The ‘Pregnant Man’ Gives Birth

'Man' gives birth to Girl
July 3rd, 2008

Thomas Beatie, better known to the world as the “Pregnant Man”, has just given birth to a baby girl — according to ABC News (THOMAS BEATIE, ALSO KNOWN AS THE ‘PREGNANT MAN,’ GIVES BIRTH TO A HEALTHY BABY GIRL, ABC NEWS HAS LEARNED). No real details are available just yet but just this past Monday it was reported that Beatie was due to give birth “within the week” … and BOOM! here we are:

Thomas Beatie, the transgender man who made headlines as the so-called “pregnant man,” gave birth today to a healthy baby girl, ABC News has learned. Born a woman, Beatie, 34, who had his breasts surgically removed and legally changed his gender from female to male, leaped to prominence around the world in April when the wispy bearded man revealed he was pregnant. Despite years of taking hormones and living outwardly as a man, Beatie maintained that he retained his female sex organs because he intended one day to get pregnant. “I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Beatie told Oprah Winfrey in April. “I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” he said. Beatie was impregnated with sperm from a donor. His wife, Nancy, inseminated him at home with a device she said was like a syringe without the needle. They bought it from a veterinarian and it is typically used to feed birds. He has an intact vagina, but he has not yet revealed how he delivered the baby.

Now there’s something you don’t hear about every day. I suppose congratulations are in order for the happy family. Here’s hoping that mother, father/mother and baby are all doing well. Mazel Tov!

Congratulations to the happy family. I personally think that love makes a family, not necessarily a man and a woman.

  2. rYouit? Says:

This is discusting! I hate that when SHE was on Oprah all Oprah had to say was “oh my, how can a MAN have a baby??” What an idiot! SHE is still just a woman, only a lesbian. Sheesh!

  3. Jennifer Says:

I think these posts should be monitored so we don’t get discriminatory comments like the one that rYouit made.

    Congratulations to the happy couple.

Well, congrats. I think this has been an interesting story and a good example on how far we have come with loving people for who they are, and not caring so much about who they are “supposed” to be. I think, in theory, the story isn’t all that shocking, considering it is a transgendered woman with female reproductive organs, who become pregnant, not a man born as a man, like physically speaking. So yes, he is a man, but he wasn’t before so. . . hmmm, anyway, I’m just glad women are still the only ones who can give birth. Congrats and happiness to the loving family!

Who was the sperm donor? Basically it’s just a woman (who looks like a man) having a child,…no news there, women have been doing it for years,…he/she isn’t the first! And certainly won’t be the last!

I feel that the whole thing is indeed sickening. What’s next? Humans marrying animals and have babies?

  7. It's Trent, Bitch! Says:

sickening? so transgendered people aren’t allowed to have children? do you really find it so easy to equate transgendered people with bestiality? i’m afraid that i find such thinking very ignorant.

  8. Joanne Says:

The reason he did not have his gentital area operated on, is because they cannot YET make a penis. It’s as simple as that. He is not a ‘Lesbian’ because gender identity has nothing to do with who you are attracted too. She/he always felt like a guy.

  9. Joanne Says:

    *genital

  10. Dani Says:

There are so many children in this world who are neglected and unloved. If this couple is going to love their child, then who cares what everyone else thinks. Of course it will not be easy, especially with all the ignorance in this world, but if they are happy and can provide a loving home, then who are we to judge?

I have zero problem with trangendered-ality. Zero. What I have a problem with is people trying to have their cake and eat it too. Make up your mind. If he really was a man stuck in a woman’s body, then why does he feel he is entitled to have a baby with the reproductive organs he didn’t want in the first place?

  12. Yosa Says:

I think this situation is just another example of why we need to stop viewing gender and sexuality in “black” and “white” terms. Everyone has a basic human right to be loved and have a family. Mozel tov to the couple. I hope they enjoy the great and beautiful journey that is raising a child.

I’m not sure being loved qualifies as a basic human right. Clearly, most people desire it, but a “human right?” That’s a stretch.
