Fashion Forward … Make That ‘Left Wing’
Hockey + Vogue magazine = Sean Avery

It looks like someone else is lookin’ to give David Beckham a run for the title of most fashionable sports star. Sean Avery, Left Wing for the New York Rangers hockey team, has such a love of fashion that he thought it would be fun to take an internship at Vogue magazine. And, because he did such a great job as an intern, he was promoted to guest editor of mensvogue.com in just a few short weeks. Now, I’m not entirely sure what Avery‘s fashion pedigree is or what makes him qualified to take on such a lofty position at such an esteemed fashion magazine … but I love it nonetheless. Here are a few pics of Sean Avery hanging out in the closet (as it were) at the offices of Men’s Vogue magazine:

Looks like hockey star and Vogue intern Sean Avery is climbing the publishing ladder with remarkable agility, advancing from lowly intern to guest editor at mensvogue.com in just a few short weeks. In an online diary for the site, the New York Ranger gets shirtless in the Vogue fashion closet and dishes about his unlikely passion. “To me it’s simple: I like clothes. Always have,” he says. “I don’t watch sports. I don’t read about sports … Over breakfast in hotels when the Rangers are on the road, I read the Style section in The New York Times.” And Sean, who swapped his million-dollar Rangers salary for minimum wage (for the summer, at least), reveals that money’s not everything, waxing philosophical about the creative reward he experienced assisting on his first photo shoot. “As I watched the shoot progress,” he writes, “I had to wonder: Was the feeling this designer had — the pride of having his creations shot for the pages of Vogue — anything like the feeling I had after we beat the Devils in round one? … Was a young woman’s anticipation of a night on the town in her favorite new dress just a different version of a 12-year-old boy watching his favorite player No. 16 dominate New Jersey in five games? The world may never know — but that’s what I think.”

OMG … I love this guy. It sounds like this stint for Vogue magazine is the perfect job for a professional hockey player that neither watches nor reads about sports and pontificates about the connection between a woman’s anticipation of a night on the town and a young boy’s fascination with watching hockey. Seriously … he is my new favorite person ever. But wait … there are even more photos to be had of the stocky Left Wing New York Ranger “working” at the offices of Men’s Vogue

The short pants! Ye gods, I love the short pants:

So … just how does a professional hockey player go about securing an internship at (arguably) the greatest fashion magazine in the world? Why, he writes the head honcho herself, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and asks for a job:

Earlier this year — just before the playoffs, actually — I wrote to the editor in chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, and expressed my desire to intern for the magazine once my team won the Stanley Cup. After just a couple of days I got the answer I was looking for.

Yes, fortunately for Avery, the Rangers got cut from the play-offs (and the mighty Detroit Red Wings would go on to win the Stanley Cup this year) so he was able to realize his fashion dreams … and just what did Sean Avery learn from his experience working at Vogue?

What did I learn over the last month? Or, as everybody seems to want to know, What’s working at Vogue really like? Here’s what it comes down to: I make millions of dollars a year at a “job” that I consider to be pure fun. The people at Vogue don’t have that kind of salary. What they do have is a group of people working creatively and relentlessly because of their strong passion and love for fashion. I would challenge you to find another workplace — outside of sports or nursing — that has that. I hope to play hockey for several years to come. But after that I want to be a part of something creative — either styling or editing at a magazine. Being guest editor for Mensvogue.com this week is really the first time that I’ve been responsible for putting content together myself. And it’s opened up a new interest that I didn’t even know I had. So that’s what I learned. And if you’d like to learn something, consider this: If you feel like teasing this hockey player about an obsession of his that you might think is a little unusual, go right ahead. Just know that you may get your ass kicked by a very expensive pair of shoes — and that they’ll probably match both my belt and my shirt.

Again, I say, I love this man. You have to give him props for going after his dream, no matter what others may say about it (I imagine he can look forward to lots of ribbing from his New York Rangers teammates as they hang out in the locker room), and for staying true to himself. A lot of people could learn a lesson from Sean Avery.

  2. liz says:

Trent i love your blog and everything but hockey sense you do not have….sean avery is a tool. the league had to make a rule up for him to combat his ‘douchness’..ugh i hate that guy.

  3. Jessika says:

Being that I am a terribly deep hockey fan. Sean Avery is a disgrace to the game. He makes the NHL look like a league of douche bags. Oh and have you heard about the “Sean Avery Rule” thats now in effect because he likes to hog the goal?

He should get sent back to Canada, not like they want him anyway.

  4. Pooja says:

Man, Sean Avery is such a jackass. He may look decent, but damn watch his interviews and you will see how much of an asshole he is. Seriously, I lost all of my respect (which was quite a miniscule amount) for him when he did that whole shielding business with Martin Brodeur. Complete disgrace.

  5. el says:

I know nothing about this man, nor do I know anything about hockey, though I must say, his “manpris” are hilarious!

