Woot! The 5th season of Project Runway debuted on Bravo last night and the new season got off with an old start. We got to meet the new cast earlier this week in photos but got to see them in action in person in last night’s premiere ep. I must admit, a few of the designers turned out to be pretty much the way their photos hinted they might be … some where annoying, some were cute and the overly tanned guy, Blayne, is trying too hard to be this season’s Christian Siriano (but without the same level of talent). For the first challenge, the designers were put to the task of taking on the very first challenge that was presented in the very first episode of season 1 of the show:

After the jump, find out who won the challenge, who got sent home (and rightfully so) and what went down on last night’s ep entitled Let’s Start From The Beginning …
Okay … so the challenge last night was to have the designers shop for materials at a supermarket, the very same supermarket that was used in the premiere episode of season 1 of Project Runway. A challenge like this is meant to spark creativity and to test the designer’s ability to create fashion out of unconventional materials … so of course, pretty much every one ran straight for the tablecloths and other like materials to make their outfits — which totally missed the point of the challenge (which is baffling since it was a challenge they should’ve all seen before). Lame. In the end Kelli was in, Jerry was out and Joe (from Detroit Rock City, I might add) & Korto came up with my fave outfits:

Despite the fact that the use of tablecloths was pretty boring, I really felt that some of those designs looked better than the ones that the judges actually liked. Kelli‘s design (the marble-stained dress with the burnt coffee filters bodice) was inventive and well crafted but I thought kinda fug. The staining turned out better than I thought it would but the coffee filter top was ugly. I think she got the highest marks for her ingenuity (the fasteners were made out of notebook wire!) and I suppose with a challenge like this, that is really what counts. Daniel got love from the judges for using plastic cups, ingenious, but I thought the dress shape was really poor — the model looked misshapen and lumpy — I didn’t like it at all. I thought Joe‘s tablecloth and oven mitt outfit was really cute and I really liked Korto‘s yellow kimono thing … if it were a bit more fitted, I think I would’ve liked it the best (props for using produce, too, tho the lettuce and tomato accents look much better from far away then they do close up). Jerry … oh man, his outfit was just stupid. How he ever thought his design was good, I’ll never know. Seriously, the judges weren’t kidding then they said it looked like it was designed for a serial killer or murderer … but to be honest, I don’t think Dexter would even deign to wear that fugly-ass thing. Stella got real lucky that Jerry‘s first design sucked worse than hers … cuz that trash bag thing was just pitiful. I hate to say it but it was a pretty disappointing start to this new round of competition.
So the new season is underway and we still need to figure out the designers and the tone of the season. This season was shot after the news came out that Project Runway would be moving to Lifetime in season 6 … it’ll be interesting to see if any shades of that information make their way to the screen (ie. will the judges act different? will production suffer?). Also, it’s too early to tell which designers I like best … Joe, from Detroit, is gonna get love from me … he’s got talent and he’s from Detroit, duhvs :) The Blayne kid who loves to tan is already annoying but that may change … it really feels like his attempt at the avant garde is an attempt to be the Christian Siriano but, as I said above, he doesn’t seem to have the same level of talent (his outfit was fugly and not impressive at all creatively, IMHO). Again, it’s too early to tell. Things are only getting started … but I dunno, what do y’all think?

