Total ‘Eclipse’

The TV Guide
September 2nd, 2008

So, I made it back home to SoCal from Detroit safe and sound … another perfect flight without delays or baggage mishaps. I wish I could be totally contented with my travel yesterday except that because it was September 1, I was forced to pay $15 to check a bag of luggage for my flight. I guess most if not all airlines are now charging for every bag you check for flight … which, I think, really sucks. But, what are you gonna do? Before I had to catch my plane, Sarah, Mark and I went out for lunch at BD’s Mongolian BBQ and then snapped one last photo before I had to take off:

I really miss Sarah, Mark, all my Detroit peeps and family already … I can’t wait to get back to see them.

While flying back home yesterday, I was able to finish book 3 of the Twilight series Eclipse:

Even tho I still have a bit of difficulty with some of the hallmarks of this book series (specifically Bella’s weak nature) I am really caught up in the story. I loved the dichotomy that sprung up between the two loves of her life, Edward the vampire and Jacob the werewolf. I can see where the folks who are rooting for Jacob to win Bella’s heart are coming from. I find him much more endearing than Edward. All in all, the books are really an entertaining guilty pleasure for me. I really thought the corny parts of the books would get to me but I really don’t have a problem with them. Sure, I would love the prose to be a bit less … dorky (wack? nerdy? I dunno how exactly to categorize it) but if you just go with it, it’s not really so bad. I get that Stephenie Meyer is creating a world with her novels, the characters are not as “hip” as in other books (no matter how much she tries to “hip” them up with fancy cars, etc.) but they are consistent. You get lost in this world … and I can deffo see the appeal. I’m sold. I began reading Breaking Dawn last night … I’m intrigued where this book will take the story. I can tell by the Table of Contents that Meyer does change things up with this last book. I’m curious to see how it all ends. I’ve read up to the part of Bella and Edward’s honeymoon (which was a bit ridic to picture, I mean sex between those two characters seems so … wrong) and I have no idea where the story goes from there. The marriage seems like a great place to end the story … what could possibly be next? I guess I’ll find out.

In between reading chapters last night, I did watch the season premiere of Gossip Girl … which I enjoyed for the most part. I tried to watch Prison Break but I think I’m finally over that show. I don’t even care anymore. I’m to scratch that one off my DVR record list.

By chapter 4, Breaking Dawn had me going “You’re not going to take it down that road are you?” and then by chapter 7 I was like “Ok you took it there, and you’ve officially left me uninterested”. I trudged through the rest of the book. My friend referred to it as the literary equivalent to Blue Balls.

  2. Judy Says:

I agree completely with your feelings over all over this series! It does suck you in. I can visualize the situations.
The consumating was bizarre, but, at the same time, you just want to scream at them, “JUST DO IT ALREADY!”…

    As for Prison Break….

    *SPOILER*
Don’t give up on *just* yet! Sarah’s not dead, Whistler gets “peaced out”.
They’re all working together, even with Bellick…minus T-Bag, of course!

  3. Kiki Says:

Breaking Dawn everthing happens that you could want to happen and you’re still left with the taste in your mouth you get when you down to many beers in one sitting and throw up some pretzels. Classy.

Once your done you must must must go to Smeyer’s website and read the first chunk of Midnight Sun, Twilight from Edwards perspective.

  4. Beth Says:

Aww man, you can’t give up on prison break, last night’s ep was really good, if you can suspend your disbelief for the vampire series, surely you can for michqael scofield and sara tancredi

  5. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

I can’t wait to read this book series!!

I flew southwest earlier this week and they are the only airline not charging for checking luggage. I think that is so crazy they are doing that. What, I am not suppose to fly with anything. I can understand charging for a second bag but for the first one???? BULLSHIT!!

