The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards

Britney! Britney! Britney!
September 8th, 2008

Okay, even tho I already devoted an entire post to Britney Spears’s triumphant night at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, any mention of the show by ALL of the press (including THIS report from Time magazine) seems to devote a good portion of their reporting to Miss Britney Spears. But, there were other people and other things going on at the VMAs yesterday … here are a few pics of some of the folks who walked the red carpet yesterday (it should be noted that Britney did not walk the red carpet, choosing instead to keep her revelation of the night strictly for the show itself):

For the most part, I found the red carpet pretty tame … I mean, there really weren’t that many “hot messes” to speak of. Of course you had your usual poor fashion choices (that red and black dress did not really work on P!nk for me, nor did I like Rihanna’s outfit choice … Xtina looked hawt!) but that’s to be expected. Personally, I had a hard time focusing while on the red carpet … we were lined up in the blazing SoCal sun hours before the first celeb walked the carpet … it wasn’t that pleasant. I did get to snap some fun pics and meet a few very COOL folks … but I’ll post those pics a bit later on.

As for the show itself, I have not yet been able to watch it in its entirety, properly but I did manage to catch most of it on the huge screens that were plastered all over the VIP green room last night. After the jump, check out some pics from the show itself and take one more look at Xtina Aguilera’s amazing performance …

No Madonna kiss. No Michael Jackson cameo. No flying Howard Stern. Not even a Kanye tantrum. MTV has set a high standard for the unexpected at its Video Music Awards, but on the show’s 25th anniversary, the network instead settled for throwing its full support behind Britney Spears’ comeback. Spears won a leading three awards, including video of the year for Piece of Me. Any spontaneity was left to host Russell Brand, the British comic whose rock star style and outlandish candor gave the Los Angeles show a pulse. But at the end of the night Sunday, even the manic and mangy Brand — a confessed former sex addict — could only summon a comic semi-feud with the young Jonas Brothers over their premarital celibacy. But while Brand was unpredictable, witty and offensive, Spears was resolutely careful, determined to set right her pop star image. She was, after all, returning to the scene of the crime, so to speak. At last year’s VMAs — Britney Comeback 1.0 — her unpolished performance was roundly disparaged. In each acceptance speech Sunday, Spears spoke briefly, thanked God and dedicated the awards to her fans. Even while opening the show, she was all business, zipping through her few lines of introduction. “Thank you so much,” she said flatly as the crowd greeted her with a standing ovation. “Thank you for all the love.” MTV has a habit of reengineering the VMAs every year, and, true to form, took this year’s show to the Paramount Studios lot in Los Angeles. After last year’s awards, splashed throughout a Las Vegas hotel, MTV re-centered the action to a more traditional main stage. The performances, though, often traveled back into the reaches of the Paramount lot. The Jonas Brothers played their song Lovebug on a fake building’s stoop, before the set fell away and throngs of screaming fans ran down fictional city streets to surround them. Unwittingly, the Jonas Brothers — one of the hottest young acts to the MTV audience — became the night’s biggest talking point. Brand repeatedly joked about their purity rings, which each wears as a symbol of their vow not to have premarital sex. At one point, Brand brandished one as if he had won it from a Jonas brother. American Idol champ — and fellow promise ring wearer — Jordin Sparks defended the brothers while presenting an award: “I just wanna say, it’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, OK?” Brand was happy to apologize for any hurt feelings, but only to such a degree. After the show, he told The Associated Press, “I feel a bit bad that I kept talking about their vows to chastity and I’d like to take this opportunity to say no one ever have sex again. It’s a mad idea. What a way to spend an evening.” A celebrity in England but relatively unknown in the States, Brand proved an interesting mix with the VMA crowd, who seemed unsure of how to react to his lack of political correctness. In his opening monologue, he joked about Madonna, virgins and President Bush, whom he called “that retarded cowboy fellow.” He pleaded, “Please, America, elect Barack Obama. On behalf of the world.” Some in the star-studded crowd cheered, while others — like Spears — sat quietly. The rest of the evening was mostly given to performances, many of which paired performers in unusual combinations. The prim and proper Leona Lewis joined Lil’ Wayne, who later joined Kid Rock. Lil’ Wayne took home the best hip hop video for Lollipop … Closing the night was Kanye West who, like Spears, was hoping for a second chance after a disappointing VMA experience last year. In Las Vegas, he had a Kanye-sized hissy fit backstage and vowed never to appear at the VMAs again after he didn’t get a Moonman trophy despite several nominations. West again went home without an award this year; there were only eight awards in total. Videos from Chris Brown (With You), Linkin Park (”Shadow of the Day) and the Pussycat Dolls (When I Grow Up) took home awards for best male video, best rock video and best dancing in a video, respectively. Best new artist went to Tokio Hotel, while Spears’ Piece of Me won for best female video, best pop video and video of the year.

