In an interview that was broadcast on Good Morning America this morning, while promoting the release of her new album Breakout and her latest Hannah Montana movie, Miley Cyrus addressed (again) the controversy that ensued after she appeared in the June issue of Vanity Fair magazine exposing her bare back. Miley admitted that the photo was a “mistake” and came about as a result of “trying to get things done, and maybe look for an older audience”:

Teen pop sensation Miley Cyrus is stepping back into the spotlight, promoting her new album “Breakout” and calling the provocative photos of her published in June’s Vanity Fair magazine a “mistake.” The revealing photos caused an uproar and threatened to tarnish the 15-year-old’s squeaky-clean image when they were released back in April. “I think I was just in a stage where I was just trying to get things done, and maybe look for an older audience. I was working with a big magazine just trying to go with what they were saying,” Cyrus told “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts, speaking in an exclusive interview for the first time since the Vanity Fair photo shoot. Cyrus described the ensuing criticism that she faced as a “hard time,” and said she now “knows what it’s like to have people talk about you like you’re kind of iron. People need to remember that I am young and that I do have feelings, and I’ll do the same thing for them. Anyone who was 15 years old can’t say they haven’t made a mistake. So I think it’s just normal,” she said.
It’s interesting that she would bring up this issue again after it caused her so much pain and embarrassment a couple of months ago … but, when you’re promoting an album, well, I guess you do what you can to get the job done. My criticism of the whole thing wasn’t that Miley was a bad person or even that the photo was too risqué … I have a hard time with the fact that both of her parents were at the photoshoot with her (her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, even appeared in a photo with her), that they had no problem with the pose or the photo when it was shot and then immediately tried to place the blame solely on the magazine and photographer Annie Leibovitz once Miley‘s conservative fanbase became outraged. And now, the Miley Cyrus promo machine has no problem trudging up the controversy for their own promotion. See, the girl may be 15 and she may make mistakes as we all do but she’s also pretty savvy for the Entertainment biz — no publicity is bad publicity. At least she finally took on the blame for the VF photo fallout … it’s convenient that she is doing so now while she’s trying to sell albums, tho.

i don’t think the photo was too risque….although her lips looks weird, as does the expression on her face. personally, i think its an ugly photo.
I’m so sick of this kid! No wonder she’s making mistakes regarding her sexuality, look at those parents: count the bastards between them. And she looks like she’s pushing 30 rather than 16. She’ll end up an unwed teen just like JL – must be a Country Thang – ya’ll.
Good, can we leave her alone now and let her grow up and make mistakes and do dumb shit like we ALL did?
And I agree with post 1 – I hated the picture as well.
I can’t stand her. She is sick of that picture? What about all the semi-naked pictures she takes on her cell phone? Get over it.
Her parents left the shoot before this pic was taken. Her Dad left her with ‘handlers’ clearly a mistake. They were not there when this picture was taken.
they probably only made a big deal about the pic because of how horrible it turned out! i bet if she actually looked good in it, they wouldnt have said anything.
her parents were there. the photo was not that risque. i hate that they tried to make annie leibovitz out to be some kind of kiddie pornographer. it was all so stupid.
Yeah but you add any hint of nudity to a 15 year old and people will rightfully kick up a stink because you have to send out the message that it’s not ok to view. She’s a kid for god’s sake.

well first, her dad wasnt there, he left early. apparently only her grandma had seen it and approved of it but who knows what really happened with that. honestly, i dont think its appropriate for a 15 year old to pose like that, its not even a hint of nudity it alludes to the fact she is naked underneath there and since her fan base is primarily young preteens you have to take that into consideration as to what they will think.
they are trying to deflect from those phone camera vids of her that just got jacked.
this photo isn’t that serious – wtf!!
UGH! I’d like her more if she just said ‘screw all of you guys. it’s clearly more art than porn. shut up and get over it.’
TEAM SELENA!
Blah blah I don’t see what is the big appeal with her. She’s okay..a little too hyper actually. And I don’t even understand why these pics are getting her the bad press..it SHOULD be the other ones around the web where she shows herself making provacative poses with bras, panties, and bathing suits. Those nasty poses are the ones she should really get bad press for because she willingly took them herself and posted them and are the more scandalous kind that nasty old men enjoy…so I don’t get how this girl got so famous and why no one mentions the much more scandalous photos she has out over this Vanity Fair shoot.
All the Disney/Nickolodean brats annoy me. Disney needs to quit telling these kids that they’re talented. These kids need to GO TO SCHOOL.
Parents equally need to be better role models for their kids, so they don’t HAVE to use some messed up teenage character on a television as one. God.
I think that’s an awful photo of her. She looks old, tired and greasy. I’d call that a mistake too.
How is Miley posting pictures on her MySpace any different from other kids her age doing the same thing?
…and now she wants the lead role in “Undiscovered Gyrl”?!!! That little girl is acting waaaaay to old for her age. If she lands the lead role in the movie I mentioned above…there would be so much nudity in it, it wouldn’t be funny. Hell, she’s no where near 18..dont even see how she could consider that adult role. It just can’t happen.
And to the person that said she posted the more ‘nasty’ pics of her….that’s false. She didn’t post them. Understand that when you take pictures with your cellphone, they aren’t just stored on your phone….they are stored on servers that your provider has (Verizon, AT&T…etc). Hackers can get into those servers and expose pictures and videos from celeb’s cell phones. This happened with Paris and Fred Durst to name a couple…
What the hell is the big deal? It’s not like she’s bare ass naked or anything! Jesus, this is bigger than the Venessa Hudgens nude photo scandel!
she looks likes she’s been drinking red kool-aid or somethin… and she’s about to puke.
i always thought that Miley looked like a porn star…from day one…i think this is a very bad picture. I mean that in the sense that she looks like a emancipated homeless person…I don’t see what the big deal is, its not sexy or provocative at all… and for all those people who claim they know who was there when the picture was taken…shut up! You weren’t there. Who cares if her dad was there or not…her self taken cell shots are wayyyyyy more “child porn” than this. No photog is ever going to want to take her picture due to this, so hopefully that means her carreer will be short lived *fingers crossed*
