More sad news
Isaac Hayes, Dead At 65

More unbelievable sad news to report today … the New York Times has just reported that legendary soul singer Isaac Hayes (perhaps better known to South Park fans as the voice of Chef) has died today in his Memphis, TN home. He was 65 years old:

Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless “Theme From Shaft” won Academy and Grammy awards, has been found dead at home. He was 65. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says a family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill on Sunday. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis. The cause of death was not immediately known. In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, for what became known as urban-contemporary music and for romantic crooners like Barry White. And he was rapping before there was rap. His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show “South Park.”

I am at a total loss. Another death already? Yesterday we lost Bernie Mac, today Isaac Hayes. I’m sure more deets about Isaac‘s passing will be available soon but … I just can’t believe that this keeps happening. My thoughts and condolences go out to the entire Hayes family.

The TV Guide
Reading Is Fun-damental

I’ve basically been keeping a low profile over the past few days … only going out to hang out a bit with a few friends but really, trying to do as little as possible. Yesterday I managed to finally finish reading Twilight (which I started before my European vacay) and, in the end, quite liked it:

It’s really an easy read and the story is somewhat compelling but it didn’t blow my mind by any means. There’s charm in its simplicity but it isn’t very challenging. I can deffo see the appeal for the rabid fans, tho. It makes for a great teen romance read. As an origin story, there was a lot of explanation going on with only the meat of the action coming at the very end. I am already well into New Moon (the second book in the series) and I like where it’s going. Again, fun books but nothing too challenging. I do want to read the series to the end (even tho Breaking Dawn, the fourth book that has just been released, is being met with poor reviews from fans I still want to read thru to the end) so I’ll be making my way thru the books as quickly as possible to get on to other books on my pile.

Last night I met up with Mike and Jill for dinner at Bamboo in Sherman Oaks, CA. We decided on Chinese (in honor of the Beijing Olympics) and had a great time. Honestly, I wasn’t in the mood to make a night of it so I bailed on dancing with Darion and Jordan. I gotta say, I’m really enjoying doing all the nothing ;)

Tonight The GangTM is getting together for a fun dinner before Kirsten has to jet back to Australia for a few weeks … I am looking forward to seeing everyone all together … it shall be a blast.

Weekend Hotness
Hot Dude Of The Week: Brendon

Wee! It is that time of the week again, time to say hello to the Hot Dude of the Week and marvel at his ability to do nothing whatsoever other than look hot while wearing a little clothing as possible. This week we’ve got ourselves a gent who is wearing more clothes than other Hot Dudes and, yet, still manages to bring the sexy. Say hello to Brendon:

I think I like this pic because it’s not too overly gratuitous, especially since there are other pics of Brendon that are much more risqué (ie. he’s basically fully nekkid). But I think that there is something to be said about subtlety from time to time. It’s a nice pic for this nice Sunday. Mebbe next week we’ll find a dirty boy ;)

I pity the fools
They Want To Be Paris Hilton’s New BFF

In the annuls of modern history, rarely (if ever) have we been presented with a competitive reality television show that attempts to award one lucky contestant with a prize so great, so desirous that the mere thought of winning such a prize seems … almost dreamlike. Here is the first cast photo of the young hopefuls that will be vying for the coveted position of Paris Hilton‘s New BFF:

A group of 20 women will live together and compete in various challenges, in order to be anointed Paris Hilton’s new best friend.

Uhh, I love how the contestants are labeled as “20 women” when you can see that there is at least one guy in the mix. LOL! Honestly, I think any person who is so willing to endure the travails presented to them in order to be Paris Hilton‘s BFF absolutely deserves everything they have coming to them. Good luck!

'Breaking' news?
What’s Wrong With That Leg, Madonna?

Here are a couple pics of Madonna making her weekly visit to the Kabbalah Centre in NYC this weekend but you will note that her left ankle is securely wrapped in bandages as she hobbled her way inside:

There are reports that Maddy had very noticeable difficulty going up the stairs on her bad ankle and that she had to be ushered into an elevator for her express use. Now, as always, these reports could be grossly exaggerated but still … a wrapped ankle ain’t a good sign, especially with that world tour coming up. HMMM … should we be worried?

