Kate Moss: Golden Girl

Literally
Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Remember THIS statue of Kate Moss? Well, I guess it was time for an upgrade:

She’s been immortalized in bronze, painted in oils and photographed all over the world. Now Kate Moss – fashion icon, mother and long time paparazzi favourite – has been paid the kind of compliment normally reserved for Egyptian queens and mythological goddesses. She has been sculpted in gold. A new statue of the controversial model is to unveiled at the British museum for an exhibition in October. The 34-year-old will join some of the nation’s other great treasures, including a centuries old statue of a naked Aphrodite, on loan from the Queen. This is the first teasing glimpse of the £1.5million likeness of Kate, one of a series by Marc Quinn, the artist responsible for the ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ sculpture that adorned the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square for 20 months. The museum released only a detail of the Kate Moss work in the hope that the full image could remain private until its unveiling. The statue, entitled ‘Siren’, depicts her in a yoga contortion. If it follows the theme of his previous Kate Moss works, it will place her feet somewhere near her ears and leave various other bits of her leotard-clad body inelegantly exposed to public gaze. The statue is said to be the largest of its kind since ancient Egyptian times. It is fashioned from solid gold. But because the statue is hollow, it weighs only 50 kilograms (110 lb) – possibly a little more than the waif-like subject on which it is modeled.

Um … why Kate Moss? Why not, say, Bea Arthur? Seriously. Anyone?

Playtime With The Joker

Collector fanboys, take note
Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Here are a few pics of the new Joker action figure from Batman: The Dark Knight, created by Hot Toys, which is about to hit the market … I’m just amazed at how much this little figure looks exactly like Heath Ledger. I mean, I know that action figures are supposed to look like the actors who play their characters but that isn’t always the case … in this instance, the likeness is uncanny:

Hot Toys is releasing a 1/6th scale figure of The Joker in “Bank Robber” mode. The figure stands 12-inches tall, features 32-points of articulation, and comes with a choice of two removable heads, one with a huge grin, the other with the slicked back hair. Accessories include a removable clown mask, handgun, a bigger gun, duffle bag, smoke and fragmentation grenades, playing cards, gotham city money and more.

Click HERE to see more photos of this action figure, it’s really very remarkably made. I have a pretty good feeling that Heath would’ve gotten a real kick out of this action figure had he been able to see while he still lived. I think it’s a pretty cool tribute to the chilling character that he portrayed in The Dark Knight. Well done.

‘Kath & Kim’ Film New Scenes

It's a mall world
Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Molly Shannon and Selma Blair, stars of the new US version of the outrageously hilarious Aussie comedy Kath & Kim, were spied shooting new scenes for the first season of their new series. The gals were snapped filming a scene (with the actor who plays Kel) on an escalator at a SoCal shopping mall (the Burbank Town Center?) yesterday afternoon … take a look:

You may recall that I recently posted a few promo vid clips of the new US version of Kath & Kim which give us a good feel for what’s in store with this new incarnation of the show. It’s really hard to judge comedy from just pics like these so I am still reserving judgment on the show until it debuts on NBC this October. I dunno tho … there seems to be an awful lot of American Apparel being used in this new series. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Michael Phelps Does CBS’s ‘Early Show’

America's golden boy makes the media rounds
Thursday, August 28th, 2008

14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, fresh from his stunning performance at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, paid a visit to the CBS Early Show this morning to talk about his amazing achievements and to fill us in on what he’s been doing since he won 8 Gold Medals at the Olympic Games just weeks ago. Here are a few pics from Phelpsie’s appearance this morning:

Michael Phelps is enjoying some downtime after his historic performance at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. The champion swimmer won more gold medals at one Olympics, eight, than anyone ever had, surpassing the mark of seven set by fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz. Phelps also set seven world records in Beijing, and has 16 Olympic medals in all, 14 of them gold. Phelps just got back to the United States, and says the attention he’s getting, while expected, is still surprising. “It’s kind of strange,” he told co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez on The Early Show plaza Thursday — as soon as we walked off of the plane, people were doing double-takes. It’s kind of fun to watch people’s reactions. But I’m enjoying every minute along the way, and I’m just having fun.” Phelps says he’s “just trying to take it all in and remember every experience I’ve had.” He says in his blog that he couldn’t wait to be on the plane home from overseas and just relax. And, he told Rodriguez, he’s had “a little R&R here and there, but I think, over the next month-and-a-half, I’ll be able to settle down a little bit more and hopefully get settled in my new place and have some downtime.” And that includes no workouts for awhile. Phelps already has his sights set on the Games in London in four years, but says he won’t be training “for the next few months. Just taking some time off. Actually, I haven’t exercised at all since my last day of competition (over a week ago). But I think I need to start doing something. I’m getting kind of antsy just sitting around!” Phelps says all that’s happened hasn’t really hit him yet: “In Beijing, I had to really focus on one event at a time. And once that event was done, I had to put it behind me. That’s just sort of where my mind frame was during the meet. And once it was over, I don’t think everything has really set in, but I think, over the next few months and years, I think it really will set in, and I’m proud of everything that I’ve done and I’m happy I had this opportunity” … Phelps was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated with all eight of his gold medals around his neck, in a shot reminiscent of the one of Mark Spitz on the cover of the same magazine after Spitz’ Olympic wins. And Phelps says of the shot, “The medals are a little crooked, but it’s a cool shot. When I first was taking it, I had never had them all on at once, and I never realized how heavy it was. But it was a fun picture, and I’m glad I was able to take it like that. It looks pretty cool, I think” … Phelps wouldn’t tell Rodriguez whether he’s seeing anyone at the moment, saying he wants to keep that part of his life private.

Awww, there is something really endearing in Phelps’s geeky, awkwardness. That boy is all teeth and ears … oh, and Gold Medals. And don’t you just love that he’s keepin’ mum on his private life? Clearly he doesn’t want to fuel the flames of goss that has been going on since THESE photos came out. He is such a tease. Additionally, it has been announced that Michael Phelps will be the host of the season premiere of Saturday Night Live:

Michael Phelps is continuing his dominance out of the water — he’ll host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live on September 13, NBC announced Wednesday. Rapper Lil Wayne will join the Olympic swimmer — who won eight gold medals in Beijing — as musical guest. Phelps, 23, will also be a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday. Last week, Phelps landed a book deal for his memoir, titled Built to Succeed.

Even in his downtime, Phelpsie is still keepin’ bizzy. He’s great. I can’t wait to see him on SNL. Do we think he’ll manage to pull it off?

The TV Guide
Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Last night I met up with Erik and Steve at their place for a little hanging out session … we decided to head on out to the Woodward Aveue Brewery for drinks an conversation. It was a short visit but we did manage to get all caught up on what is going on in all our lives. It’s been ages since I’ve been to the WAB (we used to go there after kickball games back in the day and I even had a birthday party there once) so it was nice to go back. I really like what they’ve done with the place:

I’ve always been impressed with the graffiti in the WAB restroom :) They also added a b&w photobooth … I’m gonna have to get Sarah there so we can take some fun new pics.

So … yeah, that was my day. It rained here last night … which was actually nice. I’m really enjoying my time here in D-Town. Tonight, a whole bunch of us are meeting up for drinks and such to celebrate VLB’s belated birthday … should be fun. I may have to pass thru Somerset Mall as well … to uh, shop for gifts … yeah, that’s it ;)