Much congrats to all the winners, especially Tokio Hotel who managed to pull off the biggest surprise win (Best New Artist) of the night, I thought. A few folks have mentioned that they didn’t believe that Britney Spears’s Piece of Me was deserving of Video of the Year but I contend that Britney has been owed Video Music Awards for years and it was time to pay up. I find it absolutely apropos that she won big last night. Regarding Russell Brand’s opening political remarks well … they didn’t sit too well with some folks. Not 10 mintues after he cracked his jokes, I received an email from an angry reader in Dallas, TX who found Brand’s remarks “biased” and “insulting” and was especially angry at MTV for allowing “a foreigner to insult the United States President and be cheered on by all the role models of Americas”. This reader went on to say that “MTV should be burned for treason”, which I feel is taking things a bit far but this was their opinion. Personally, I expected Brand to do or say something outrageous because that is what he is known for in the UK. I mean, jokes are jokes … Brand did what he could to make himself stand out and I think he accomplished his mission. But, again, for me that wasn’t the focus of the night. All in all, from what I saw, MTV did a great job staging the VMAs all over the Paramount lot … I thought it was inventive to use the backlot areas for live performances. Kanye West’s closing performance was really hot. Outside, with all those lights and possibly a few drummers from the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Beijing, China … he really turned it out. BUT, I do contend that Xtina gave the hottest performance of the night. In case you missed it, check it out again:

On fire! Despite the lip syncing (which many people have a problem with — for live performances like this, I have no problem at all), I found Xtina’s performance electrifying. When she came out with that mask on, I thought YES! FINALLY she gets it! And there was no red lipstick, WIN! WIN! WIN!

And so, another MTV Video Music Awards (the 25th) is in the can … what did y’all think of the show overall?

  1. Nancy Says:

YAY! I love loved x-tina’s performance! I don’t get why so many people are trippin about her lip synching … considering this is one of the FIRST times she’s done something like that. She killed it last night!

  2. Judy Says:

Loved the VMAs! I really liked Pink’s performance. TI’s was cute too. Rhianna looked fierce in that performance!
I loved Brit’s second dress! Her skit in the beginning was cute.
One question, what was up with that kid who played McLovin’?

  3. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

Why is one person’s opinion more important than any other? I think MTV finally got it right this time :)

  4. Tiffany Says:

    I think Brand’s political commentary was spot-on.

  5. Chivonne Says:

Shove it up your ass The Punisher.
Who gives a fuck at the end of the day. The VMAs honestly don’t hold much lift like the grammy’s do. t’s more of just a showy mess that mtv can claim as their own.

ANYWAYS. Xtina was great! Britney was amazing. The show kinda was bad overall. It was messy and scattered. Brand was a complete moron. I didn’t think he was funny AT ALL. it was awkward to watch him. and lol. he pissed off legions of the jonas fans. he better watch his back. those kids are crazed

  6. Nicole Says:

trent im finally happy you gave christina some love =)

  7. anna Says:

russell brand was the best part of the show– he was hysterical and i loved it. i have a major problem with lip synching, especially with such a talented artist. britney should not have won just because she hasnt in the past

  8. Jen Says:

I don’t know, I didn’t like Christina’s performance at all. It was so not her. Since when is she into all this elaborate choreography and dancing over singing?? I thought she claimed she was forced to do all that pop stuff for her first album and that now she is a real “arist”. Not to mention all her crowing about how everything always has to be “top to bottom live” for her shows. It just wasn’t original and all I could think about the entire thing was that Britney could have done it better because those are her strengths. Christina should have just been herself instead of going for some gimmick. She’s known for her singing so when someone hires her for a performance, she should sing, and this is from someone who doesn’t even like her voice most of the time because she usually oversings. It’s like she gave up her “artistry” such as it is, to pimp her new greatest hits album and fragrance. Boo!