  6. Stefanie says:

From a die hard hockey fan, SEAN AVERY IS A DISGRACE TO THE NHL!! no team wants him! I heard the Ranger’s don’t even want to sign him again so it’s a good thing he has a fall back career. The way he acted in the playoffs to Brodeur is an absolute DISGRACE!! If cheating is his idea of winning then mazel tov to him. Trent your awesomness but seriously stick with commenting on celebs unless your going to do your homework on the NHL. This guy is an ABSOLUTE disgrace, it’s a wonder Brodeur didn’t punch him in the handshake line, let alone not shake his hand. And don’t worry Canada we don’t blame you for Brodeur but can you please let us keep Crosby to balance it out ;)

  7. Stefanie says:

TYPE-O oh my bad we don’t blame you for AVERY lololol omg, no we LOVE Brodeur. oh god now all the avery fans are gonna be like haha. oh well.

  8. Kelly says:

haha i love how sean avery assumes that he would be anyones favorite player! what a joke! he was that ecstatic to beat the devils? what, only to be eliminated in 5 himself the very next round? and as for hottness, i’d take that sexy piece of man MARTIN BRODEUR anyday!! yummyyyyy

  9. kar says:

from what i’ve heard, sean avery goes above and beyond just being an asshole on the ice. it’s one thing to be an agitator, and many agitators do it well but he is much worse than that. i’ll admit that he is a good player but i would never want him on my team. and i agree with the person who said that many NHL players are into fashion. avery thinks he’s so original and different for liking fashion but many other players have their own clothing lines and stores, etc. he’s not that awesome.

  10. Allison says:

I was so happy when I read the comments on this post, because I came on here all ready to tell everyone and Trent what this guy is really about. Thank God other people have already ripped Sean apart.

It made me stare at the screen aghast to see the words “I love this man” written about Sean. I know Trent posts about hockey from time to time when it has to do with the Red Wings (and rightfully so, it’s his hometown team), but I feel it is my duty as a person who loves hockey perhaps more than he loves gossip to tell Trent that this is not a man who should be idolized, or promoted. Trent: this is not a man to be admired, no matter what shoes he’s wearing. He is all the previous comments’ words and so much more. Firstly, he is a racist; he once called a black opponent a monkey during a game. He has made fun of an opposing player because that player had cancer. He was mentioned as possibly having ties to that prostitute that was with Eliot Spitzer. He has been voted the most hated man in the NHL by his peers. He has been fined for his actions and off-ice comments numerous times, and his own teammates have no respect for him. His team’s backup goalie this past season said that if Avery ever did what he did to Brodeur to him, that he would knock all his teeth out and more. This man is the epitome of cocky, and he’s not even all that good. This man is one of the few players who continually give hockey a bad rep. The vast majority in the hockey world, for good reason, do not respect him and I hope you consider twice before glorifying him again.

  11. Lexifer says:

I just had to comment on this one, and I will be regurgitating what most of the other posters have said.

First, to Sarah, while he may be a decent guy in your opinion, his antics on and off the ice make him the most classless player in the NHL.

His comments and antics towards Brodeur were disgusting, but typical of this lowlife’s behaviour. He is the biggest douchebag currently in the NHL (and considering how much I hate Downie for his dirty hit on McAmmond that’s saying a lot!) , and a disgrace to my country, and to the game. We definitely do NOT want him back in Canada. He can rot in New York.

I hope you do a little more research on the next person you proclaim your favourite person. (And likening him to Beckham is a joke, Beckham’s an amazing soccer player, Avery is average at best. )

Fans and fellow players hate the guy for a reason, and I’m glad so many of you spoke up and posted about what a piece of crap he really is.

  12. Lexifer says:

    gah!

*And likening him to Beckham in anyway

  13. Ju-Ju Bean says:

Agree with most comments. He’s an instigator and not a good name for most hockey lovers.

  14. kelly says:

    TEAM MARTY!!! :)

  15. Jenni V. says:

Hmmm, a fashion-obssessed guy in a closet? Jock or not maybe he needs come OUT of it! ;)

  16. Panti Christ says:

I love the dress shorts – now I just need to figure out how can I get my guy to wear that outfit!

  17. las says:

Okay, I’ve just renewed my interest in hockey……hmm hmm

  18. Amy says:

Sean Avery is one of the biggest goons in hockey and pne of the biggest jerks to boot. We are talking about a guy who said he doesn’t like to play in Toronto (he was born just outside of Toronto) because he doesn’t like hockey obsessed fans well I hate to break it to him but those are the people that buy tickets and if doesn’t like fans like that then I think he should stay away from Hockey and definatly out of Canada.

  19. Leigh says:

As another one of the many hockey fans I can honestly say that Sean Avery is a disgrace to hockey. I loved the Rangers my entire life but when they got this idiot on their team they went from playing a professional game to ‘IM NOT TOUCHING YOU, IM NOT TOUCHING YOU’
Maybe Avery should stick with fashion since he seems to love undressing the ladies! Working at Vogue he at least wont make a joke of the sport of hockey!
