Christian Siriano’s First Official Fashion Week Show
Spring 2009

Project Runway season 4 winner Christian Siriano presented his first official fashion show at New York Fashion Week last night. You may recall that Christian won his season of Project Runway back in February of this year so this was the first New York Fashion Week since his win … and he has already presented his first, solo collection — not bad for a kid, I think. Here are a few pieces from his show:

It’s always nice to attend a show where the audience is clearly filled with fans. They break into spontaneous applause when they like what they see and you can actually feel a difference in the crowd’s energy. Christian Siriano has a lot of fans, Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, Becki Newton and several of the “Project Runway” executive producers among them. And his first runway collection played to them. For his first real collection, Siriano showed more refined versions of that final collection that won him the “Project Runway” top prize. There were ultra-skinny pants and poufy tops, some even shown with a giant picture hat, all in gray. He stretched himself with some of the skirts in his black group. There was a really well-cut peg shirt (read mini culottes), a high-waisted paperbag pleated skirt and even a ballerina skirt. Of course, he threw in his signature circle shirts and gowns in which circles of chiffon in varying sizes are embroidered for volume, all of which received spontaneous bits of applause.

There is no question that Christian is an insanely talented designer. I really loved all the pieces that he showed in this, his first fashion show. You can really see his trademark design style in the pieces … as well as his love of very large hats. I’m glad to see there was quite a bit of bold color mixed in as well, I love black but too much black is not very inventive. After the jump, check out a few pics of Christian taking his bows at yesterday’s fashion show and of him at his afterparty last night …

Yes, that Christian with Josh Madden and Mat Devine of Kill Hannah (the official afterparty was held at Highbar). He looks really pleased with himself, as well he should. Technically, this was his second fashion show in a singular year … a pretty amazing feat for any designer. Naturally, there will be those folks with the negative, hateful comments but I really do like Christian‘s design aesthetic … and I find that he is much more appealing now that we aren’t subjected to his catch-phrasiness on a weekly basis ;) So … the collection … what do y’all think?

He’s the only Project Runway winner that has really made a splash in the fashion world. I knew from the very 1st episode I saw him in that he would be the winner and boy I was right! Sure he’s a bit quirky and can come across a bit cocky at times but I think he deserves every bit of success that comes his way because he has an enormous talent and he deserves to be proud (unlike Kenley this season…boy she is REALLyY starting to tick me off with her defensiveness). I foresee him becoming a big fashion name in the coming years…good for him!!

  8. Sarah says:

he’s such a beast/prodigy/rockstar…i love christian…this collection is beautiful, so above and beyond, and i love to see all the colors that he’s included. i think that the yellow dress is a little excessive-use-of-fabric…he makes such a great silhouette so i prefer his more structured pieces. the orange mini-dress is a show-stopper though!! i looooove his use of gray… i could go on and on and on.

he’s a stone fox! go christian! [trent, you're pretty fierce yourself, for sure]

  12. willie says:

why are you commenting on fashion, have you seen how you dress?