  9. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

I really like XTina’s performance. Her new song is hawt. She seems to be channeling Lady GaGa a bit thou. Either way it was good. Pink and Kid-Rock did a really good job too! I really didn’t care for RIRI. It was something I feel she has done a million times. The show for me was very boring. I didn’t care to much for it at all. Oh well, the VMA’s will never be what they were in the years past! Hey at least it was short this year and not like 3 hours.

  10. tiffany Says:

I live in dallas and thinks that my fellow texan needs calm down!! Russell Brand was so funny and for me he was one of the highlights of the show.

  11. Danielle Says:

I agree with Trent about Britney deserving this win. When she was on top of the pop charts she never won but always came and performed. Her video for Pieces Of Me is a good video, maybe not the best but she was due for an award at this show. I am sure most people who watched the awards were watching for Britney. I loved how great she looks and how real she seemed. It was refreshing to see this side of Britney once again.

All I thought when I watched Christina was it was very Britney. The outfit like Trent said was just like the Onyx Hotel Tour. I also thought her rendition of Genie In A Bottle was very much like how Britney did “Hit Me Baby..One more time” during the Onyx Hotel Tour. I do love her new song though.

  12. Denise Says:

Britney looked beautiful, Rihanna sucked!(that’s what she gets for laughing at Britney last year…KARMA’S A BITCH!…AND BRITNEY GOT AN AWARD OVER HER..HA!), X-tina’s new song was awesome…the outfit didn’t really do good for her figure but her performance was really good, and PINK killed it!..she is a kick ass female..i loved the song and i loved the performance!

  13. CC Says:

I LOVED Russell Brand! “Retarded cowboy fellow”… I nearly fell off the couch!
    Oh, and I’m a Texan.

  14. tifa Says:

I honestly only watched for Britney. That’s two years in a row they’ve lured me in with her. I ff’d everything except Russell, Britney, Rihanna, Xtina, and anything Brit was nominated for. So, I greatly enjoyed the parts I saw.

  15. RILEY Says:

    I agree with Jen ^^

I don’t hate Christina at all, but the girl changes so much that I don’t know who the “real” Christina is supposed to be. So many “gimmicks” as I believe someone already said. And she always looks so made up and fake.

I’m glad Brit looked great & swept the awards. Too bad she didn’t perform, but there’s always the Billboards!

  16. LOVECarrie Says:

Russell Brand was funny, but I thought he kept harping on the JoBros too much. Give the kids a break! I will give him the line of the night: “8 years of bush, what the Jonas Brothers with go through during their bachelor party.” LMAO! Other than that, the VMAs this year were boring, uninspired and the setting felt too small. Britney looked almost back to her old self, but I don’t think she should’ve won all 3 awards. Best New Artist was a joke! And for the record, Britney CLAPPED when Brand made the comment about electing Obama as president. Trust me, I noticed it! She wasn’t as obvious as Chris Brown, but still…

  17. Cinta Says:

I didn’t like the whole Brand thing in general….. AT ALL!

  18. Kendra Says:

Whether it was fixed or not, Britney has a TON of people supporting her..I don’t think it’s too far fetched to think that enough of her fans voted for her to win those awards..Like Danielle said, when she was at the top of her game, she didn’t get the love..It’s her time..As I said before, I really could have done without Russell’s political commentary..I think people need to make up their own minds about their vote, but unfortunately, some people would rather go with what’s popular with their favorite artists..I felt it was a bit out of line, but as Trent said, he’s known for being outrageous..I thought he was trying to keep the show together and didn’t really succeed..That show was a mess!! But he had some moments..

  19. Winona Says:

I thought Xtina on the red carpet looked like Donatella Versace from a distance – I’m just sayin’. As for the show itself – I outgrew MTV a loooong time ago, and am happy with reading recaps, looking at photos and viewing highlights online.

  20. Bethany Says:

The VMA’s get worse and worse every year, when will the glory days of it being a fun, star filled event come back?

