Old ‘Friends’ To Make A New Movie?
In further nostalgic news from the 90’s (try saying that 5 times, fast), there is a new report/rumor going around that the long-anticipated Friends movie might actually become a reality. But, while today’s earlier news concerning Shannen Doherty’s possible return to 90210 comes from the venerable Entertainment Weekly, this Friends report comes from the less-than-venerable Daily Mail … but I’ll still take it :) Emboldened by the huge success of the Sex and the City Movie, it is being reported that Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer are all on board to make the jump to the big screen “within the next 18 months”, again, according to the Mail:

The highly anticipated film production of TV series Friends has finally been given the go-ahead, MailOnline has learned. Cast members Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer will reprise their roles for a big-screen adaptation “within the next 18 months”, according to insiders. The actors have been inspired by the recent success of Sex And The City, which recently hit cinemas worldwide. A source said: “Jennifer, Courteney and the rest of the cast are keen to reprise their roles, under the right circumstances. The box office success of Sex And The City has really got their wheels spinning about how a Friends film could be just as big, if done right. Timing and the script are really important, but now that Courteney and Jen both have production companies, they can potentially get very involved in those decisions.” Talk of a reunion for the loveable gang from New York’s Central Perk has been bandied around Hollywood ever since the show aired its final season in 2004. While Cox, 44, LeBlanc, 40, Perry, 39, Kudrow, 45 and Schwimmer, 41, were believed to be keen on the reunion, Aniston, 39, is believed to have dragged her heels. Now, however, she is keen to move ahead with the project, which will be produced by Warner Bros. The source added: “As the biggest star of the Friends franchise, Jennifer can’t help but look at what’s happened with Sarah Jessica Parker and the Sex And The City film and be a little jealous. What’s held back a Friends movie so far is that people were worried that Jennifer had simply become too famous to play Rachel again. But the truth is that Jennifer is finally willing to do it, and she’d love to work with that whole team of actors and producers again. She says she and Courteney have already talked this summer about what they want out of a Friends movie, and if deals can be made with them, everything else can fall into place rather quickly. It really comes down to money, and I don’t think Jen has a problem with all of the Friends getting huge paydays for the movie. In that sense, it’s Sex And The City all over again. There’s no movie unless you can reunite the whole cast and keep them all happy financially” … The source told MailOnline: “Friends is at the top of the list of properties that can do the same level of business Sex And The City did.”
Okay … first thing, Jennifer Aniston is not “too famous” to play Rachel Green again. If she really believes that is the case then she is sorely mistaken. Until the day she dies, she will be Rachel Green … except with a more prominent scowl and not as funny. Second thing, they need to move on this movie, like, now. If they can really pull it all together in “the next 18 months” then that would be perfect. Third thing, much like with the SaTC movie, I have NO IDEA what they can do with the Friends characters to make a compelling 2-hour movie that will satisfy all the fans … but, the SaTC movie did just that — they pulled it off flawlessly. It is my sincere hope that the Friends folk can do the same. While I’m excited at the prospect of this project actually getting off the ground, I’m not really gonna get all excited until there is some sort of confirmation from either the movie studio or someone who might be involved in the project. It would be great to see the gang on the big screen again … I hope it actually happens.

Hhhhmmm…. don’t get me wrong… I was a HUGE Friends fan back in the day, but the prospect of a movie just doesn’t get me all tingly like SATC did. Maybe I need to watch some of the repeats that come on a zillion times a day to get in the spirit…

IF (stress IF) the Jen Aniston ‘too famous’ thingy is true, what a slap in the face to her fans of the character that made her so loved in the first place! I really doubt “The Breakup” (and the like) really won over legions of new JenJen lovers. Let’s hope that whole thing isn’t true, and she never said anything like that.

I think a movie would be great…but David Schwimmer has venomously said previously that he doesnt want to portray Ross Gellar again. Would be interesting to see if his failed career post friends will change his mind.

I’m a HUGE Friends fan and it drives my husband crazy… But I was thinking of a possible story-line… Maybe a Ross and Rachel wedding?? I don’t know! It’d be awesome if it really happens!

Venemously or vehemently, Tammy?
Also, how many times can the word “keen” be used in an article? Who ARE these writers?!

OMG i love Friends just as much as the next person, but they didn’t leave the series as open ended as SATC. Sister Mary Romano has an earful of all that could go wrong on celebrity prayer list

OMG I hope this is true. I love friends.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure how true it is. I would think more reputable tabloids would have picked it up if it was…
but I hope it is!!!

they should get ballsy and make it “R” rated.

I’m with most people here – I loved the show and watch it over and over – but I just can’t think of possible story lines and how it could be that great. Even if it is crap, I’ll definitely watch it. I wonder how much they’ll make for the film? …30…40 million each?

Speaking as a straight guy with waaaay too much time on his hands, I’ve got to say that you guys aren’t trying hard enough regarding a storyline for a Friends movie.
Ross & Rachel get married by Joey at Thanksgiving. Hijinks ensue that don’t even remotely resemble the movie “American Wedding.”
Pure speculation on my part, but come on, we all know the characters and due to the slightly open-ended nature of the series finale, this is the logical way to go. If it isn’t the spine of the movie, then Marta Kaufmann needs to let someone else write it.
And you’ll notice that I’m not speculating on any Chandler/Monica storyline or Phoebe storyline as while I have my ideas, the characters are just too idiosyncratic to mandate that their stories *have* to go in the direction that Ross & Rachel’s does.
Also, if there’s going to be a Friends big-screen movie, then Warner has absolutely no excuse not to make a small-screen or direct-to-DVD movie finale for Gilmore Girls, since well — darn that Kim (hee!), ending the show single-handedly, without an actual finale for Lorelai and Luke’s storyline!

Learn to read, folks, it said “People thought she was too famous”. Nowhere did it state she had said such a thing.
Cheers.

Rob…a man after my own heart…I was so mad about the ending of Gilmore Girls. I was a huge fan and watched religously and I was so mad at the end thinking “What a waste” The could not have ended that show any worse. I would like to see a Friends movie…I’m just not going to get all kinds of excited about it..I can’t see it happening.

OMG I go for this is true. I enjoy friends. Unluckily, I’m not surprised how true it is. I would believe more good tabloids would have blamed it up if it was so then I will think.
