Eva Mendes Gets Controversial In Calvin Klein

Double O - La La
Friday, September 19th, 2008

Eva Mendes is featured in the new issue of Elle magazine posing sexily in the new Fall fashions by Calvin Klein. In the accompanying interview, Eva talks about her controversial CK television commercial that got pulled from the air by TV network censors as the article focuses on controversial fashion advertising overall … check out the hawt photos:

Is Eva Mendes the sexiest woman in Hollywood? Network censors may have pondered that very question earlier this year, when they ruled that 30 seconds of grainy, home-movie-ish footage of the actress wearing little more than a smudge of black eyeliner in a commercial for Calvin Klein’s new eau, Secret Obsession, was too hot for TV. (Not to worry. Mendes—albeit slightly less of her—will still be steaming up your flat screen this fall.) The original “isn’t shocking at all,” says Mendes, whose Sophia Loren contours will also, around the same time, be featured in ads for a new Calvin Klein Underwear line for curvier women called Seductive Comfort. “But it does have a really intimate quality that makes people nervous.” In other words, it’s typical Calvin Klein … The Mendes episode may be relatively minor as CK kerfuffles go (so far, at least), but it serves to remind us of what the company’s marketers happily call “the halo effect” of controversy. The phenomenon dates back to Brooke Shields declaring her indivisibility from her Calvins, then continued with the early-’90s Obsession ads of Kate Moss draped naked across a couch or staring soulfully into the camera, one barely postpubescent breast covered and the other entirely revealed, and Mark Wahlberg’s firm grasp on his Calvin-clad crotch, stretched high above Times Square.

Okay, so I’ve seen this controversial Secret Obsession television commercial and I can understand why it was banned … had it not been for the exposed nipple shot, I think the commercial would’ve been fine for the airwaves. This country is still not ready to expose women’s breasts on TV. After the jump, check out the Calvin Klein Secret Obsession commercial starring Eva Mendes in all her NSFW glory …

The City Of Detroit Swears In A New Mayor

Ken Cockrel, Jr. says 'this is our time for hope and renewal'
Friday, September 19th, 2008

Ken Cockrel, Jr. has been sworn in as the new mayor of Detroit, MI today as the city tries to move forward and heal the destructive shame brought about by the criminal actions of former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. After being sworn in as the city’s new mayor, Cockrel asked for hope and patience as he works to move the City of Detroit towards a more positive and productive future. Here are a couple pics of Cockrel’s swearing in ceremony at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building in Detroit, MI this morning:

Newly sworn-in Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. declared this morning after taking the oath of office that “this is our time for hope and renewal” after eight months of scandal that forced out former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. “From this moment on, the past is the past and we as a community, as a city, and as a region are moving forward,” he said. Some of the topics Cockrel addressed in the speech were Cobo Center expansion, mass transit for the region, cleanliness of the city and an environmentally friendly agenda. He also said he would fix the city’s troubled financial books. And he had a message for criminals in the city while promising to fight crime with the spirit of his late father, Kenneth Cockrel Sr., whose activist work led to the abolition of the STRESS police unit that was infamous for shooting black men. “To those of you out there who are bad actors, to those of you who are stealing gutters, air-conditioning units, and wires from our citizens and businesses, to those of you who are terrorizing our senior citizens,” he said. “We are coming after you. And we will get you.” The new mayor said he looked forward to working with new Council President Monica Conyers and the council to achieve the city’s needs. And he promised “full cooperation” with authorities in the continuing investigations of City Hall. There is a federal probe into city contracting, and it snared Cockrel’s former chief of staff who was caught on surveillance video accepting cash. Cockrel was greeted by a thunderous standing ovation from a jammed City Council auditorium that was standing-room only … Cockrel, an avid movie and television fan, confessed “I’m a geek” and quoted the famous line from “Star Trek”: “to boldly go where no one has gone before.” “I believe this is relevant because no one has ever had to assume the office of mayor under circumstances like this,” he said.

Surely the City of Detroit can benefit from the leadership of this avid Trekkie, right? I keed, I keed … this is actually the most hopeful development to happen in the City of Detroit in a very long time. Now that Kwame has been sentenced to jail and there is no hope that he can ever get his grubby hands on the governance of Detroit ever again, I am really looking forward to a better and brighter future for Detroit. I realize that Cockrel is not taking on an easy task of governing the city but I am confident that he will be able to undo some of the damage that Kwame has brought to the city.

‘Sex And The City’ The Movie Premieres On DVD

The gang's all here ... well, except for Charlotte
Friday, September 19th, 2008

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and others (except for Kristin Davis) were all on hand at the New York Public Library for the Sex and the City: The Movie DVD Launch Party here in NYC last night. Here are a few pics from the event’s pink carpet arrivals:

It’s curious that Kristin Davis would skip out on an event like this … she happily signed on to make the promo rounds for the SaTC Movie release in May and even hosted, with only director Michael Patrick King, the “LA Premiere” of the movie (which I was lucky enough to attend). Could there be behind the scenes turmoil running amok amongst the SaTC ladies again? Generally, I’m a fan of SJP’s red carpet looks (I didn’t even mind that ridiculous hat she wore to the UK premiere of the SaTC Movie) but I’m not a fan of the obvs Audrey Hepburn rip-off. I’m actually surprised she didn’t walk around with a really long cigarette holder to go with the outfit … originality, please.