Oh poo.
I FORGOT to watch it.
*googles*
Yea for Project Runway returning to TV. My summer TV doesn’t suck anymore now. I read the Bravo blogs and Jerry still doesn’t get it. His “raincoat” sucked ass! I loved Joe’s dress and I wish we could’ve seen more of it. It’s too early to tell who how this season is going to be. I can’t wait.
I really liked the one blue and red dress that was made out of the rubber ball and the lawn chair fabric
Am I the only one who found it a little disappointing and uncreative that the first ep was just a rehash of season 1? I don’t know if they were trying to make a statement about coming full circle with Bravo or what.
I’m pretty excited to see what the next challenge will be. I hope it doesn’t involve recyclables or plants…
never really watched the series before – but I plan on trying on this season – you’ve got me all curious as to what all the hoopla is about ;o)
Blayne’s failed attempt to have the world know him by his word “luscious” was extremely aNNoying…. I am looking forward to the rest of the season (Project Runway Rules) ; )
I liked that they returned to this challenge – which was one of my favorite. Unfortunately, this season’s designers lacked the creativity to use unconventional materials. I was shocked that so many used tablecloths and/or fabric substitutes.
btw – no one mentioned Keith – WOOF!!!
I had to playback the scene of him laying in bed shirtless!
“Girlicious” will never be the new “Fierce” – Blayne is obnoxious and needs to stop being a Christian poser.
Why do all the homo people have to be so feminine? Ugh.
That Blayne is SO FUCKING ANNOYING.
God it’s so pathetic how hes trying to be like christian.
man there are so many annoying characters this season (blayne especially) It was so obvious he was trying to be christian..which just makes him even more annoying. I loved the vacuum bag skirt, she should’ve made the bodice part out of the same stuff instead of those dumb ass coffee filters. the oven mit thing/noodle skirt was way cute, and i liked the mop top..but her skirt was blah. i dunno how i feel about these designers yet…sigh.
Not all of the homos are effeminate…Keith is gay and I didn’t see a purse fall out of his mouth at any time during last night’s episode. It’s unfortunate that a majority of the gay men featured on reality television tend to be more effeminate, but I believe that has to do more so with the producers. Don’t forget that the majority of Middle America still believes that all of us are limp wristed sissies with lisps, so producers will look for those types of gays when casting. I personally identify more with gay men like Keith (and Daniel, who I didn’t really see as effeminate), as I consider myself to be more masculine.
That’s not to say that any of the more effeminate designers are not in any way talented, because I was very impressed by many of the designs shown from the designers’ portfolios.
But I do agree about Blayne…girl needs to realize that he is not the next Christian Siriano and “girlicious” will never be the next “fierce.” After that Depends-looking outfit he put together last night, he probably will not be lasting very long.
I was actually pretty disappointed with the designers this season. I suppose its because I had high expectations. I expected this season to have as much tallent as last season’s designers. I too had Blayne, I felt like kicking him when I heard him say “girlicious.” All I think about was how the producers will probably keep him on the show just to add some *drama*
I loved the little yellow dress by Wesley and the cute yellow gloves to go with.. I know he used tablecloth but atleast it didn’t look like one and he also used fly swatters and other things. I completely agree about kelli’s dress the bottom part was awesome but the coffee filters on a completely flat model was sooo ug!! Also it’s a competition for the models and I thought maybe 2 of the models were actually decent looking the rest were blah..
I thought the skirt part down on Kelli’s was cute, but that coffee filter top was ill fitting and just ugly. I liked Joe’s too and the one from the girl with the flower in her hair in the beginning. I need to learn everyone’s names yet! Oh, that raincoat outfit looked like something one might wear to give an enema or something. But, at least he tried, IMHO, Stella didn’t even try and should’ve gotten ousted just for that. Even if her trash bag was the right one, her idea would have been the same. And, what in the heck is she wearing all the time? I could not even figure out what that thing Blayne made was. What was that? A bathing suit? It didn’t even gel, the execution was piss poor. Anyway, I’m excited for this.season.
I really thought Korto should have won. They way she incorporated that fresh veggies was fantastic. It was a cute dress with some cool accessories! This seems like it will be a good season. I really enjoyed some of the people. I thought the girl who did they trash bag should have gone home! It sucked!!!
For the record…I DID NOT write that comment above! Whoever did find your moniker! Stop stealing mine and stop writing negative things you ass! From the real Mr. Gyllenhaal!
I was talking about the 8th one from the top! i did write the two above this one!
I agree that Blayne is trying too hard to be Christian, but I kinda like Blayne. I liked the winning dress, from the waist down, the top was so unflattering, but it was cool how she burned the filters. I loveeeeeee Joe. He is so nice and here to win, not for any drama. The loosing design, I agree, really sucked, but I’m surprised, since he seemed to have the most “experience”, in my opinion. I didn’t like how they did the same challenge as Season 1, and what’s up with all the spoilers? It’s ruining the show. I guess Bravo is pretty pissed off that Project Runway is switching to Lifetime. In my opinion, my mom and I were talking, and it would of been cool to do an all-star season, like 4 people from each past season. I mean Bravo has soo much footage im sure from past years, so it would of been cool to use it since im sure they won’t sell it to Lifetime. It would of give people a second chance and since the A-List Awards All-Star challenge got great reviews, it would of gotten amazing reviews if they did an All Star season. Haha, imagine if they brought back like Andrae! Well, I thought it was a good idea. And, I can tell i’m not sure if im going to like this new season, I mean, you can just tell, everyone is going to try to copy everything in previous seasons, didn’t someone ALREADY do a Tim Gunn impression? Give me a break! Steven from Season 4 couldn’t pull that off, in my opinion. Santino is the only one. Bahaha. Anyways, that’s my opinion!
<3 Keith. Please be shirtless for the rest of the competition.
