Reading Is Fun-damental
I’ve basically been keeping a low profile over the past few days … only going out to hang out a bit with a few friends but really, trying to do as little as possible. Yesterday I managed to finally finish reading Twilight (which I started before my European vacay) and, in the end, quite liked it:

It’s really an easy read and the story is somewhat compelling but it didn’t blow my mind by any means. There’s charm in its simplicity but it isn’t very challenging. I can deffo see the appeal for the rabid fans, tho. It makes for a great teen romance read. As an origin story, there was a lot of explanation going on with only the meat of the action coming at the very end. I am already well into New Moon (the second book in the series) and I like where it’s going. Again, fun books but nothing too challenging. I do want to read the series to the end (even tho Breaking Dawn, the fourth book that has just been released, is being met with poor reviews from fans I still want to read thru to the end) so I’ll be making my way thru the books as quickly as possible to get on to other books on my pile.
Last night I met up with Mike and Jill for dinner at Bamboo in Sherman Oaks, CA. We decided on Chinese (in honor of the Beijing Olympics) and had a great time. Honestly, I wasn’t in the mood to make a night of it so I bailed on dancing with Darion and Jordan. I gotta say, I’m really enjoying doing all the nothing ;)
Tonight The GangTM is getting together for a fun dinner before Kirsten has to jet back to Australia for a few weeks … I am looking forward to seeing everyone all together … it shall be a blast.

I’m so upset that a lot of fans dislike Breaking Dawn. I have never in my life been so completely content and satisfied with a series ending – book, television or otherwise. As for Twilight, it’s great but definitely the least likable of the series. New Moon is FANTASTIC, though. . . but this is coming from a hardcore freak fanatic. =) I hope you end up warming up to them!
August 10th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I loved Breaking Dawn, and I have no Idea where all this negative feed back is coming from! These books were my guilty pleasure, and while the ending left me satisfied, I’m upset thats it’s all over. Ah well, we still have December 12th to look forward to!
ps. the Host also by Stephenie Meyer was brillz too ;)
August 10th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Breaking Dawn Sucked Major! I HATED IT.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
im still reading breaking dawn and am loving it