  21. DANIEL Says:

christina always gets it right!!! love her

  22. Kendra Says:

Bethany – AMEN! It seems like it used to be such a big party with everyone turning out and tons of energy..It’s just blah now..And I would have thought for their 25th show, they would pull out some old vjs or some of their great hosts from the past..Pee-Wee anyone?? ;)

  23. Jenn Says:

I thought Britney looked GREAT!!! She deserves every bit of this…after the year she had last year, this just shows all the support she really does have especially from her fans…they are the ones who vote for her anyways!
And I liked Russell Brand I thought he did a good job and I laughed out loud at majority of his jokes! Some poeple just don’t understand it’s all for fun…

  24. Shavonne Says:

“X-tina’s new song was awesome…the outfit didn’t really do good for her figure”

What??! She looked AMAZING! Especially since she just had a kid and she is that slim already, good for her. And I really liked her performance. The superhero thing was awesome.

Lil Wayne was sooooooooo good too!!!

  25. shell Says:

it sucks that christina prefered dancing over singing. oh well.
mtv did a good job at trying to bring back britney but too much is too much.

  26. StephLorenzo Says:

Russell Brand was funny up until he started slagging off the Jonas Brothers…the youngest is 15, for God’s sake! do you want EVERYONE under the age of 20 to be pregnant like the Republican VP candidate’s daughter? I’m no prude, but the youngest is 15, a mere child!

anyway, he was incredibly rude in the fact that he trampled over Robert Pattinson’s lines before Paramore’s performance. the man came there to do a job, they asked the cast of Twilight to present a band’s performance, and it seemed like Russell wanted more camera time so he jumped in on it! WAS NOT needed at all!

all the performances were great! I was a bit shocked that Christina was lip-synching but she had a more up beat and dancey song than she usually does, so it’s more logical that she’d lip-sync just like Brit’s music. Brit deserved her awards, they may have felt bad for her, but it’s about time that somebody did. She looked wonderful, I’m so proud of her, I blasted Blackout in my car on the way to school this morning!

  27. Margie Says:

Agree or not, Britney needed these awards from MTV not only for their past trangressions but because they helped her fall from grace last year. They should have prevented that fiasco last year but they helped in her downfall. I’m not a big Brit fan but even I have to admit that those awards were long overdue.

    No Britney, No MTV.

  28. Nicole Says:

i dont know what the big deal about her lip synching. its only an mtv award show. its not like it was a concert or a benefit show. for all you know, she could have been sick or something. every artist does it atleast once.

i know she said shes a singer and would never do it. but she wanted to put on a good show (im assuming cause she hasnt done on in awhile) so she pulled out the dancing. its not easy to sing & dance.

  29. Melissa Says:

I thought they were horrible this year. I had never heard of Russell Brand, and personally thought he was the worst host in history. It seemed that all of the categories had the same 4 or 5 groups. There was no diversity in the nominees. Xtina’s performance was ok, but that outfit was very unflattering. The audience seemed very small and there were hardly any celebrities there. The awards show in general came off as unorganized, last minute & dull. Demi with no microphone? Jamie Fox not knowing when he was live? The pairing of the people introducing the awards was chaotic. Slipknot introducing Best Hip Hop video? Plus, one rock category? Not to mention the nominees (minus slipknot) were a joke. Again, no diversity.

I kept waiting for Brand to tell us it was all a joke and the real awards show would be next week.

  30. Bon Says:

Russell Brand was lame. Did not laugh once. Britney looked good.

  31. Michelle Says:

I thought Russell Brand was hilarious. I’m a new fan.

  32. LASnark.com Says:

Russell Brand saved this low-budget excuse for the VMA’s

  33. Stefan Says:

i too noticed the Lady GaGa rip off with Xtina, but it was spectacular all the same. Britney should’ve commented about her crazy year last year or made a joke. she looked good but she ran all her lines into one run-on sentence at the beginning. not sure what Rihanna is supposed to be accomplishing with the Disturbia single/video/performance but it was deffo lackluster. Brand was hilarious and clever. I am really not sure what is so great about the Jonas Brothers, but then I am over the age of 17 so maybe that works against me. Pete Wentz paired with ashlee and then later danity kane was just awkward and lame.

  34. Brandi Says:

I thought Brand was horrible. He kept interrupting the announcers and was just rude. His jokes reminded me of a hyper child trying to get attention. It wasn’t even the political jokes, although that joke resembled one that chris rock has been telling for years. I thought the theatrics of the musical performances were good, but not so much the music itself. I really did enjoy christina’s performance though, as well as britney’s wins, but over all the vma’s sucked.

