Designing That Olympic Spirit
Project Runway got into the Olympic spirit with this week’s ep (and just in time as the 29th Olympic Games get underway in Beijing, China tomorrow) as the designers were challenged to create women’s wear outfits for the US Olympic Team that would be fit to wear to the opening ceremonies of the Summer Games:

Celebrity guest judge and Olympian speed skater Apolo Ono was on hand to help with the judging process. After the jump, find out who was in, who was out and who took home the Gold (since we already know that Blayne won the Bronzer) …
Okay … so there was a whole lotta look this time around. Much of it was fug, I must be honest, but some of it was pretty interesting. While I didn’t have much problem with the winning design I was pretty flabbergasted that the one design that I felt was so heinously inappropriate for any Olympic ceremony was not deemed the losing design (or even selected to be in the bottom two, for that matter). I think it was the biggest shock I’ve ever personally felt while watching any episode of Project Runway — ever:

First, the good stuff … I loved that Korto was able to tell her story on camera, tho it had me worried for a sec. Usually when the producers allow the designers to get personal on camera it means they are about to be axed from the show. I was happy that Korto was the winner this week, I think she is a great designer. Honestly, my fave design was Leanne’s … hands down, it was the most stylishly fashion forward one of the bunch for me. She keeps impressing me, I think she’s the quiet contender that might go all the way. I also liked Joe’s and Terri’s designs very much, they were very Olympic to me. The rest of the looks were just so wrong, so off point. I was ON THE FLOOR WITH SHOCK that Stella was not cut from competition. When her design came down the runway and I saw that belly button hole on the front of her BLACK LEATHER outfit I was SURE she was going home. Seriously, what the EFF were the judges thinking?! I can’t BELIEVE that Nina Garcia passed up the opportunity to rip this look apart in the judging stage. I’m sorry, I’ve never so disagreed with the judges like I do this time. Jennifer, Lord, she was so due to go home … she must have lots of Holly Hobby dresses to make back in Walnut Grove. She was a very sweet girl, her designs were very sweet but Nina’s right to say that she can’t get out of her design mind frame. I don’t know how she keeps thinking she’s a surrealist but … she’s sweet. This week, Suede kept his annoyingness to a minimum, Blayne — my gods — I kinda just want to slap him. The vapidness in this poor boy … it’s kinda hard to watch on a weekly basis. To be fair, he does have some design skills … I’ll give him that … but I don’t think he has two thoughts in his little brain to rub together. I wonder how far he’ll go. This week, I deffo started warming up to the designers … I’m starting to feel an affinity for them … now, it’s game on. Who are y’all’s faves? Do we see a Final 3 yet?
PS: Note to Daniel, stop messing around with Wesley this weekend and watch the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.
PPS: I’m happy to learn that Tim Gunn agrees with me on Stella (“Stella, oh Stella. How is it that you continue to persist?”) but is diametrically opposed to my love of Leanne’s design (“Leanne, what happened? … The collar looked haphazard and lacked polish.”). His blog HERE on last night’s ep is a great read.

GO JOE!

I think Stella used a form of black satin. It wasn’t good but at least it wasn’t leather.

I really like Leanne’s design as well. I think Leanne and Terry are my favs so far.
Leather Tuscadero has got to go.
Heidi: “This weeks challenge is making a wedding gown”
Stella: “If you don’t think leatha is cool for a wedding you can get the f*** outta hea.”
Heidi: This weeks challenge is making a baptism dress for a baby”
Stella: “Babies like leatha too ya know.
I don’t know how much more I can take….

Team Joe!
August 7th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
jennifer needed to go home last week and stella needed to go home at casting.

i cannot believe suede is STILL talking in third person! what is wrong with him?? if he says ’suede is gonna rock it!’ and points at the screen one more time, i may break my tv.
i didn’t think stella’s was THAT bad. but she does the same thing every week…she’ll be gone soon. jennifer’s was definitely the least appropriate. i didn’t like this challenge at all..i think the majority of the designs were blah or just inappropriate. i think Joe’s was the only one that Olympians would actually wear. jerell’s was completely ridiculous.
kelly, kinley, korto, terri, and joe are the front runners in my mind.

I’m definitely a fan of Korto now. At first I couldn’t clearly see her talent and she seemed to have a shitty attitude but now I can definitely see her point of view and I like it! I’m all for her now. Joe is annoying. Itching for him to go home next. As is Kenley. I liked her last couple of designs but lately her personality is starting to be the nails on the chalkboard of my brain. Eek! TOP THREE: KORTO, TERRY, KELLI. Woot! <3

First of all, I loves me some Apolo. As for the designers, Korto for the win and Kenley, please, please, please, stop laughing and please, stop trying to emulate Bettie Page. Thank you.

I heard from a reliable source that Daniel and Wesley may have a spin-off reality series documenting their love and eventual marriage!!
August 7th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
At least it will be fun to watch Blaine get paler and paler each episode since he can’t go tanning!

SKORT!

I actually liked Stella’s design better than many of the others. I feel as though the top three designs were the only ones I could actually picture a female olympic athlete wearing in public. I did think Joe’s was a little bit cuter, but maybe a bit too retro for the judges’ tastes? (I wanted to see him win this round at least, since so far he’s had an interesting design each round but gotten very little notice from the judges.)
I think we still have one or two more boring folks to see go before things get really interesting. Can’t wait for the inevitable menswear challenge ;)

GREAT RECAP!
I think some of the designers heard “SPECIAL” Olympics, and not Summer Olympics. “JerHell” in particular.

Trent!
I’m in despair! I just moved this past weekend to a new city and our new cable doesn’t have BRAVO!!! How will I go on without my favorite reality show each week. Thank God I have your recaps and thank God PR is switching networks so I can get my fix again next season.
Stella needed to go home forever ago, and Suede and Blaine need to be auf’d because they’re annoying as hell, and, let’s face it, that’s not good tv.
My faves are Korto, Terri, and …..I dunno who else.
August 7th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Okay…was Jarell actually dressed up as Robin Hood or what that just me?
I actually laughed out loud when Stella’s outfit came out. What the hell were the judges thinking?
I love love love Terri. She’s my favorite so far.
August 7th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
I really loved Kenley’s outfit, it was so classy, which is nice to see with so much trash going down the runway
August 8th, 2008 at 7:51 am
Go Blayne! hahahha Holla atcha boy
August 8th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Teams Terry, Kelli, and Joe! Yippie!
August 8th, 2008 at 10:01 am
I loved Korto’s so I was so happy she won.

Why did you ignore Joe’s blatant homophobia in your blog post? “There’s too much drama here because there are so many queens.” And you like this guy, Trent?
August 9th, 2008 at 8:30 am
I think it’s a bit much to say that Joe calling people queens is “blatant homophobia”. I do like him.