I am THRILLED to see that more people are reading Twilight & spreading the word. It’s wonderful!!
And, of course, I’m glad that you like it.
P.S.
I’m a “rabid fan,” as you call us, and like many others, I wasn’t a big fan of Breaking Dawn, it wasn’t the ending to the story I would’ve chosen (or, at least, I liked the ending, just not the say Stephenie Meyer got there…if that makes sense?) I’m curious to see your opinion on it when you’re done.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I’m so happy you’re reading my favorite series! They are all awesome– Breaking Dawn is actually my favorite!!! Keep reading!!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
team edward! :D
its great youre reading it, i just finished breaking dawn a few days ago.
i cannot wait for Midnight Sun! its same as Twilight but in Edwards perspective. much much better than bella’s in my opinion. Ive also read the first chapter of it and i cannot wait!!!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Simply seconding what Iris had to say – The Host WAS brilliant, you should definitely try to pick that up once you’ve read through this series.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Breaking Dawn hated by critics?
Critics are notorious for hating things that other people love. Just because a critic says its bad, doesn’t mean it is. It went to a very dark place in the last book, that’s why people are angry. But I think it was a brilliant ending to the series.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Woo for reading Twilight!! Breaking Dawn wasn’t as disappointing as Harry Potter #7 in my opinion.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I’m glad you finally read Twilight and are enjoying the series! I can understand why ‘rabid fans’ like myself didn’t like Breaking Dawn, but you can’t please everyone. Stephenie Meyer wrote it the way she wanted it to end, and I think she did an amazing job. I just didn’t think the final story really fit the rest of the series–the characters didn’t really seem like themselves, and it was a little weird. But I was very happy with the ending! Eclipse (the third) is my favorite, so keep reading :)
August 10th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
I’m in the middle of Twilight right now and I am loving it so far…oh, and I am seriously infatuated with Edward ;)
August 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
You should really pick up “Generation Dead” – it’s a highschool zombie story. Fun, fun!
August 10th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
TRENT! im soosossososo happy that you have read Twilight. believe me you are going to LOVE the whole series. it’s such a moving story.
August 10th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Try “The Historian” by Elizabeth Kostova instead. After hearing many people liking it I gave it a shot and love it! Writing with intelligence, now there is a thought!
August 10th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
The Twilight series is amazing, after the first couple chapters i was hooked. Its like a sci-fi book with vamps and werewolves, but when you read it, you cant even tell, it all just feels normal. I just finished breaking dawn a few days ago, and i liked it! i dont know what the hissyfit is about, really…
August 10th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Breaking Dawn. I am, just like other people are, upset that people didn’t like breaking dawn. But i do see where they are coming from. It was def. a big step away from the other books, but i guess i look at it like this: It was the ending to a series, so much has already happened, and you have to look at it as though, this is the last one, and she’s wrapping it up. The other ones were AMAZING, cause she left us hanging, but there is nothing to hang on to now. The series is done. Personally i think she finished the series perfect. She closed up all the loose ends, and i was pleased with it. Not my favorite book in the series, but not my least favorite.
Glad to see you finally picked them up Trent. =)
August 10th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
love twilight :)
August 10th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
breaking dawn was my favorite of the series, and like you, i was entertained and intrigued by twilight, but by no means was i completely blown away like most of the population. they get you hooked, though, and i’m sure you’ll get into it as you continue through the series!
August 10th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
These books are ridiculous.
I happen to love this chapter-by-chapter summary: http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/630150.html#cutid1
~spoiler warning~
August 10th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
I love the series. True, there were disappointments and at first I was a little upset with the book cause I was expecting more but then I remembered that the Twilight Saga was only suppose to be Twilight. Initially the other 3 books weren’t suppose to be released so by right Twilight was suppose to end on a happy note and she explained almost everything she had to. This series is really just simple and romantic, nothing more, nothing less. I have to admit it’s my guilty pleasure. The books I read are usually morbid.
I hope you’ll like it Trent.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
I love the twilight series. I wasn’t disappointed with Breaking Dawn at all. I really liked all of it. Glad you’re getting into the books Trent!
August 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I too just started reading this series…finished twilight this morning, then immediately ran out to Barnes & Noble to pick up the other 3 books. I really enjoyed Twilight and am enjoying new moon as well.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Love the Twilight series. Don’t know why the rabid fans are so upset with Breaking Dawn. I loved it.
August 10th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
TRENT!
you have to keep reading the series, it’s sooooooo good!
I’m just finishing up breaking dawn, and I’m pretty sad about it, I don’t want the story to endddd :(
August 10th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
i was a rabid fan up until the 4th book. it was too wrapped up too well. it is your teenage fairy tale story, which made me want to gag. but if you read the book with the mindset of a teenage girl in need of a romantic dream, then it’s a good book. keep your expectations low – it is NOT an adult book by any means, like the writing style and story compositions, which I can tell you’ve figured it out.
you’ll enjoy it if you think of it purely as teenage fangirl crack.
August 10th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Trent, you and I are always on the same wavelength when it comes to your reviews, whether it be books, movies, whatever. What you have to say about Twilight echoes exactly what I felt after reading it – I wasn’t blown away, I enjoyed it, want to read the others eventually, but can understand how teen girls can fall in love with it. I am eager to hear what you think about the others when you read them, so I know if it is worth it to continue, so please do post your thoughts!
August 10th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Yeah. I thought it was an extremely easy read too. At some parts of the book, I got annoyed at how predictable the romance was but got more annoyed at how simple the sentences were. Then I went to visit a friend and Twilight was on her 12 year old sister’s bookshelf. I felt shamed, but nevertheless, I will read the sequel.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Trent, you’re a lot more forgiving than I am. I didn’t actaully realize it was a book aimed at teenage girls when I picked it up (like an idiot, I ignored the old adage and DID judge the book by it’s cover, which was quite striking). I read it from beginning to end in one 3 hour flight, and then threw it in the trash when we touched down. I thought it was truly awful, with the most ridiculous Mary-sue main character I have ever come across. I’m actually surprised it’s so popular, even amongst the tweenies – this would not have impressed me at all at that age either. But I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Maybe if you know what to expect going in, it isn’t so bad.
August 10th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
The Twilight series is an easy read. And it’s a good one too. Which why it’s easy to fall in love with for many people. And as for Breaking Dawn I liked it, but at the same time I understand why many fans didn’t. Have fun reading New Moon though! It’s even better than Twilight.
August 10th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Love twilight. It’s so good. I don’t get how people were upset by Breaking Dawn. It was the perfect way to wrap everything up.
August 10th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I have to say, I thought Twilight made a good read as well, but the characters seemed so flat and the language was terribly repetitive. By the time I finished New Moon and Eclipse, I realized that the tiny flaws I found in Twilight were magnified throughout the rest of the series. It is certainly a teen romance with plenty of overemotional dribble, but I did think it was a cute storyline. I’m currently making my way through Breaking Dawn because I also want to finish the series, and so far, it’s been better than the last few books to be honest (perhaps because I’m less than halfway through).
August 10th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
I thought Breaking Dawn was amazing; it provided a lot of closure. I don’t understand the mixed reviews of it.. it was uncalled for. The book is different than the other 3 but it was necessary for it to be. Anyway, enjoy New Moon, that one is my favorite :)
August 11th, 2008 at 6:58 am
I am also up to New Moon and really enjoying the serie. The haters should lighten up a little. It’s a fun read that’s all. Perfect for Summer.
There is another vampire serie which looks interesting. It’s by Charlaine Harris and that’s what the upcoming shows True Blood will be based on. That’s next on my to read list after Twilight. :)
August 11th, 2008 at 7:53 am
Oh god Trent, I am so disappointed in you. Well, I’m disappointed in anybody who thinks that this book is anything more than Stephanie Meyer’s thinly (VERY thinly) veiled attempt at writing herself into the life she wants. They’re awful. Even her description of Bella matches her.
August 11th, 2008 at 8:44 am
I had to laugh a little since I JUST started reading the books this week and they are my new form of crack. I read Twilight and then rushed right out to get New Moon (which the checkout girl at Target told me she liked least…but i liked more than the first!). I hate to admit it, but this 32-yr old is totally digging some teen vampire/werewolf drama!
August 11th, 2008 at 9:37 am
I really enjoyed Twilight, but halfway through New Moon the main characters really started annoying me. I finished it anyway, liked Eclipse much more than NM, and as for Breaking Dawn…
Well, to be fair, I haven’t finished it yet. But I’m not hopeful. I tore through the first three books in a matter of days, but this last one has me irritated to the point of not really wanting to finish it. I’m not a rabid fan of the books by any means, but I had higher hopes for it. I won’t spoil it for you by saying why, but I will say that Bella and Edward still annoy me — I read it mostly for the secondary characters at this point, they’re a lot of fun.
August 11th, 2008 at 9:42 am
loved the series- hated breaking dawn. there is just SUCH buildup to where you know it is going and then nothing. abruptly you are left on your butt with it all wrapped in a pretty bow. I hate that