  35. Jennifer Says:

Bethany & Kendra are spot on! This years VMA’s felt like it was being hosted in a high school auditorium. Lacked excitement!

  36. nat Says:

Does Xtinas new song have a Goldfrapp sound to it or am I imagining things? Not that I’m complaining, it’s something new for her…..

  37. Ali Di Says:

Christina Rocked it…P!nk was awesome, and Rihanna’s show had tons of flair (and Christina may have lip synced but she was still fabulous) all in all there were good performances this year, everyone is getting on Russell Brand’s case about his political comments, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions and has a right to say how they feel. For someone to call it treason is an EXTREME exaggeration, you don’t have to agree with the man but it’s not treason in a world of “free speach”. All in all i enjoyed the VMA’s and was so happy for Britney Spears, this could be a push (and boost of confidence) for her to do something even more fabulous on her upcoming album. Though was it just me or did the audience seem kind of dead this year? No one was standing or dancing (aside for on the back lot sets for P!nk and the Jonas Brothers).

  38. kendell Says:

ok psychopath named punisher… take that energy and use it to find urself a good therapist. im so over you being a negative nancy on everything brit brit. she deserved it. u can have ur (wrong) opinion that says she doesnt desserve it but im not going to freak out and quote PEREZ HILTION on TRENT’s page? do you even know what the point of blogging is. jeez. I didnt watch but i did get the info that britters won big and thats really all i cared to see in the show anywyas. so congrats brit… ill probably catch the rest of the show in rerun sometime this month. peace love and stfupunisher

  39. Jordan Says:

Trent I gotta disagree with you on Xtina’s red carpet dress I thought is wasn’t that great and kinda unflatering I thought Pink looked better!

  40. maggz Says:

i didnt make it past 9:30. Russel Brand fell flat- is he really supposed to be funny? britney looked amazing, good for her! all of the performances seemed oddly familiar?

as far as the political commentary, it would be far better for celebrities to keep their opinions to themselves. intelligent people who vote recognize that these individuals, in their multi million dollar mansions and 7 figure incomes, do not live in the same world the other 99.9% of us do so their thoughts and opinions on politics dont count for much and in my opinion can be potentially damaging to candidates. the lifestyles and positions of the general, working population of this country bears no resemblance to hollywood celebrities.
politics should be left out of the script when it comes to entertainment as brainless as mtv’s ‘awards’ ceremonies.

  41. BCdanielle Says:

I didn’t mind Russell Brand that much….although I cringed quite a bit over his comments on the Jonas brothers purity rings…I thought he went too far there. I LOVED that Jordin Sparks said something about it, and the look on John Legend’s face was priceless! lol.
Britney looked amazing, as did Xtina (yea, no red lipstick!), Rihanna and T.I. were great, and Lil Wayne rocked it!
    Overall….I give the awards show a B/B+ :)

  42. Andrea Says:

I am surprised that people are commenting on Christina’s attempt to try something different and update herself. Artists have to keep reinventing themselves to stay relevant. Is this not what Madonna is praised for? She did a lot more dancing in this performance then she usually does, which I thought was great. Now we all know that Christina can sing AND dance… just not at the same time, but can anyone really dance and sing at the same time without compromising the quality? No! As for her outfit, I think she looked fantastic, especially since her son is only a few months old. She is in fantastic shape and you could tell by the way she was dancing.

Although I am surprised that Britney has never won a moon man and I believe that in the past she did deserve to win, I do not believe that makes it right to give her not only one award, but THREE (!!!) for a lackluster video. Yes the song is great and I like the album, but these awards are for the music videos and I am dumbstruck that anyone sees it any differently than that. She should not have won any of these awards. Sorry Britt Britt fans.

  43. Megan Says:

We just saying, Christina sounds like a hyprocite, she dissed lip synching and then she does it herself. LOL and she sucks for originality, if i didnt see the video package at first i would of thought it was LADY GAGA

  44. Vamp Says:

The show was better when I was much younger. You know, back when MTV actually showed videos and I knew who the people actually were.

And I’m only 35 for crying out loud.

    Bring back the 90’s!

  45. jessica Says:

I thought Xtina’s performance was total crap. Thought she looked terrible, and was disappointed that she did something out of character for her. The bad lipsynching, and the choreography was hideous, and she didn’t execute it well at all. I thought it was sad, honestly- and I’ve always been a big Xtina fan.

