‘American Idol’ Adds A 4th Judge
Brilliant move or desperate ploy?

American Idol producers have decided that the show needs a little something extra for their upcoming 8th season — a 4th judge. Now, with a show as popular as American Idol (arguably the most popular show in the US) you might imagine that this plum 4th spot might go to someone of stellar importance and fame but, in fact, the producers decided to go with someone with zero name recognition … and way more Paula Abdulness (at least in looks) than I would’ve guessed. Here is a pic of Paula Abdul making her way thru LAX airport this weekend bound for NYC and a pic of the new 4th AI judge, Kara DioGuardi, who is lookin’ to start wearin’ Paula‘s hat:

American Idol is adding a fourth judge: Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi. DioGuardi will appear at the judges’ table with Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson on the eighth season of the hit show, which premieres in January. “We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table,” show creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said in a statement. DioGuardi’s songs have appeared on more than 100 million records by the likes of Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Pink, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey … “She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America’s most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show,” Fuller added. American Idol was originally slated to have four judges, executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said in the statement announcing the news. “We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers,” she explained.

To be totally honest, this move to add a 4th judge feels really forced … like the producers felt like they needed to do something to jazz up the show which will be entering its 8th season in January. On the one hand, going with an “unknown” person as the 4th judge means that she will not take away too much from the already established judges on the panel. On the other hand, this new judge looks a lot like Paula Abdul … and the fact that she has written Grammy Award nominated songs for so many performers gives her a pedigree that Paula doesn’t have — should she be worried? I am actually very surprised that AI didn’t go for someone with more starpower to be the 4th judge … no offense to the obvs talented Ms. DioGuardi but she doesn’t really inspire any more desire to watch the show for me. In the end, I believe that AI will still be as popular as it would’ve been even if they didn’t add a new judge to the mix … I find it hard to believe that ratings will go up merely because of the addition of this new judge. I guess we’ll see come January.

I would still watch AI even if there wasn’t this new judge. Not too sure what she would add…regardless of her having grammy’s? i think the set up right now is fine

Yah, the show is a mess and this is not going to help. A rotating judge who tell’s it like it is would be much more appropriate – similar to So You Think You Can Dance — where the judges, um, tell you if it was A) Good or B) Bad and why. Not the usual:
Randy: It was pitchy and just ‘aight for me.
Paula: I have to agree but you look just stunning tonight…wait, where am I?
Simon: I have to say, that sucked ass.

i think GUEST judges work great… because its someone new every week. also… i would think a blonde person would LOOK better on the pannel. its all very monotone… they need a little diversity. idk. i havnt watched the show in seasons… kinda lost interest after a while. :(

The ratings were slightly down because the show is getting tired. The “themes” they did this past season were horrible and not that relatable to the young audience. The contestants were ok, but not nearly “The most talented group ever!” like they promoted in the beginning. I mean, it was a pretty talented Top 24, not as impressive by the time it got to the Top 12. The kids were too media-savvy and having previous deals (a few of them) definitely took away from the “newness.” I don’t see how a 4th judge will change that….

I surprised to hear the news as well. This morning Paula Abdual called in to Johnjay and Rich here in the Phoenix area and explained that she actually discoved Kara back in about 1999. She went on to say that she moved Kara from NYC to LA and let her live in her home with her. Interesting. I actually think it will be a good dynamic with Paula having a “partner in crime.” I believe you can hear a podcast from the Johnjay and Rich website for the whole story…

  6. Someone told me that Nicole from PCD was gonna be the 4th judge, not that it really matters, I don’t watch it but I thought would be a really bad idea…she’s hot & would totally shove Paula right out.

Rock on Rachel! i heard the same broadcast too! I guess Paula thought Kara was an amazing songwriter, she met her randomly and went back to Karas pad to hear her talent.. Paula liked her so much she doted her all around the world to showcase her talent.

Paula’s such a loose cannon, they probably are bringing this lady on to slowly phase out Paula’s role. Why do we need more opinions when Simon and Randy pretty much say it all? 4 people on the panel is overkill. It’s akin to Queer Eye’s Jai Rodriguez as the “Culture Expert.” Meaningless.
