Britney Spears Wins BIG At The 2008 MTV VMAs
OMG OMG OMG OMG … seriously, that was pretty much all I could muster last night as Britney Spears won her first ever award, Best Female Video, at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards last night. I was so fortunate to be on hand to actually watch our dear Britney not only win her first MTV VMA but two more VMAs thruout the night. After her Best Female win, she went on to win Best Pop Video and the biggest award of the night Video of the Year. I will do a proper VMAs recap post but this one is all about my girl, Britney Spears.
To get the night started off right, Brit Brit took to the stage in a beautiful sparkly silver dress and with her shy and coy manner wished the VMAs a Happy 25th Birthday and officially kicked off the night’s festivities … then she she just sat back with her steadfast manager Larry Rudolph at her side and collected awards at regular intervals thruout the night — which were all absolutely well-deserved:
It was Britney’s night! The pop star made a triumphant return to MTV’s Video Music Awards, winning three Moonmen, including the night’s big honor, video of the year, for her hit “Piece of Me.” “I’m in shock,” the grateful singer said after accepting her third award of the night from NBA star Kobe Bryant. Spears, of course, was the subject of much speculation and excitement after word spread that she would be opening the ceremony. She looked a little nervous at first, but proved to be in fighting form in a vintage silver Versace minidress. After being escorted from her dressing room, Spears took center stage, clutched the microphone tightly and announced, “I’m here tonight to celebrate a very important birthday.” Continued Spears: “This is the 25th Video Music Awards – and it starts right now.” … Moments later, Spears was back to accept her first VMA ever. Nominated for 16 Moonmen in the past, the pop star nabbed the first award of the night, best female video, for her song “Piece of Me.” Spears gave a brief speech, thanking God for “just blessing me like this,” calling out her two sons and dedicating the award to her fans. “This is for you,” she said … Spears later picked up her second award for best pop video, also for “Piece of Me.” “I’m speechless,” she chiped as she offered thanks to manager Larry Rudolph, who accompanied her to the show, and her fans.
And then, of course, she took home the last and biggest award of the night, Video of the Year. It really was Britney’s night. Absolutely everyone was talking about her from beginning to end. I just find it so remarkable how much everybody loves her … even the haters can’t stop talking about her. She was absolutely triumphant last night and it was a beautiful sight to behold. Of all the years that Britney Spears has been nominated for MTV VMAs and after all the amazing, landmark performances she has turned in for the awards show … last night was Britney’s first night on the winning end of the VMAs. In my estimation, she won the night’s top awards and did so with style and cute grace, a far cry from the sad days when Britney had hit rock bottom. I thought it was very fitting of Britney to thank and dedicate her awards to her fans. She has so many loyal admirers, I’m glad she realizes how much she is loved. I was in the VIP green room for the duration of the show and was standing near Wayne Isham, the famed video director who also directed Piece of Me and he looked very pleased that his video had won so many awards but I heard him explain to his friends how proud he was of Britney that she was finally honored for her accomplishments. Additionally, I’m pretty sure that Larry Rudolph, Britney’s long-time on-again-off-again manager was pretty proud himself, he was beaming from ear to ear all night long:
And, just for fun … well, first let me preface this next bit by saying … hand’s down, Xtina Aguilera gave the best performance of the VMAs this year. I found her look sexy and I really loved the new song Keeps Gettin’ Better (which we got to hear first HERE) she performed as well as the remixed version of Genie in a Bottle … brills! The new song has deffo grown on me :) BUT, I couldn’t help but feel that I had seen Xtina’s outfit before … on someone else … thankfully, BreatheHeavy.com reminded me where I had seen that outfit before:
Hee hee … it’s okay, Xtina — let’s consider it an homage … we all love Britney Spears, too! Honestly, the Britney faithful were out in force last night. As I said, everyone was talking about her before the show and all night after the show in celebration of her wins. As soon as Brit won her first award, I started getting emails from Pink readers in jubilation … it was such a great night for her. I’m thrilled that this is where her life is again … back on top, where she belongs. Hopefully, the best is yet to come!

Me and my dorm floor cheered each time Britney won! One of our floormates came in, and said he hates her, and we all flipped on him! Hahaha! It was great!
While Christina did give a great performance, and looked great, Britney Spears definitely looks 100 times better in that cat suit. AND SHE LOOKED AMAAAAZING LAST NIGHT!

I am so happy for our girl, she has made MTV A LOT of money over the years and was pretty badly exploited by them last year so this night seemed like more than just a comeback and well-deserved praise for that, it was almost like an apology too. It’s a win-win for everyone when Britney is doing well in my opinion. I also agree that Christina was channeling Britney, which I found so strange. I honestly thought she was doing an homage or something because it was SO Britney. Oh well – I guess she decided if you can’t beat her, join her – ha ha! I love that Britney kept getting standing ovations – you can’t help but root for this girl. Go Britney! Welcome back!!

