Ricky Martin Fathers A Set Of Twins

Livin' La Vida In Vitro
August 21st, 2008

Ricky Martin just can’t let a big celeb trend pass him by, let alone two celeb trends … Martin has just revealed that not only is he a new celebrity parent but he is the celebrity parent of twin babies that were born by way of a surrogate mother. Like Clay Aiken before him (who fathered his own child after deciding to have a baby via artificial insemination with his much older friend Jaymes Foster), Ricky is now a new dad of twin baby boys:

Ricky Martin has become a father. The Latin heartthrob welcomed twin boys via a surrogate, his rep confirmed to Access Hollywood. “The children, delivered via gestational surrogacy, are healthy and already under Ricky’s full-time care,” a statement from Martin’s rep read. Martin is thrilled about the births and is stepping back from his duties as a bon-bon shaking celebrity to be a dad. “Ricky is elated to begin this new chapter in his life as a parent and will be spending the remainder of the year out of the public spotlight in order to spend time with his children,” the statement also noted. Martin is not expected to return to the studio until sometime next year, his rep told Access.

Well, now this is … odd … but happy news, I suppose. I seem to remember hearing that Ricky (who has been out of the spotlight for ages now, at least here in the US) had a girlfriend or was purporting to have a girlfriend/fiancée or something like that … yeah, whatever happened to her and why did he decide to have a child via surrogate. I suppose I can understand that he may have wanted to have children without the bother of having their natural mother to contend with in order to raise them on his own but … yeah, it’s odd, right? Surely this news will do nothing to cool down those rumors about his private life. In any event, congratulations goes out to Daddy Martin on the birth of his twin boys … I wish them all much happiness together.

That’s because he’s gay. When I stayed at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town he was there with his boyfriend. I saw them, and the driver who took us to the airport told us that Ricky and his boyfriend often stay there under his boyfriend’s name. But South Africa is pretty chilled about celebrities anyway. We don’t really go that crazy for them, that’s probably why they’re vacay here a lot.

That pic of him is awful and yet I can’t stop looking. I feel dirty now.

  4. Betch Says:

He hasn’t been out of the spotlight for years….. Just because he hasn’t been very famous in the US doesn’t mean he’s not famous everywhere else! He had a very succesful MTV Unplugged album in 2007 that was hugely succesful in latin america! I went to his mexico city concert, 20,00 seat arena SOLD OUT.
    I’m done with my ranting

  5. Mookalakkaheekee Says:

He’s going to be Living La Vida of sleepless nights with twins around! Best wishes to the new dad.

  6. Nic Says:

I have been a bit disappointed in the coverage of Clay Aiken’s as well as Ricky Martin’s new fatherhood. While it is considered “odd” or “weird” in our society for these men to father children out of “traditional” family structures (aka married straight mom and dad), I feel it is important to reserve judgment and embrace the fact that in our society there is no one definition of “family.”

  7. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

For the record, my opinion of the “oddness” of these two men becoming fathers has nothing to do with the untraditional nature of their new families … it’s more that I find both Clay and Ricky odd overall.

  8. Lissa Says:

Ricky has always seemed very nice and a good person He has always said he wanted children. I think he will be a great dad. I am happy for him.

  9. CkayM Says:

I thought he was gay……… Am I missing something here? There were pictures of him on a beach with a guy and they were hugging or something. Yes?

  10. La Diabla Says:

Ricky’s a man. He cannot give birth himself. Therefore, any child he brings into the world will be via a surrogate, right?

  11. Skippydoo2008 Says:

Yeah… More odd men procreating :) I luv it!!!

Who cares who’s straight or gay. You’re missing the big picture here… Again Clay and Ricky are both very odd. Why do women want to have children with these odd men??? That’s the question I have……

  12. Richard S Says:

Bitches get pregnant every minute of every day, why is it such a surprise for a bitch like RM to do it. He’s a bit lesbionic for a gay guy. Not being judgemental he said…..

  13. JeniLee Says:

I agree with you guys who are saying how odd Ricky and Clay are haha. They are very odd.

And now Ricky has TWO babies to take care of all by himself? Yeah he won’t be doing too much parenting. I think all we will see are pics of a nanny or two nannies taking care of the kids instead of him.

  14. MsDez Says:

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with gay men, like Ricky Martin and Clay Aiken, having kids via surrogates, I do think there’s something wrong with gay men denying they’re gay as if being gay is a bad thing.

  15. Carmen. Says:

Okay. I didn’t know he is gay. There goes my love for him. :(

  16. Posh Says:

I dunno, women have babies all the time by surrogate because they don’t want to wait for the perfect man, maybe he doesn’t want to wait for the perfect person.

  17. julie Says:

I just think it’s weird that people want to have children so badly that they’ll do so with whomever they can find, using whatever weird science they can. Why not adopt, or foster parent, or find a new hobby? What’s so great about your own DNA?!

  18. rednexmama Says:

It’s hard to explain if you don’t have kids of your own, but seeing the reflection of yourself in your kids is an amazing gift. If you CAN find a way to have your own biological children, I don’t see any reason why not. And really, what’s so weird about this? Like Posh said, single women make that choice all the time. Why should men be denied the same privilege, gay or straight. And really there’s nothing saying that he won’t go on to adopt in the future, either. Good for him!

  19. Sassy K Says:

Richard S, there are about a million things wrong with your comment. Grow the fuck up.

  20. Joanne Says:

As someone said recently – having a child is a human desire – (for the most part). Not just a female desire. Everyone has the right to have their own biological child. As a lesbian, I grew up with the same dream of having a baby that most girls have. Adoption is not always the picture perfect situation it is portrayed as. Adopted children often have issues. It is funny how people now expect gays to clean up the foster child / adoption situation in America. Just because straight couples usually only want a ‘perfect’ baby. They don’t want to take in older kids … People will debate this … meanwhile R.M. will just get on with the job of being a parent – just like everyone else.

  21. Paz Says:

I guess it seems odd that Ricky would be a father if you only know him from Livin la Vida Loca and his English career.
He’s done a lot of work dedicated to helping kids get out of sex trafficking. He actually found 2 kids in India living in a plastic bag and took it upon himself to find them somewhere to live, as well as paying for their education.
He’s known as a silly pop star in the U.S., but he’s a good person. And yeah, i agree with Bech, he’s been mega successful in the Spanish speaking world, with a couple of live albums.
