Elvis Presley: Behind The Scenes

The Daily Mail has published a slew of never-before-seen candid photos of Elvis Presley shot early on in his career by photographer Alfred Wertheimer (solely in black and white because his record company, RCA, didn’t want to waste color film on him) which are exactly the kind of pics that would’ve made their way around the blogs if there had been such a thing during Elvis‘s time. Here are a few of the candid and intimate pics of the King of Rock ‘N Roll, Elvis Presley:

Elvis Presley remains the most famous and most loved rock star of all time. But for almost all of his 21 years in the spotlight, until his death in 1977 at the age of 42, he remained a distant enigma to his fans. Surrounded by a mob of minders, he hardly ever gave interviews and virtually the only published photographs of him were those carefully selected by his manager, ‘Colonel’ Tom Parker, to show Elvis in a wholesome light. But at the very beginning of his career, when his first hit, Heartbreak Hotel, was bounding up the U.S. charts, things were different. Wanting all the publicity they could get for their new singer, Elvis’s record company, RCA, hired freelance photographer Alfred Wertheimer to spend a few weeks following the young star around. So, in March 1956, Wertheimer went to work. Meeting Elvis at a New York TV studio, he later hung around his hotel suite, observed him recording Don’t Be Cruel and Hound Dog, photographed him alone and unnoticed on the New York streets, and then went out on tour with him where the groupies were already beginning to line up. He shot almost 4,000 black-and-white, fly-on-the-wall frames of the singer on the very cusp of unimaginable fame, many of which have rarely been seen … It was the last time the private Elvis, the ‘real’ Elvis, who was even prepared to have the photographer follow him into his bathroom and bedroom, would be caught on camera in this way. By the early summer of 1956, a veil had fallen between Elvis and his fans. Parker had decided no one from the media would ever get this close to his star again. From that moment, Elvis entered a cocoon, locked out from the real world by his enormous fame and his manipulative manager. But why were all Wertheimer’s photographs in black and white? Didn’t he take any colour shots? The answer will surprise. No, he didn’t. “Don’t waste colour film on him,” Wertheimer was told by the RCA publicity department. Colour stock was expensive, and as the record bosses had decided Elvis was probably just a flash in the pan, it would be a needless extravagance.

Had there been blogs back in the day, I imagine they’d have much to say about Elvis in his bathing suit (ZOMG! Elvis looks so hawt in his shorty shorts!) or brandishing a gun (Elvis has gone all G-Unit with his new toy) or his argyle socks (The Big E would fit in perfectly on Gossip Girl). I’m not a big Elvis fan by any means but these are fascinating pics. I imagine there must be many more intimate photos of the man out there … somewhere. If these pics are just coming out, what else is waiting to be unveiled? I find it so interesting that there is still much that we can learn about an icon that has been loved and adored for decades. I wonder if there are any more half-nekkid pics comin’ our way?

Well, more like their 'Kabbalah On'
Madonna And Co. Get Their ‘Church’ On

With rumors swirling at a fever pitch that Madonna‘s marriage to Guy Ritchie is (yet again) on the rocks, it makes sense that Maddy would want to regroup and center herself at her place of worship. Actually, Madonna makes it a habit of attending services at the Kabbalah Centre of whatever city she’s in on a weekly basis but maybe this weekend’s visit is especially necessary for her considering the reports going around about the alleged dissolution of her marriage. Here are a few pics of Madonna, her children Lourdes, Rocco & David Banda and her daughter’s father Carlos Leon making their way into the Kabbalah Centre in NYC last night:

With no wedding ring on her finger and no husband in sight, Madonna and her three children – and Carlos Leon, 11-year-old daughter Lourdes’s biological dad – visited Manhattan’s Kabbalah Centre Friday night for Sabbath services and returned again on Saturday. So where was Guy Ritchie, rumored to be splitting with Madonna? British tabloid reports had him in London, but headed to New York this weekend. Britain’s Sun has an unnamed source saying Ritchie seeks to keep the couple’s marriage going, although Madonna is focused on rehearsals for her upcoming world tour. On Thursday, it was reported in the London Times Madonna had consulted noted divorce British attorney Fiona Shackleton, who had represented Paul McCartney and Prince Charles in their bitter divorces from, respectively, Heather Mills and Princess Diana. On Friday night, Madonna’s group [arrived at the Kabbalah Centre] in three waves … The service had just about ended, with a dinner about to begin. Madonna stayed some 20 minutes before leaving with Rocco and David for her home on Central Park West, according to a source. On Saturday, Madonna and her three children returned to the center for services. Her presence didn’t create any kind of stir, as congregants gave her hardly any notice. With Lourdes at her side, Madonna sat in a front-row seat, wearing a black baseball cap and tight black T-shirt. David, in a white baseball cap and Rocco sporting a Yankees cap, spent much of the time playing quietly with some other children on the floor of the sanctuary. A bar mitzvah took place, and at its conclusion Rocco joined all the congregants in throwing Sunkist fruit gem candies at the bar mitzvah boy. At the service’s conclusion, Lourdes wrapped her arms around her mother’s neck and gave her a big, long hug.