I read Twilight in one day. I cannot believe how wonderfully written that book is. I just started New Moon and I am half way through it.

How long did you have to read before you found the plot? I finished the series, and I’m still looking for it. If I’d known an entire series could be written to say “I love you” “No, I love YOU” and make as much money as this has, I’d have done it when I was 17.
I gave the whole series a pretty scathing review.
August 11th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
nat! we are reading the historian right now in book club. you are right, its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy better than any of the twilight series
posh! i so concur with your assessment of the series. breaking dawn was the worst of them for sure. after reading the other three i wanted to know how it all ended, but it was work to get thru breaking dawn. hells bells this womans writing was at its worst in this book.
oh, and i wish she thanked the band muse more. weird.
August 11th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
LOL becky you totally just summed up the series so beautifully! love it!
August 11th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Well I’m in a HP book club and all the ladies are reading Twilight so I thought “what the heck, I love Vampires, I’ve been reading Vampire Kisses series, which is for teens as well, why not”?
So far I’m in the middle of Twilight and its cute. I’m 29, so I just pretend I’m 16 again and its a nice read. I also got the next 2 and will keep on till the end.
Just keep in mind folks, Steph is no Tolkien and you won’t have your hopes up!
August 11th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
IT IS FICTION!!!! The story is about vampires. How can people seriously be so angry about a story that is pure fantasy?? All in all the books are a good story. Are they groundbreaking? No. They are what they are: pure entertainment. For all those that have made it their life mission to make sure that everyone knows how much they hate the books, pull your panties out of a wad and move on. Write your own story if you think that you can do better. We need more great authors in this world anyway. Stephanie Meyer should be commended for sparking interest in young readers, no matter how silly you think the storyline is.
August 11th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
I love the Twilight series, and Breaking Dawn was my favorite, I loved how it ended, Ms Meyer wrote the first book when she was 29, and she wrote the book for woman her age, and the fans range from 12 to 82 years old. I read somewhere that they made her tone down the violence and sexual type scenes since a lot of the readers are young. The story is so beautiful, I mean what is more beautiful then true love. Enjoy all the books, I know I did,
and see the movie on December 12th
August 11th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
the movie will destroy it.
it looks dreadful.
come on, the chick from The Messengers as Bella?
bitch, please.
August 11th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
I’ve been waiting for you to say something about Twilight, now talk about how HOT Robert Pattinson is (aka Edward) , LOL
I loved the books. People hated Breaking Dawn but I liked it. I’ve seen it get an A- in Time and a D in E.W. Either you love it or hate it. Either way the series rules and the movie is going to rock.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
how can you fans be angry with those who weren’t satisfied with BD? i’m not too thrilled about it and don’t think it’s meyer’s best work, but it doesn’t mean i’m not fans of hers or the twilight saga. so CALM the fuck down and let people think what they want.
PS i love edward hahehaheha
August 13th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I’m also one of the “rabid fans” and I thought Breaking Dawn was amazing! Parts of it are a bit slow, but overall it was probably my favorite! Hope you enjoy the rest of the books.