  6. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

Well, I am excited that Sara is alive and well :) But they’re breaking into something again? I’m afraid it’s too much … it looks like it’s gonna get really complicated. I wish that Michael and Sara could just go off into the sunset together … no more breaking ;)

  7. Amber Lynn Says:

I know how you feel. My bestie got me hooked last Thursday and I am half way done with Breaking Dawn. I love them. I do agree that Bella is totally weak but you’ll see in Breaking Dawn that changes lol.

I can’t wait for the movie. I like to see how bad they mess up the books concept. Although Stephenie Meyers is involved (like she was on the set) so it might not be that bad.

  8. Christine Says:

I took a long road trip from SoCal to Park City this weekend. I read all 4 books in a week and finished Breaking Dawn last night. I, college-educated small business owner, LOVED the entire series. And KiKi is correct….go read the prespective from Edward in Midnight Sun.. It’s going to be really good as well. I’m anxiously anticipating the movie in November. YEAH.

  9. Nat Says:

I guess y’all haven’t heard that Smeyers is postponing Midnight Sun indefinitely because part of it leaked??

  10. Joe Says:

Dude, I am soo glad you are enjoying the series!!
Don’t forget that Bella just seems weak being that she is surrounded by mythological creatures with super human strength. Any human (not just a girl but a guy as well) would seem weak compared to them! =)
I find her VERY brave actually, facing a den of human killing vampires in New Moon to save Edward and trying to save everyone in Eclipse.(Jacob, Edward and Seth; even though they had it under control)
You got to give her props!
Very stubborn and very brave for ANY human.

  11. nicole Says:

guilty pleasure for me too. =)
jacob’s part in breaking dawn is my favorite. <3

  12. bev.g. Says:

it’s a guilty pleasure. It’s like a Roswell/Buffy to me, but more teenie. I loved the first 2 books a lot!

  13. Franny Says:

Ahhh Gossip Girl, fully the best show on in my opinion, bit lax on the drama last night though wasn’t it, here’s hoing for next week…
And I loved breaking dawn, it ties everything up nicely without me worrying for any of the characters if that makes sense.

  14. na Says:

    Hey there Trent!!

Sorry, i’m not commenting on the book! I am actually commenting on THE Mangolian BBQ…….. (tHAT pLACE rOCKs!!!!) I recently visited one in CO and fell in love if only they expanded there franchises to Houston,TX………. le sigh……………

  15. Sarah Rachel Says:

Yep- I fall into the 27 year old, college educated professional who LOVED the whole Twilight Series. Someone mentioned it to me a long time ago and I rolled my eyes and said something like “I don’t do weird vampire books”. Turns out, I do! ;-)
I’m pretty heart broken about Steph Meyers not writing Midnight Sun. The first 264 pages were even better than Twilight. I hope she gets over it and finishes the book.

  16. Heather Says:

ahh I love the series! You’ll love Breaking Dawn! And definitely check out the draft that Stephenie Meyer has of Midnight Sun– it’s really great and I fervently hope that she finishes!!!!

  17. Tess Says:

I LOVE how Edward dazzles with his sparkliness.

  18. Roisin Says:

    Team EDWARD, or Team jacob?

  19. Ashers Says:

    Dichotomy, loves it!

  20. Leen Says:

Jacob isn’t a werewolf though he even says he isnt he’s a shape shifter!!
Bella thinks he’s one but later on it explains that Jacob explains that he is a shapeshifter his whole pack just takes on that form.

  21. Nykki Says:

I am so excited that you’re reading this series. I finished Breaking Dawn the weekend it came out and let me tell you, even though it has its flaws (like every book does), its really interesting so see that one person could imagine this world and these characters. It really does suck you in for a wonderful ride.

  22. Rachel Says:

i loved breaking dawn. it shocked the hell out of me, but i loved it.

  23. erica Says:

I totally agree with whoever said that Bella seems weak compared to all those mythological creatures! Just give her time! Breaking Dawn will help clear some of that up!!! I love the entire series!!! I can’t wait for the movie too!!!