Christina’s performance wasn’t that great…i mean, come on, that girl has got some MAJOR pipes, and she lip synches?!? i think that SINGERS should sing, and DANCERS should dance – the singing shouldn’t be compromised so the singer can dance, ya know??
Rihanna killed it. She may not be as technically skilled as Christina, but for 2 VMA’s now, she actually sang live. That deserves wayyy more props, in my book.

I thought the actual show was really disjointed and didn’t run very smoothly..It didn’t seem like there was much energy in the room, either, but maybe it just didn’t come across on tv..BUT, Brit looked amazing! Xtina’s performance was fantastic..I also really liked Pink and thought she looked awesome during her performance..The rest..Eh..Seeing how it was the 25th anniversary, I expected so much more..And much bigger names..And I really could have gone without Russell spending the first few minutes talking up Obama..It just wasn’t the place for it..Ahh well..I hope you have tons of good pics, Trent!

I didn’t start liking Brit until she became damaged. I can’t say these awards were deserved for her recent efforts, so I’d like to think that not only was she given the awards for her ongoing contributions over the years… but also as a bit of a boost for her confidence and comeback. In an industry that is cruel, I want to believe they did something nice for someone who has proven in the last year or so just how human she is.

Britney was amazing last night. Her skit with Jonah was so naturally funny, reminding us of the old goofy Britney.
Some poeple say she doesn’t deserve to win… but guess why Britney kept thanking her fans??? Because its her fans that MADE HER WIN the awards, not MTV. Who else can come out with an album while hitting rock bottom, with absolutely ZERO promotion and yet produce her BEST album ever?
What Britney has that no other artists have is her amazing fans who trully showed dedication when everyone else was giving up on her. And Britney has the natural CHARISMA. One other thing that only very few artists have.
She’s taking baby steps, people. Take it easy on her. She deserves to win. Congratulations to our girl, Britney!

A few things:
1 – XTINA is my girl and I loved her performance! But she NEVER lip synchs…so to see her do that just made my heart a little sad. BUT…no worries cuz she tears it up anyway.
2 – I’ve NEVER been a fan of Britney, nor will I ever, but I must say that I was routing for her to come back and I was thrilled with her last night. Her weave actually looked nice instead of the garbage we are used to seeing. She looked great! Good job Britters.
3 – PINK ROCKED THE HOUSE. Not to mentioned she looked gorgeous.

I’ve not seen a lot of videos this year, but I did see Piece of Me. I didn’t think it was that awesome either. If it truly deserved to win those three awards then the rest of the videos this year must have been utter shit.
If I were her, I’d rather win awards after a truly great year of touring.. of singing on shows.. promoting herself. Not what she’s done this year. Seems heavily biased and fixed in some ways.

I’m really happy Britney won because I love that girl. I personally prefer Britney’s music to anyone else who was nominated. In fact, I don’t listen to the others at all. So, I feel she deserved the awards.
That being said, Britney has done better work and the awards went to someone else those years. As others have pointed out, what Perez Hilton said doesn’t help matters. All things considered it does feel rather like it was a ploy to reward her for getting her life back together and to once again, jump start her career.
You know what though? I don’t care. :p

Britney looked simply wonderful last night! However, like everyone is saying, the whole scene last night seemed forced – on everyone’s parts. MTV was blantantly apologizing for biting the hand that fed them millions upon millions over the past decade. Britney also seemed spoon fed her award speeches by Larry. I was hoping she would acknowledge some of the drama over the last couple of years or at least give us something meaningful. Instead – while staring into Larry’s eyes – she told us she loves God, her children and her fans – and was outta there in like 30 secs. Anyway, I guess it was better than she kept it simple to avoid any further media persecution.

Ever since MTV has basically stopped playing videos (with the exception of TRL and late night/wee hours of the morning stuff) I think that it is hard to take this show seriously. I watch a good amount of MTV but I can’t remember the last time I saw a video from start to finish. So these days I look at the VMAs more as a celebration of music rather than an “awards show” per se, because the awards seem to play second fiddle to the performances/appearances. It was great to see Britney there looking swell, and just icing on the cake that she won some awards.

Voters must have felt sorry for Britney and her tumultuous last year because “Piece of Me” is a mediocre video at best and did not deserve “Video of the Year.” I’m not a Britney hater by any means, I just don’t think she deserved to win. And all these calls of her being back on top, well that’s yet to be determined. “Blackout” was a personal & professional failure for her (i.e. rushed piece of garbage).

