‘Project Runway’ Shows It’s Not Easy Being ‘Green’

Attention: 'Project Runway' Spoiler Alert Warning
July 24th, 2008

Bravo TV aired the second episode of the 5th season of Project Runway last night and for this ep they introduced a PR challenge first. Not only were the designers not allowed to shop for the materials they needed to use (that task was left up to their models) but they had to work with “green” eco-friendly materials for their entire design. This ep also featured a celebrity guest judge who is “green”-minded … someone I didn’t guess who appear on the show but, once she did reveal herself, made a perfect fit as guest judge … unfortch, her follow-thru and excitement level was severely lacking:

To be honest, I was very surprised at who got eliminated last night … and I was very impressed with a particular designer who is starting to get on my nerves (big time) but managed to pull off a very nice design in the end. After the jump, find out who was in, who was out and what went down on the ep entitled The Grass Is Always Greener

Right off the bat, let me say that I’m very bummed that Wesley got eliminated. While I thought his design was hideous, I am sad to be losing him so soon. I loved his style and I believe he has some great talent — unfortch, we won’t be seeing any more of it from here on out. Suede ended up winning the challenge with a very cute little cocktail dress but his third person speak is driving me insane:

I’m ashamed to admit that I wasn’t all that impressed with the “green”ness of this challenge. I have to be honest and say that I feel like the whole movement seems so clichéd at this point. If they really want to make a “green” statement, they should incorporate the practice in all aspects of the show rather than just one challenge where “green” materials are used. I really think that the recycling challenges make more of a strong point on the eco tip … but that’s just my $0.02. I did like that the models did the shopping for the designers … that was a nice twist. Hands down, I loved Kenley’s design. It was the most chic to me … she really does have talent. I’m surprised that I love her so much … when the cast was unveiled on the Bravo website and her bio photo was missing, I thought for sure she would be one of the early exiters — it seems clear to me now that she may end up as one of the leading contenders. If Suede keeps it up, he may be a contender as well … which may be unfortunate cuz his third person “bisexual” blue hair thing he’s got going on is a smidge annoying. It’s hard to tell which is more irritating — Suede’s third person speak or Blayne’s “licious” speak (tho, to his credit, he was less audacious with his “licious”ness in last night’s ep). Of the two, tho, I think Suede has more talent (to be fair, I didn’t hate Blayne’s 80’s off the shoulder dress — I may be alone here but I thought it was kitschy fun) … his dress was very cool and he deserved to win, tho I would’ve gone with Kenley for the win myself. As I said, I’m bummed that Wesley is dunzo … his departure has lowered the hotness level on the show (and let’s be honest, the hotness level wasn’t all that high to begin with). The designers’ personalities are starting to show … which is good … ‘cuz now we can determine who we love and who we hate ;)

PS: I love me some Natalie Portman but she was totally forgettable. Yawn city. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

I agree with you and the whole green being cliche thing!!! Recycling challenges would make much more sense — like let’s go to a consignment shop and remake some things. Also, they need to be green about other things too. NO WATER BOTTLES!

Ugh I was so disappointed to see Wesley go! I know it was only the second episode but I already had a little crush on him. I was sure it wasn’t going to be him. Boo!

I have to agree that Suede is trying way too hard to stand out with his third person speak. It’s a whole new level of annoying. But at least he’s not recycling old contestants like Jerrell. The first episode he tried to impersonate Santino impersonating Tim Gunn and in this last episode he was trying to be catty for no reason. I think he’s trying to be this seasons bad guy but it’s just coming out as lame. I really hope they both get eliminated soon.

    Love your blog….long time reader!

  3. hilarious duff Says:

wesley why did he have to go?
    he was my favorite.
i’m sad now. his model screwed him over,
    bigtime.

  4. Ali Says:

Was it just me or was Stella’s dress ready for a pole or what?? I hated it and was shocked that the judges were giving her good remarks.

  5. Burgernoodle Says:

Oh, are we still watching this show??

  6. Marisa Says:

Terri should have won! Her navy blue dress was gorgeous and Kenley’s was just full of clown collar. The model looked like Miss Jay from that one season of America’s Next Top Model. Barfy.

I was shocked that Stella’s was in the top three and I liked Blayne’s WAY more than “Suede’s” dress.

I bet his real name is Aloisius or something like that.

  7. kar Says:

i agree with everything you said. i was very mad that wesley left.. from the first episode i had the feeling he would be one of the ones that lasted a long time. not to mention, he was the hottest. and i agree with ali, stella’s dress was hideous. she really needs to leave, leather and lace-up is not real fashion. yuck.

  8. bettina Says:

I love your blog, but I want to point out that for Blayne here were far too many moments of “licious” last night. He calls his apartment people “Team Licious” and referred to Heidi as “Dark Liscious” and I’m sure he did more but I try to ignore him when he speaks because he is so annoying….And Kenley’s dress was far more wearable and beautiful!

  9. Roxster Says:

Blayne’s the most annoying person, and talent or not I would love to see him go just so I don’t have to hear anymore “licious”. He obviously saw how Christian turned Fierce into a brand that even Tim Gunn fell for and is trying to create his own new catch phrase to win over audiences and generate a buzz. And its understandable why given how popular the term Fierce has become, even for non-PR fans. But Blayne’s forcing it so much its painfully obvious and ridiculously annoying (I don’t know what was worse…introducing his garment in episode 1 to Tim as “Girlicious” or having the makeup artists write it on his models leg). But while Fierce may (or may not) be the next catch phrase added to the Oxford English Dictionary, I’d rather be forced to wear Jerry’s psycho killer outfit for a night out on the town then see Blayne’s over-zealous attempts to turn himself into the next Christian Siriano pay off.

