney Channel’s “My Friend Tigger and Pooh” and voicing Josie in the 2001 film “Josie and the Pussycats.”

This is awesome, awesome news for fans of the group. Stacy Jones left LTC to join Veruca Salt around 1997 and then went on to form his own band American Hi-Fi (remember Flavor of the Weak? That was them). LTC put out a couple more albums and then Kay, as the Billboard article states, did her own solo thing after the band broke up in 2000. Kay provided the singing voice on the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack (which was full of amazingly fun pop songs and is deffo worth checking out) and has put out a couple albums on her own for sale on her official website. Yes, the LTC kids have been very bizzy on their own … but this reunion tour (Nov. 8: Los Angeles – Roxy, Dec. 8-9: Boston – Paradise Rock Club and December TBA: New York -venue TBA) is really amazing news. I know that I will be deffo be at the LA show fo’ shizzle. I am very much looking forward to welcoming back Letters to Cleo to the performance stage :)

David Banda Celebrates The Jewish New Year

He's growing into a good Jewish-like son
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

This past Monday was the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah (Happy Belated New Year to all my Jewish peoples) and Madonna, being the good Kabbalist that she is, made sure that at least one of her kids and she attended services together at the Kabbalah Centre in NYC. Here are a few ADORABLE photos of Maddy with her young son David Banda (who was rockin’ a pretty spiffy yarmulke, if I do say so myself) making their way into and out of the Kabbalah Centre this week:

Madonna whisked her Malawian son David off to worship at a Kabbalah centre while on a break from her Sticky and Sweet tour in New York last night. The three-year-old, dressed in a white outfit, clung to his superstar mother as they arrived for a service at the temple. The 50-year-old, dressed in a floral print frock and long black cardigan, was also accompanied by her manager Guy Oseary. Across the globe, husband Guy Ritchie was enjoying a night out with the couple’s son Rocco, 7, at London’s Cipriani restaurant. Madonna made no secret of her plans to raise her youngest son as a follower of Kabbalah when she first took over as his carer, but insists he is free to be a Christian like his biological father when he’s older. The singer, who began studying the mystical offshoot of Judaism in 1996, has raised her biological children Lourdes,11, and Rocco, 7, as Kabbalists with the help of husband Guy. David regularly wears a red Kabbalah bracelet on his wrist and Madonna has previously said: “I believe in Jesus and I study the Kabbalah, so I don’t see why he can’t too. If David decides he wants to be a Christian, then so be it.” Madonna is gearing up to perform four dates in Madison Square Garden, New York this month and will end the tour will end in Sao Paolo, Brazil, on December 18.

So cute … I think the yarmulke really suits little David, don’t you? It’s impressive that while Madonna is currently consumed with a world tour of pretty epic proportions she still manages to carve out vacation time and worship time for and with her children. Madonna is proof positive that you really can have it all if you work hard enough. Love it.

Who Is Blake Lively Kissing In Times Square?

It's not who you'd expect
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Okay … so Blake Lively was snapped filming a pretty interesting scene for an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl where her character Serena van der Woodsen is filming a kissing scene with a boy in Times Square … but it surely isn’t the boy you’re prolly thinking it is:

So as not to spoil this future ep any further, I’ll keep all speculation and conjecture behind the cut. After the jump, see a bunch of photos from the filming of this scene and find out who Blake/Serena is swappin’ spit with …

Daniel Radcliffe Reveals A Co-Star ‘Crush’

It's prolly not who you think
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Daniel Radcliffe has confessed to writing steamy, sexual notes to one of his Equus co-stars in order to “wind up” the person … but it’s prolly not the co-star you’re imagining. No, it’s not theater veteran actor Richard Griffiths, it’s not even his female co-star Anna Camp … no, Dan has confessed to writing these sexy notes to 31 year old Lorenzo Pisoni, who plays the horse Equus on stage:

Daniel Radcliffe sends sexy letters to his ‘Equus’ co-star. The ‘Harry Potter’ actor is currently starring alongside Lorenzo Pisoni in the Broadway production of the play – in which Daniel bares all for his role as a horse-obsessed stable boy – and has revealed he gave the 31-year-old actor a series of raunchy notes on the show’s opening night. Daniel said: “We’re getting on very well indeed. I’ve written some really, really deeply sexual things on some of the cards I’ve given him for opening night. But just to wind him up, you know.” The 19-year-old star added he is in awe of Lorenzo, terming him “cool” and “gorgeous” before claiming he would even consider marrying him if he was gay. He said: “He’s great. He’s a truly remarkable man. If I was gay or a female I’d just want to marry him. He’s gorgeous, and he’s really cool bloke as well.”

Well then, isn’t that lovely. I must say, I am quite impressed that Daniel would have no qualms about saying these sorts of things about his very handsome co-star. Surely many people will take this revelation as proof that Dan is gay or even questioning but I honestly believe the opposite. It takes a person very secure with who they are to say things like this in public without fearing any reprisal. Sure, these comments may come back to haunt him but I’m pretty sure he’s OK with whatever anyone has to say about him. It’s impressive. That being said, I’m dying to know what sorts of “raunchy” things he wrote to Lorenzo … just curious ;)
