Georgie, what makes you say it’s an American thing? Some native English speakers insist on pluralizing things that aren’t plural, but it’s hardly an American problem. Also, I don’t care how mind-blowing the London ceremonies (both of them) are, because at least people won’t be forced to wear adult diapers so they can rehearse for 51 hours straight, and also, I doubt the English will let anyone DIE. So there’s that.

Maybe I’m being pedantic but why do so many Americans refer to the Opening Ceremonies and Closing Ceremonies? It’s Closing Ceremony, singular, not Ceremonies plural.

Maybe the IOC will get their head out of their rears for the 2012 Olympics and not call out athletes for “showboating” after their wins while ignoring the fact that the host country didn’t do any of the things that they promised in order to get the 2008 Olympics.

the closing ceremony was pretty short.
but china and beijing certainly did a splendid job.

I am SO looking forward to the games coming here in 2012. I really want to be at the opening ceremony, whatever it costs. However…I thought the ‘Hey you’re giving us the olympics now, here is our skit’ was rather.. embarassing. A red bus? A zebra crossing? David Beckham? That’s NOT what our country is about. Sure, it’s LONDON 2012, but not all events are in London. Great Britain is hosting, and that was *not* Great Britain. We have so much history and they focused on a boring London bus… and a football player who doesn’t even live here anymore. Boo. Brits watching that should’ve felt proud for the future, but instead I thought they were mocking us, or amping up the view that other countries have of us. I’m surprised they didn’t play ‘bowls’ on the ‘lawn’ and have tea and crumpets.