I can see how she won the other ones, but I just feel like the voters, voted for her because of what she went through. It doesn’t help that Perez Hilton directly confirmed that on the post-show. I dont think that she really deserved those 3 awards either and i think it probably was fixed, but its MTV that runs the show not us. I also dont aggree with the fact that she is giving up her kids to fix her “career”, i understand that the children were an added stress but then she shouldnt have had them. She needs to fix her problems that she has mentally and then the problems with k-fed and the kids and then her career. I think this is a little too much to soon. Dont get me wrong i am happy that she is becomming old britney but she has to think about her mental status before rushing into things like touring etc. She also need s to think about her children and although she relinquished custody to K-fed that doesnt mean she is not a parent. On the other hand it was nice to see the bubbly britney we all knew. Now lets hope she can hold it all together.

I have to agree with half the posts here. I’m a big britney fan, so did get me wrong, she looked amazing, but for her to win those awards for Piece of Me? Serious Piece of Me? I think the awards were more of a, “We’re so glad you didn’t kill yourself or your babies” awards. And a groveling on MTV’s part for making her perform last year. She’s had way way better videos in the past. But Piece being video of the year? I don’t even think I saw it on mtv once. Shady.

Look at the standing ovation when she opens the show. It doesnt matters if she wins or not in the first place. She alr win at the whole show right from the start she walk out of her dressing room.
Its not abt if she tour or promote for her to get these video awards. YEs, it wasnt the best video from her but it still gets SO MUCH more attention than those who actually promotes their own video like crazy.
And stop talking abt her sons. What does Kevin want now? He wants to send the kids to go on television and film auditions. And his reason for that? the kids loves to dance and sing in the house. Tell u, LOTSA OF KIDS love to do that but do all their parent send them for TV auditions?
Britney doesnt wan tt to happen because she has been in the business since she was young and she knows exactly what is happening. She just wan her kids to live like normal kids.
When kevin had the kids with him, Britney went for a drink or shopping and ppl says britney doesnt wan her kids. How abt when Britney was having the kids? He went around partying like crazy but no one talks abt him?
When Kevin have the kids, all u see is the bodyguard or nanny bringing the kids out for a walk or gym. Anyone sees Kevin? But when Britney have the kids, she stays @ home with them and even brought them out for a walk or a swim.(remember the kids even play with Kingston[gwen stefani's son] when britney have the kids)
NOW TELL ME WHO IS GOOD TO THE KIDS?!

Actually, Piece Of Me (including the video) was one of her most successful songs to date.
Considering she did next to no promotion for it… that’s not a half bad thing. Blackout has so far been her most critically acclaimed album.
You don’t have to like Britney, but to say that the song/video didn’t deserve to win any awards is just ignorant.
And let’s not forget that the highest honor of the night (Video of the year) is voted on by the general public, so obviously the viewers thought she deserved to win.

Piece of Me was not a good enough video to win video of the year, and that is the truth. No matter what Britney Spears has been through somebody else got robbed out of Video of the Year. If MTV wanted to give Britney a sympathy award, they should have given her a Appreciation Award or something like that. Britney was a good performer, but she is far from being at her best. She’s looking better, but she still needs some work. Sure Britney Spears could use the confidence boost, but giving her the Video of the Year? That makes the Video Music Awards a pathetic award show. The song itself is a little catchy, but the video was far from the best this year. Unless every video this year really sucked. MTV doesn’t even play Music Videos on there main channel anymore.
They need to stop the VMA’s and have a MTV Fake Reality Show Awards (FRSA’s), because that is all they play on MTV these days. Remember back in the days when you would watch MTV you would actually be able to watch and listen to Music Videos. Now they might show a 15 second clip of the same video in between Reality Shows.
I do hope these Sympathy Awards to Britney does boost her confidence, because Britney Spears used to be way hot and talented. She is looking better, but we all know that she can look and perform a lot better, and hopefully with this confidence boost we will see Britney Spears the beautiful, talented, hot, sexy, singer and entertainer that we know she can be.

Nerdster… you do realize that Video Of The Year is a category that is voted on by the general public in a poll at MTV.com, right?
MTV didn’t give her a sympathy award… the voters decided that they thought Piece of Me was the video that deserved to win. MTV had nothing to do with it.

Britney winning brought me to tears. Very well-deserved, she’s been working hard and I’m so proud she’s getting her life together once again. She doesn’t need anybody to make her happy.

i thought the same thing too when i saw that outfit on xtina, i was like “that looks like almost the same thing that britney wore for her toxic video and the vmas!” ha. for some reason i knew u were gonna say something about it. oh hell, i already knew u were gonna say a ton about britney, cuz thats ur girl. =]

YAY FOR BRITNEY! I cheered every time she won.
Christina’s performance was iffy.
Lipsynching was obvious. But you didn’t hear anyone bashing her for her weight, did ya? They should have. look at her hips. They were gross; her outfit selection should have been better thought out. The camera adds 10 lbs, well those 10 lbs are all on her hips. I think britney looked better last year than christina did this year, they both had bad outit choices for performances.