The whole Britney thing- everyone knows they gave her those awards because they all feel sorry for her and want her to get back to where she was. MTV needs Britney for some reason.

I thought this VMAs was absolute crap. There were so many logistical problems all night- presenters not knowing where to stand, walking out without mics, not knowing when to start talking…. it was very amateur feeling. I was disappointed.

  46. yyyyyyy Says:

OK so maybe britney needed to win something but 3 is a bit too much,I loved russell brand, but i think his humor was understood by many.

THE JORDYN COMMENT ,ALTHOUGH I THINK IT WAS GREAT THAT SHE STANDS UP FOR WHAT SHE BELIEVES , I THOUGHT THAT HER COMMENT “I just wanna say, it’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut”WAS A BIT OFF,SO
TO HER PEOPLE THAT DON´T WEAR PURITY RINGS OR
HAVE SEX ARE SLUTS!!!!!!anyways i think purity rings are stupid, it doesn´t mean anything how do we really know people who wear it are actual virgins…

XTINA´S MEDLEY OF GENIE IN THE BOTTLE WAS GREAT LOVED THAT PART, I AGREE WITH SOME PEOPLE THAT SHE DID LOOK LIKE LADY GAGA AND THE SUIT SHE WAS WEARING REMINDED ME OF THE ONE BRITNEY WORE FOR THE TOXIC VIDEO..

  47. Meme Says:

I thought Mr Brand hit the nail on the head. I thought the most off color was Jordin Sparks insinuating that those who chose to have sex under 16 were sluts…..way to win over your female audience Jord.

Plus (being british and not being subjected to the Jonas Brothers before this evening) how awful is the state of music that 3 boys with questionable voices and criminal hair cuts are the most popular music in America at the moment????

  48. K$ Says:

Jonas Brothers should be commended on being genuine, kind, goal orientated, and decent young men who young people can look up to. It is hard to find that kind of role model today. When Brand was bashing them on personal choices that they have made, it made me furious.

  49. Sheri-Lee Says:

The concensus in my household was xtina’s performance was awful. I have never been a big fan but the one respect I had for the woman was that her voice is amazing and she ALWAYS sang live. My roomate loves her and was extremely disappointed with her performance. Brand was hillarious! Britney stills looks out of it and just said what they fed her to say. She needs serious mental help. A hospital stay would probably be best. Why does the industry feel the need to pressure all underaged stars to say they are virgins and they are waiting till marriage? Nice happy thought but is it really realistic. Jordin Sparks needs to be introduced to the real world. People that have sex before marriage are not sluts.

  50. PC Says:

Christina’s performance was sooo Britney 5 years ago. Even the outfit was almost identical to Britney’s on the Onyx Hotel Tour. Hilarious.

The Russell guy was utter genius, too.

  51. Prieta Linda Says:

Ok…I have to be honest. For a 25th anniversary…this was by far the least entertaining VMA’s. The crowd was tough…it appeared that the crowd was bored…there were no hijinx or anything to really remember about this year’s VMA’s. I loved Russell Brand…I thought he was spot on with the political commentary. There were some pretty good performances but nothing that, for me, would be added to the Vault of great performances you’d expect at the VMA’s!

  52. Kendra Says:

Yah for Brit-Brit!!! Xtina was awesome as always! For all the Xtina haters out there, how is her transformation in music any different then what Madonna has done? Why should she be limited to the type of music she performs when she obviously is talented enough to pull off more than just pop music. I loved Brand, couldn’t get enough of him! Jordin Sparks needed to chill out, she took that too far about the JB. Aren’t the hosts supposed to be funny and pick on the guests? I’m just sayin…..

  53. sawwaa! Says:

Can you believe Xtina is a mother?!!?
When I saw the performance last night I just about died. Woman looks unreal for someone who just gave birth a while ago. And while I don’t like lip-syncing, period, I think Xtina did a great job.. it was fun it was fresh it was sexy and can I say, even though people talk about how she copied Lady GaGa or whoever, I’m saying.. come on. If we started that debate, then everyone copies everyone, yeah? Rihanna copying some of the outfits of her tour from Xtina, Lady GaGa’s hair from Gwen’s Sweet Escape phase.. this is the entertainment business, it will be recycled, so chill y’all!