  24. Beck Says:

I LOVED the whole series! I couldn’t believe how it all turned out in the end…I’m 32 with a 4yr old child and I couldn’t put these damn books down! They were the perfect guilty pleasure!

  25. Angela Says:

Trent believe me..you will love Breaking Dawn. I felt like you when I started reading it but it just got better after..trust me.

  26. Kay Says:

    You won’t be disappointed<3

  27. no Says:

Jesus Christ GET OVER BREAKING DAWN EVERYONE.
    it was a total dissapointment.

btw, you giving up on prison break completely hurt me ):
    i love it<3

  28. swiminflowers7 Says:

Team Edward here. 25 years old. No College Education but I do own my own business. I love this book. To be honest I didn’t catch on until I saw Robert Pattinson on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. I adore him so I got into the series. Breaking Dawn only took me two days. New Moon was hard to read through tears and Eclipse was just Thrilling. Midnight Sun would of been awesome but people suck. I did read the first chapter on her site and it was great.

and JOE said it best about Bella “Don’t forget that Bella just seems weak being that she is surrounded by mythological creatures with super human strength. Any human (not just a girl but a guy as well) would seem weak compared to them! =)”

TEAM TWILIGHT & SMEYERS ALL THE WAY!!!

  29. adrinila Says:

Trent, I think that this books are great, I agree with you on the characters, they need more than the passion for each other. Like you I’m reading the honeymoon part Breaking Dawn, I don’t know what to expect!.

  30. GossipGirlFan Says:

TRENT! Talk to us about Gossip Girl. Your alway’s posting things about the cast and fashion snaps. Dish on what you think of the show!!!! You may not know this… but I love Gossip Girl. Serena’s outfit and Hairdo in last nights ep was otherworldly!!

  31. Dani Says:

Team Edward here!!!! I knew nothing about these books until I started hearing about the movie. I bought Twilight and four days later finished Breaking Dawn. I honestly dont understand the negativity towards it at all, I personally thought it was a perfect ending to the saga. I cant wait for the movie. Im also extremely disappointed about Midnight Sun. Hope you enjoy the book!!!!

  32. lalalala Says:

im a huge fan of the twilight series……..BREAKING DAWN is crazy i loved it but i have a feeling you might not and i definitely would like to hear what u have to say about it….. once u finish breaking dawn u must definitely go to the authors website and read the chapters of another book she put on hold it basically twilight from edwards perspective….. you really get to see more of why edward is the way he is….it is the best i think out of all the books and its nto even a book

  33. Sharon Says:

Read half of breaking dawn then don’t bother finishing it. Ha ha, not worth it.

  34. Cassie Says:

I LOVED the books, read them straight pretty much.

Breaking Dawn was awesome up until well, you’ll see. She shoulda left it at the honeymoon.

  35. pmk Says:

This series feels like it should be called Anita Blake Vampire Hunter: The Teen Years. (Before Laurell K. Hamilton went all sex crazy in the series)

  36. Michelle's Spell Says:

    Hey Trent,

Love the Detroit pictures. You and Sarah look gorgeous! Hope you’re back enjoying the LA sunshine!

  37. Becky Says:

Oh, I forgot to mention that once you finish the series, you really should go to this link:

    http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/2008/08/02/

She recaps the whole series and it’s seriously the most hilarious thing I’ve ever read. She’s awesome! A blogger from Time Magazine said she made him believe in the internet again.

  38. Lauri Says:

I totally felt like Breaking Dawn was a fanfic.

    I didn’t hate it…
it was just sooo very weak.

  39. Squiggle Says:

Does no one else have a problem with the fact that not once in the first three novels do they seem to discuss Bella ever getting her period?!…… wouldn’t have have an effect on the whole vampire fiending blood thing….. and why is their only concern with sex, him crushing her…. what about her bleeding? I know he has built up a resistance to her blood, but you’d think it would still be something that is brought up, it’s real life….. those are the only things that drove me completely nuts in the first three…. I haven’t read the fourth yet, though i’m not too excited about it reading everyone’s comments…..