Katie Holmes Debuts On Broadway In ‘All My Sons’

Encore! Encore!
Friday, September 19th, 2008

Katie Holmes made her Broadway debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre here in NYC as the Arthur Miller play she is starring in, All My Sons, opened in previews last night. Pink reader Liz was in the hiz last night for Katie’s debut and offers a very positive review of her performance … here are a few pics of Katie on stage last night:

Liz writes: Just got home from the premier of All My Sons, and I was thoroughly impressed. First of all, John Lithgow blew me away, and Dianne Wiest was outstanding. Patrick Wilson was totally in his element on stage, of course. And Katie Holmes actually really amazed me. It’s not easy to keep up with thespians of this caliber, and she totally held her own. Also, the staging is really minimal, so the actors really had nothing to rely on but their chops. The play’s content is really fascinating, giving them great material, and they all did a fantastic job of bringing it to life. Now on to the gossip … As expected, there was a large Scientology protest outside the theatre beforehand, blah blah blah … Tommy Boy was there, sitting exactly four rows in front of me. He was very congenial and took pictures with a few people, and the audience erupted in applause as soon as he came in to take his seat. The performance went smoothly after the initial ooh’s and ahh’s and everyone respected his privacy. Dustin Hoffman was also there, and spoke with Tom for a bit. As soon as people realized he was in the house as well, he also got a round of applause and a few camera flashes. Katie definitely was looking at Tom during their curtain calls. It was pretty cute, actually. She seemed to be kind of shy about it,and just really hoping she got approval from the audience, which she most certainly did. All in all, a great show, true Arthur Miller style, and worth it to see!

Nice! I’m glad to hear from a real person that Katie was able to hold her on stage with the other very talented players. After the jump, check out couple pics of Tom Cruise’s arrival at the theater last night, hear what he had to say about his wife’s performance and check out a couple pics of those Scientology protesters that Liz mentioned above …

Audrina Patridge Moves Out

Is she gettin' her own TV show?
Friday, September 19th, 2008

In Touch Weekly was the first to report last night that Audrina Patridge has packed her bags and has moved out of the house that she shared with BFF Lauren LC Conrad and Lauren Lo Bosworth … and the MTV Cameras were there to capture all of the tearful (and staged?) goodbyes (sure to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Hills). You will note that Lo was happy to help carry boxes in order to make Audrina’s move as successful and quick as possible … what a pal. Here are pics from yesterday’s dramatic excitement:

In Touch can exclusively reveal that the Hills girls are about to become even more distant from one another-literally! “Yes I am moving out,” Audrina Patridge confirms to In Touch as she began moving belongings from the house she shares with Lauren Conrad and Lo Bosworth in LA. Audrina and Lauren fell out only weeks after they started living together with LC’s childhood pal Lo.

TMZ also reported on Audrina’s move but about an hour after In Touch did … to their credit, tho, they did manage to offer a new bit of unsubstantiated info:

“The Hills” ain’t big enough for Audrina Patridge anymore. Sources close to Audrina tell TMZ a spin-off show starring Audrina is “in the works.” And it’s all happening fast — moving trucks are in front of the house she shares with Lauren Conrad and Lauren Bosworth right now. MTV released this statement: “MTV has no plans for a spin-off with Audrina.

I’m not entirely sure that I believe that Audrina will get her own spin-off show … especially since Whitney’s spin-off show has yet to air and we have no idea if it’s gonna sink or swim. If anything, I can see Audrina leaving the show altogether to try and make her own way in the world … away from LC’s coattails. Actually, I heard rumblings about Audrina’s defection from the house at the 2008 MTV VMAs Official Afterparty but I kinda forgot about it until this news broke last night. In any event, wherever the road takes you, Audrina, I wish you much happiness and luck … and I’m sure that Lo will always be there to offer a helping hand if ever you feel the need to move even further away from The Hills.

Pat O’Brien Is Really Fired This Time

See ya, pal!
Friday, September 19th, 2008

It sounds like the folks at The Insider have finally had enough of Pat O’Brien’s crazy shenanigans. The New York Post is reporting that Pat got fired yesterday, for real this time, after homie fired off some insulting and boastful emails to his co-workers. This incident IMHO isn’t as embarrassing as that voicemail incident that O’Brien got embroiled in a couple of years ago but it looks like The Insider is fed up … he’s dunzo, y’all:

PAT O’Brien is out of a job. The former host of “The Insider,” who was demoted to a correspondent after several stints in rehab, infuriated his bosses when he sent out an ill-advised e-mail Monday to his “Insider” and “Entertainment Tonight” co-workers, which boasted of his own popularity. The e-mail also said one of “Insider” host Lara Spencer’s segments on the show makes viewers “want to vomit.” Sources told us O’Brien was fired yesterday, and a rep for “The Insider” confirmed he’s out.

Yeah, Pat O’Brien sounds like a total mess. You’d think he’d have learned his lesson after his previous public shame and supposed rehabilitation in rehab but … I guess not. It sounds a bit fishy that he would not get fired over the voicemail incident but does get fired after sening off “ill-advised” boastful emails — so I suspect there’s more to the story. In any event, Pat O’Brien is looking for work these days … as any of y’all hiring?