  10. Megan Z Says:

I actually think Blayne said “licious” once when his model came in for her fitting before the runway show. He said something like “Hey liciousness.” …What in the world does that even mean?

  11. T Says:

Booooo! That sucks!! Wesley is soooo cute! I love his “sockless” style. I wanted him to go far.

  12. GABE Says:

Gabe hates Suede!! (Suede this Suede that, Suede no like, Suede thinks Suede is lisious) God!! When they show him now, I mute the damn T.V !

  13. Mr. Gyllenhaal Says:

I love that Natalie was the guest judge. It wa a pretty good show I thought. Suede is annoying but his dress was pretty awesome. I really thought Kenley was going to win but wasn’t all that suprised when she didn’t! I think suede is going to be around for a while!!!

  14. Sara Says:

I was so sad when Wesley was eliminated. Hopefully he will go on to bigger and better things. I thought that Kenley should have won her design was flawless. I’m really getting sick of Stella and her leather obsession…I’m over it. Sara thinks that Either she or Suede should go next.
P.S. Love what you have done with the site!!

  15. Rob Says:

I was so sad Welsey was eliminated!
I heard him and Daniel are now dating!

And I loved when Stella was talking about leather and then Blayne was like “My husband is leather” and kept on making leather jokes. Hah.

Next weeks challenge is so obv.
    Look at the commerical.

  16. Veronica Says:

I don’t like suede’s dress at all! I’ll admit the shape of the dress was good but the criss cross of the red and white looks horrible! I thought it looked like a clown vomited on it! I am also surprised but I liked blayne’s dress a lot, oh well..

  17. Elin Says:

Stella’s voice was really irritating last night. Her & her leather face need to go!

    Welsey went home too early

  18. trish Says:

kenley’s design was like Daniel V.’s flower inspired design on season 2.. with the neck part thing.. i like suede’s dress.. it’s hard to make that criss-cross thing.. i am really pissed that wesley went home.. i didn’t get the chance to even appreciate his designs..

  19. Nadia Says:

You forgot to mention how incredibly ANNOYING Stella is! She drives me craaaaaaazy!!!

    Nadia

  20. Grace Says:

Suede and Blayne are def trying too hard to have a “thing”.

Wesley was bad, but the girl in the bottom 2? What was with that dress?

I love that project runway is back so we can get the photo recaps here!!

  21. Molly Says:

i was SO sad to see wesley leave. he was so quiet and polite… RIP wesley!

i’m on team kenley so far!

  22. casey Says:

ALL of them are terrible!!!! this is by far the most annoying cast ever, not to mention that almost every single one of those cocktail dresses were UGLY. i am just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, being that they were not allowed to pick out the fabrics and it seemed like none of the models bought their designers enough of the fabric (judging by the fact that almost everyone’s dress was short and tight). i was shocked that suede won and that stella was in the top. their dresses were some of the ugliest ones there!!! UGH

  23. Paz Says:

The green theme was a joke. It’s basically a cocktail dress challenge, just they had less fabrics to choose from.
Stella’s dress was tacky! And super short. I was shocked when they gave it good remarks.

  24. bee Says:

i love PR…. but u guys have to check out project runway AUSTRALIA…. its super entertaining.

its my new addiction. youtube it guys…. u wont be disappointed… its only like 3 episodes in too… :D

  25. Hector Rocha Says:

I can’t believe Wesley is gone. I love him so much. I think he has such a great talent. It wasn’t the right challenge for him, but I’m looking forward to see him coming out with his own collection at Bryan Park. I’m starting to hate this show. Even though is my favorite, I can’t believe from Nina’s mouth how much she liked Stella’s creation. That girl, doesn’t have talent AT ALL!!! What do you say about SUEDE. He doesn’t have any style to dress, is so annoying, and is a Cristian Siriano wannabe. He wants to be bitchy and funny, and he’s just NOT that! He needs to get it together, and get out of this competition soon, along with Stella.

  26. Kerstin Says:

Totally done with Stella – I bet she’s out next week.

  27. Samantha Says:

I wish Wesley didn’t leave. Stella needs to go ASAP!! All she does is complain and I bet Natalie Portman will not like her once she finds out she uses leather!!!!!!!

P.S. Natalie Portman is beyond amazing.

  28. Kenleigh Says:

    BEYOTCH STOLE MY NAME!!!

  29. Saple Says:

    GO JOE!!!!!

  30. majorguys Says:

Is it me , or did anyone else notice that Stella’s model looked like she was 4 months pregnant??? Too bad Wesley had to go!!! At least we got one shirtless view of him ironing….I think Terry’s dress was the best…just maybe the judges were not feeling the NAVY thing…oh well..

  31. Brooke Says:

I was super sad to see Wesley go. He was so adorable and I truly believe he has a lot of talent. I wasn’t a fan of his dress, but it wasn’t really his fault. I’m really going to miss him. He was just so sweet and cute. I loved him. He was one of my favorites.

Kenley’s dress was my favorite, but I also liked Terry’s. I was surprised the judges put Stella in the top 3 over Terry. I’m actually shocked Stella wasn’t in the bottom 3. Her dress was hideous. I HATE her style.

Oh. And I think Wesley and Daniel are totally cute. :)