But I agree. Britney looked amazing. I’m so happy for her, deserving of the awards or not!

And can I just say… I totally agree with Kendra. Jordin needs to chill a bit, it’s just a dig to hype things up. Russell is mad awesome!

  54. missy Says:

O man. Rihanna.. If I turned off the sound, the performance was awesome. She looked totally edgy, and sexy in her angry way. But when you turn the sound back on, Jesus Lord. Grrl can’t sing for nuts.
And please don’t tell me you don’t agree with me. You know your ears hurt too. She shud have done what Christina did. Stick to dancing, don’t sing and sound like a git.
    Brand is fuckin’ genius!!!!

  55. M Says:

Christina is different than Madonna because Christina is NOT Madonna – not even close. Madonna reinvents herself but she set the gold standard first and then changed it up. Christina on the other hand has been all over the place since the beginning. Is she a pop star or a serious singer? Is she chaste or trashy? It comes off as desperate while Madonna has always been the ultimate empowered trendsetter. People know Christina best for her singing – that won’t ever change, so in my opinion, it’s in her best interest to stick with what works. She was the one who always said she and Britney were so different – so why rip off Britney’s whole shtick circa 4 years ago?? Also just for the record, Madonna is someone who can sing AND dance her ass off – that’s what makes her a superstar!

ok i have to admit that i was a surprised that christina didn’t sing live but i think she compensated with the great performance quality of the performance and the large amount of dancing i have ever seen her do…also there may be many valid reasons why she didn’t sing live…just give the sweet thing a damn break…i absolutely loved the new version of genie…it sounded mysterious and sexy…it left me wanting to hear more…the new song is starting to grow on me and once again her look looks great…the hair works well for her… one thing that bothers me is the constant comparisons people make when it comes to anything anybody does that seems similar to what someone else has done…i do see several similarities of the outifit chris wore with the one britney wore in the toxic video and the whole britney-like elements of christina’s performance but i don’t believe that chris did it to intentionally to imitate brit. its her own rendition of something that is quite similar to that of brit…but i feel that there is no need to dis chris and just constantly point out comparisons and say who does what better…its obvious that people aren’t done making chris and brit rivals…and as far as the lipsynching…chris might have done it this one time but im sure that wen she does sing it live, she’ll tear that shit up and own it!!!!!!

I think Britney got a sympathy award.
Pieces of Me was not deserving of video of the year. it’s an awesome song but the video was lackluster.
it looked great for mtv to announce Britney’s back! because it looks good for her and MTV.
I dont like the argument that it’s been overdue because supposedly the award is for the video at hand, not paying for last year for a career at large. Other than Toxic and Baby One More Time I can’t think of many memorable videos of hers.
But then what am I saying, as if these were the Oscars.
    Whatever, i’m happy for her.

Britney didn’t deserve 3, let alone even 1 award. Truly a pity award which is idiotic….I think these MTV award shows have really been going downhill. It’s stupid to see a so-so song win that many times and then other actual huge hits not even be nominated. To not have RIhanna or Kanye or Miley (trust me, I am not too big a fan of her either but she admitedly had a big hit on her hands with that See You Again song) nominated for 0-1 items is ridiculous.

Kanye did amazing AS USUAL and as talented as he is, if I were him, I wouldn’t give the VMAs the time of my day between last year’s poor setup for his performance and MTV’s incredible overlooking of one of the most talented guys in the game. TALENT…….unlike someone who got 3 sympathy awards last night.. MTV prob just paid him big bucks to do the performance because he is too good for MTV’s treatment on my opinion.

Christina ROCKED it as usual – she is so good at what she does! I loved the way Genie in a Bottle sounded. 100000x the talent of Britney but because she is way less of a trainwreck, way too many eyes remain focused on Britney. Oh the INJUSTICE……

I only have 1 word for X-tina’s performance: HIPS!!!!
I know, I know, she just had a baby. So don’t squeeze all that “baby fat” into shiny spandex leggings!!
Otherwise I think that her new transition is fine. It’s part of the artistic process. Picasso didn’t stick to just his Blue period or his Rose. He branched out and tried new things i.e a little movement called “cubism”.
Besides oo one says a damn thing about Maddona’s biannual makeovers. And X-Tina can actually sing.

Overall everything was pretty good, I thought.
It wasn’t the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen but it was okay :D