  40. Puja Says:

I think you summed up my feelings towards Twilight in that post. It’s a love-hate relationship with the Twilight series. I’m glad you liked Eclipse though, it’s my favourite in the series. Anyways, have fun reading Breaking Dawn. I wonder what you’ll think about it…

  41. Sarah Says:

Ah no spoilers I’m half way through Eclipse!! I’m in obsessed mode I can’t wait to know what happens

  42. Zanne Says:

Squiggle, yes, Stephenie Meyer does answer the period question. It’s either on her website or on http://www.twilightlexicon.com in a FAQ section.

I’m 30 w/ kids and working on my Master’s degree and I’ve been sucked in by the Twilight series too! When I first started reading Breaking Dawn I was disappointed with the angle that she took but I ended up enjoying the book as a whole. Twilight is still my favorite and I am deeply disappointed that Midnight Sun is on indefinite hold. :( I thoroughly enjoyed the 264 pg draft she posted on her website though and hope that she’ll eventually finish it.

  43. mdu Says:

no gossip girl review??? the start was a little slow but got better as the show progressed…

  44. erica Says:

To squiggles: I read somewhere that Bella’s period does not affect Edward because the blood from her period is dead blood therefore not the same blood that he craves. I can’t remember at the moment where I read that, maybe on a blog perhaps.

  45. Hannah Says:

I’m not sure why you keep mentioning the fact that Bella has a weak nature. Most teenage girls DO have weak natures. It takes most people until their 20’s to develop a stronger sense of self. Accident prone DOES happen too. I enjoy her writing because it is NOT hip and teeny. It’s about the story, the characters being believable and people you can relate too.

I loved Breaking Dawn. I’d love to see a sequel from Renesmee’s perspective sometime in the future. To tie up the last little bit in there.

  46. shell Says:

NOOOOOOOOOOO. PRISON BREAK WAS ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD.

the episode reminded me of the second season. very interesting, not boring anymore. a lot of actual action. WATCH IT! hahahaha

    <33333

  47. Samantha Says:

I dont know if anyone heard, but stephanie meyer is putting midnight sun on hiatus! A big issue was the “former fans” – I just noticed that alot of ppl on this site were bashing breaking dawn. Even though the book was very different than the others there’s no need to be insulting and rude. The way the story ended is the way it was meant to end.

P.S. married people have sex- get over it.

  48. Lex Says:

Yes i have been covering that,She said she wasn’t doing it now shes saying maybe i hate her giving her fans false hope like this.I did read the 12 chapters of midnight sun she put on her site.I said to myself i might as well (at the time she said she wasn’t doing it) read it anyway. So yeah pretty amazing.
I love the twilight series can’t wait for the

    Breaking Dawn simply amazing.
I hate the bashers of breaking dawn you need to grow up.As time goes on people change and stephenie did.She changed so the books did. You’re lucky you even got the twilight series!!!Yes get over it married people have sex.I didn’t think it was wrong for them to have sex just its diffrent you know all that space between them both and then all of a sudden broken headboards, feathers everywhere and bellas bruises!
I hated the fact there was ….no sex scene to be honest were did it go i mean i looked forward to only 2 things them getting married and the sex scene. And both left me down! Yay they got married and had sex but it was boring stupid 9 year olds reading the book!
    T_T
I agree i hate bella’s character.Shes like a character that would be back in Emily Brontes time hello yes shes a teenage girl but no teenage girl on the planet in the 21st century is as weak and so dependant like her.
She makes us Females look like morons!
Bring on a book with a strong and independant female character and il be happy.

    Lex

  49. Lex Says:

Yes what was with that…never was there a thing with her period and especially with edward around at the start and the blood OH WHAT A MESS! what would have happened lmao.
    Not practical.
    Anyway yes confusing!
all in all i love the twilight series!

    Lex