The Laugh Factory pays homage; His sister-in-law speaks
Bernie Mac Remembered

Yesterday we woke up to the terribly sad news that comedian Bernie Mac had passed away at the age of 50 due to complications of pneumonia but it turns out that he also suffered from a lung disease called sarcoidosis which played a part in his passing. His sister-in-law speaks to People magazine about Bernie’s last days … additionally, in tribute to his untimely death, the famed Laugh Factory paid homage to Bernie on their marquee which faces Sunset Blvd:

Bernie Mac’s wife and daughter were with him until the very end, says the late comic’s sister-in-law in a personal and touching interview with PEOPLE that took place Saturday. Speaking of a heartbreaking moment between her younger sister, Rhonda, and the 50-year-old actor-comedian – who succumbed to complications from pneumonia in a Chicago hospital at 2 a.m. Saturday – Mary Ann Grossett says that the night before Mac died, “He struggled for his life. He couldn’t breathe. “He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda. She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, ‘Don’t leave me … ‘I’m waiting for you to come back.’ He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that’s when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired” … The sister-in-law says Mac’s inflammatory lung disease contributed to his death. “He had sarcoidosis, but it was in remission,” she says. “But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection … He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that’s where the pneumonia came from.” She reveals that Mac – having trouble breathing and running a fever – was actually hospitalized on July 24, eight days before the date given for his admittance. The actor was diagnosed with pneumonia and immediately placed on a ventilator. “He was critically ill when he was in the hospital,” says Gossett. “He was in intensive care the whole time.” She adds that doctors kept the star sedated, although he was conscious at times and he contracted a second strain of pneumonia while in the hospital … Mac’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 15, at an undisclosed location. The family requests that donations be made to the Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis, 40 E. Ninth St., Suite 601, Chicago IL 60605.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I, for one, had no idea that he was so sick and had been struggling with his illness for so long. It’s a horribly sad notion to think that Bernie was bed-ridden and sedated for the past few weeks. He was such an incredibly funny man, he will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Rest well, Bernie.

Is on course to become the greatest Olympic athlete of all time
Michael Phelps Wins Another Gold Medal

US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps won his first gold medal of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China yesterday (or today? I’m still not sure how the time difference works) and he did so by also setting a new world record for the Men’s 400-meter Individual Medley:

This latest gold medal is his 7th overall, which has him closing in on Olympic athletes Larisa Latynina, Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and Paavo Nurmi‘s 9 gold medals (which is the most gold medals of any single Olympian) … but with quite a few more events still to come in these Olympics, I think that Phelps will end up surpassing Spitz and will end up as the most successful Olympian of all time. But, let’s just focus on this gold medal right now:

Michael Phelps got one of his toughest races out of the way, and it couldn’t have been any easier. With U.S. President George W. Bush cheering him on, Phelps dominated his first event of the Beijing Olympics on Sunday morning, crushing his own world record and all hopes of his challengers with a mark of 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley. This was thought to be a potential stumbling block in Phelps’ quest to win eight gold medals after fellow American and good friend Ryan Lochte matched him stroke for stroke at the U.S. Olympic trials just over a month ago. Both went under the previous world record in the 400 IM then, with Phelps touching first in 4:05.25. But Phelps beat Lochte when it really mattered. Laszlo Cseh of Hungary took the silver in 4:06.16, while Lochte faded to third in 4:08.09 — more than 4 seconds behind the amazing Phelps. “I’m pretty happy. That was a pretty emotional race,” Phelps said. “I knew it was going to be a tough race all the way through” … On the medal stand, Phelps’ eyes watered as the U.S. flag was raised to the rafters. The only glitch came during the playing of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” which cut off a few seconds before the end, cracking up Phelps. Lochte, who thought he could give Phelps a run for the gold, was blown out by the world’s greatest swimmer.

Amazing. Michael Phelps is like a machine … and he just keeps getting better and better. I have no doubt that he’s going to pick up at least a couple more gold medals, if not more. He really makes the US Olympic Team proud. Well done, Phelpsie … I’m looking forward to seeing you atop a few more medal stands as the Olympic Games carry on.
