Madonna Attends The Traverse City Film Festival

Who says you can never go home again?
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Material Motown Girl Madonna brought her daughter, Lourdes Maria, and her new documentary I Am Because We Are to the Traverse City Film Festival in Northern Michigan this weekend. Co-founded by Flint, Michigan’s own documentarian Michael Moore, the Traverse City Film Festival, which is in its 4th year, scored a major coup by getting Madonna to show her documentary at their fest … here are a few pics of Maddy, Lola and Michael on the red carpet and at her screening in Traverse City this weekend:

She might be known worldwide as the Material Girl, but there’s more than a little of the small-town Michigan girl left in Madonna. The pop superstar arrived in this northern Michigan resort town Saturday to introduce her documentary, “I Am Because We Are,” a highlight of the Traverse City Film Festival. The event was co-founded by filmmaker, author and fellow Michigan native Michael Moore. Hundreds of fans cheered from behind barricades as Madonna, wearing a black dress, high heels and sunglasses, stepped out of a black sport utility vehicle that pulled up in front of the State Theatre. She hugged a waiting Moore, who sported an orange baseball cap, and posed for photos with him. Madonna and Moore shared the stage at the theater before a screening of the movie, which deals with the orphans of Malawi, the African nation where she and husband Guy Ritchie adopted a son. “It’s great bringing my movie to a place that I feel familiar,” Madonna told the audience. “Not like the Cannes Film Festival, where nobody’s speaking English, or the Tribeca Film Festival, where no one sits down. There’s something poetic about coming back to the place where I used to come for holidays — camping trips with my dad and stepmother and my very large family,” said the 49-year-old singer, born to the southeast in Bay City and raised in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills. Madonna was accompanied by her 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes, and the film’s director, Nathan Rissman. Ritchie was not present. Moore, who won an Oscar for his 2002 documentary “Bowling for Columbine,” said he was humbled to be able to call Madonna a friend. “She has such an incredible heart and such a generous spirit,” he said. “She does so much out of the glare of the lights to make the world a better place.” Madonna had praise of her own for Moore, 54, a Flint-area native who has a home near Traverse City. “There aren’t a lot of role models for us in the world, or people we can look up to,” she said. “People who are not afraid to stick their neck out, people who are not afraid to stand up for things and be unpopular, to go against the grain, think outside the box. And we need, and I need, Michael Moore in my life.”

Awww … sounds like a good old fashioned lovefest going on in the great State of Michigan. I think it’s very cool that Madonna agreed to screen her film in Traverse City for the Film Festival. It’s very rare for Maddy to step foot back in Michigan these days (the woman hasn’t even brought a concert tour to her homestate since the Drowned World tour) so it’s very nice for her to deign to return home again. Hopefully Madonna’s appearance and the Film Festival as a whole will bring a financial boon to the area … that’s my home, y’all :)

Shannen Doerhty Steps Back On The Scene

With a new dude in tow
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Now that Shannen Doherty has wisely agreed to be a special guest star on the new Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off series for The CW this Fall, the paparazzi are taking notice of her more and are going out of their way to snap new photos of the lass. Unfortch for Shannen, she is not used to the attention (since she’s been out of the limelight for eons now) and tried to complain to the Malibu police that she is being harassed (in an incident that occurred last weekend) … sadly, tho, the police officers she spoke with had no idea who she was. In any event, Shannen continues to soldier on and brave the unwanted attention nonetheless … here are new pics of Shannen out for dinner with a male companion at Nobu in Malibu this weekend:

That new “90210″ show can’t come along fast enough for Shannen Doherty. We know Shannen went to the Sheriff’s Department in Lost Hills (Malibu) to complain about paparazzi following her. The cops who talked to her were baffled … because they had no idea who she was. The deputy at the front desk confessed he had no idea who she was. Shannen retorted that she was on TV. The deputy, in a scene reminiscent of “Take the Money and Run,” began asking others around him if they knew who she was, but none did. We’re told Shannen then left in a huff.

OMG … I bet poor Shannen was mor-ti-fied at this embarrassing mistreatment … but on the other hand, it’s funny as hell. When last we saw Shannen out and about in public around these here parts, ’twas back in March when she was seen emerging from Nobu in Malibu with her former Charmed castmate Holly Marie Combs — either Shannen really, really, really likes the food there or she doesn’t really mind the crush of paparazzi attention since it’s very common knowledge that the paps are pretty much stationed at Nobu on a daily basis since the Malibu celebs like to eat there a lot. Oh Shannen, it is amazing to have you back :)

Shia LaBeouf Shows Off His New Accessory

Casting call!
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

The recently injured Shia LaBeof was spotted out and about in Hollywood, CA this past Thursday proudly (perhaps not) showing off the new cast that he is forced to wear on his “crushed” hand after his unfortunate car accident last weekend. His doctor lawyer reveals that his recuperation period might be long … long enough that his injury may have to be written into the script of the Transformers sequel he is currently filming:

Shia LaBeouf could have a long road before him as he recovers from the accident that crushed his hand, his lawyer says. LaBeouf, 22, was injured in a late-night crash last Sunday in West Hollywood that flipped his truck. The “Indiana Jones” star was cited for drunken driving, but authorities have since said he was not at fault, and that the other driver apparently ran a red light. Michael Norris, LaBeouf’s attorney, said in a statement Friday LaBeouf underwent four hours of surgery. His left arm remains immobilized from the elbow down. “He will need regular medical supervision until his doctors clear him to return to work,” Norris said in the statement. “His doctors remain hopeful that he will fully recover, but due to extensive surgery and the nature of the injuries, there remains a substantial risk of both infection and other complications.” Photos posted on entertainment blogs Friday showed LaBeouf wearing jeans, a ballcap and a T-shirt missing one sleeve as he smoked a cigarette outside the Los Angeles hospital where he has been recovering since the surgery. Bandages and a brace cover his left arm, leaving only his pinkie finger exposed. LaBeouf has been filming the “Transformers” sequel, “Revenge of the Fallen.” Director Michael Bay said the injury may be added to the script. “His two fingers are pretty smashed, but we’re figuring out a way to shoot around it, kind of write it into the story,” Bay told “Access Hollywood” in an interview that aired Friday. Bay claimed his leading man was not drunk at the time of the crash and insisted that “that’s gonna go away.” “He was drinking hours and hours before,” Bay told the syndicated entertainment show.

HMMM … well, irregardless of whether or not he was drinking at the time of the accident (I have my assumption on that one), it’s pretty crappy for Shia that he has to endure the recuperation period that comes with having a crushed hand. It sounds like a very painful injury and I wouldn’t want to wish that on anyone. I feel bad for the kid … even if (and it’s a big “if”) his reckless behavior led in any way to his injury, I hope he heals quickly and mebbe learns a valuable lesson. Who knows … in the end, I just hope that he is able to successfully heal from his injuries as quickly as possible.