People magazine also reports that Maddy is in NYC right now to prepare for her upcoming Sticky & Sweet World Tour, sticking to a regiment where she works out at home in the morning before heading out to a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to rehearse with her dancers for the tour. I don’t imagine that all the speculation about her marriage helps out with all of the stuff she’s got going on in her life these days but I’m not ready to jump aboard the divorce bandwagon just yet. Madge and Guy have been rumored to be heading for divorce for years so these latest reports just sound like more of the same. In any event, Madonna‘s got work to do and she’s gonna do it, no matter what difficulties come her way.

... and out of her top
Amy Winehouse Slips Up

While Amy Winehouse managed to successfully pull herself together enough to perform for Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebration concert in Hyde Park, London last night, she was unsuccessful in keeping one of her nipples entirely tucked away inside her top … try not to be shocked, will you?

Granted her entire boob didn’t pop out of her dress but she still managed, in my estimation, to join the hallowed ranks of the esteemed celebrity members of the nip-slip club. After the jump, an uncensored picture of Amy‘s slip up …

The TV Guide
Delayed Gratification

The good news is that I made it safe and sound to Detroit, MI last night … the bad news is that my 2 hour flight turned into a 6 hour nightmare. Remember all that weather I talked about missing when I was in NYC? Yeah, scratch that. Because of the weather and the insane ineptness of Northwest Airlines, my flight got delayed by 2 hours and then upon arrival, my journey was further delayed by a 35 minute wait on the tarmac and then another 35 minute wait for the luggage to be removed from the plane. I should’ve arrived in Detroit last night at 10pm … instead I didn’t get to my parents house until 1:30am.

Thankfully, I brought along David Sedaris‘s new book When You Are Engulfed in Flames and that was my saving grace. I read about 80% of the book thus far and it kept me in stitches the entire, miserable trip last night:

I haven’t read all of Sedaris‘s books but I deffo plan to. I kept laughing out loud all night long … let me tell you, this book kept me from wanting to die.

This evening, I’m meeting up with Sarah and Mark for dinner (there is talk of going to Little Tree) and then we’re prolly gonna head out to see Reggie’s band play later on … but not before I spend some time with my folks this afternoon. It’s nice to be home :)

Comes of age in Sin City
Ed Westwick Turns 21

Gossip Girl star (and frontman of the band The Filthy Youth) Ed Westwick, who turned 21 years old yesterday, celebrated in style at TAO nightclub at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV last night … here are a few pics from his fancy shindig:

It doesn’t appear that any of Eddie‘s GG castmates trekked out to Sin City for his birthday party but I’m sure he had himself a great time nonetheless. 21 should be a good year for Mr. Westwick … he’s got himself a hit show, a band to front and prolly all the lurvin’ he can handle (tho, he denies handling any of that lurvin’ from his co-star and roommate Chace Crawford, unfortch). Happy Birthday, Ed … your time is now, enjoy it!

Thank Gawd!
It’s A ‘Jungle’ Out There

Gossip Girl isn’t the only TV show that is filming second season scenes for upcoming eps in NYC these days … production on the NBC show Lipstick Jungle (which I didn’t watch last season) has gotten underway on the streets of NYC (the East Village, to be exact) where scenes between Kim Raver (ex-Audrey Raines on 24) and co-star Robert Buckley (current Hottie McHotster) were shot on a public basketball court this week. Considering that Robert looks this good while shirtless, I think I’m gonna have to start watching the show from now on:

Oh yeah … I deffo see the appeal of watching a show like this. I don’t even care what is going on between the characters … as long as it keeps going on with as little clothing as possible. After the jump, a bunch more photos of just Robert Buckley playing basketball … alone … sweaty … and sans shirt …

The folks behind 'The Real World' in talks to take over production
Big Changes Ahead For ‘Project Runway’

Ok … try not to panic. Well … try not to panic too much. Variety is reporting that Bunim-Murray Productions (the folks who brought us The Real World & Road Rules for MTV and, more recently, Living Lohan for E!) is “close to signing on as producers” for the upcoming sixth season of Project Runway when it debuts on its new network (Lifetime) this November. This isn’t necessarily the most horrible news ever … but it is disheartening that such a drastic change may completely destroy the best competitive reality TV show to ever exist … which, come to think of it, would be the most horrible news ever:

Bunim-Murray is close to signing on as the new producers behind “Project Runway.” The “Real World” producer has been in talks with The Weinstein Co. for weeks about taking over the gig in time for the hit reality show’s sixth season – and first on Lifetime. Magical Elves, which originated the show for the Weinsteins (and their former Miramax label) at Bravo, recently sealed a production deal with NBC Universal (Daily Variety, May 5). Because of their commitment there, they won’t be making the move to Lifetime (where the show bows in November). Bunim-Murray is no stranger to Lifetime, having recently produced “America’s Psychic Challenge” for the cabler. Company’s other recent credits include E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and “Living Lohan.” It also produces “Bad Girls Club” for Oxygen. In choosing Bunim-Murray to take over the franchise, Weinstein Co. and Lifetime went with a company that knows the reality space well – having produced 21 seasons of “The Real World.” In the competition space, its credits include the music shows “Making the Band” and “Born to Diva” … Beyond the production company shift, “Project Runway” already promises to look dramatically different on Lifetime – which shelled out $150 to snag the show – as it’s shifting production from New York to Los Angeles. The faces aren’t changing, however: Host Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn and judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia are all signed to return … “Project Runway’s” fifth and final season on Bravo, set to air this summer, will be the last under the auspices of Magical Elves.

On the plus side, Bunim-Murry Productions are responsible for arguably the first reality TV show in existence (many people, me included, contend that the first season of The Real World heralded the birth of the genre) which proves they have much experience. Then again, that show has kinda lost its edge and has taken a turn for the worse in recent years (I think it started getting bad when the show went to Hawaii and went straight into the toilet when it went to Las Vegas — something that they’ve done twice already). If they put the designers in confessionals, I’m out. I swear, I’ll be done with the show. I’m trying to stay as positive as I can but the thought of so much change really has me worried. Pretty much everyone thinks that a new production company and a new network is going to kill the show. I hope and pray that those people are wrong … but my worry alert level has just been upped to HIGH.

Hillary Clinton is on Team Obama
The Democrats Unify For Change

Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama came together in a very public show of unity in the very small town of Unity, NH (where, during the primary season in New Hampshire, Clinton won 107 votes and Obama won 107 votes) yesterday to show the Democratic party and the country as a whole that they are now on the same team … the team that intends to win back the White House come November. Here are a few photos from yesterday’s unity rally in Unity, NH:

Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton came to this tiny town of Unity on Friday for their first public appearance after a bitter primary fight. Less certain was whether Unity would come to them. “We had a spirited dialogue,” acknowledged Mrs. Clinton, speaking first before a crowd of roughly 3,000, many laughing. She was referring to the presidential nomination campaign, not the extended time the former rivals spent together Friday en route to the premiere of what the Obama campaign hopes will be a long-running buddy movie, at least through November. “That was the nicest way I could think of phrasing it,” Mrs. Clinton added, to more laughter. Unity was both the venue and the watchword of the heavily choreographed event, held on the grounds of an old elementary school, adjoined by fields of wildflowers. Event organizers were hoping to evoke the feel of a latter-day Woodstock — only with better weather, more portable toilets and no skinny-dipping. It was left to the main acts, Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton, to supply the peace and love. “Unity is not only a beautiful place, as we can see, it’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it?” Mrs. Clinton said while Mr. Obama sat on a stool, nodding in agreement. A few minutes later, Mr. Obama said of his vanquished rival, “I know firsthand how good she is, how tough she is, how passionate she is, how committed she is.” Woodstock or no, Unity at least provided the ultimate festival for students of political body language. Mr. Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, and Mrs. Clinton appeared arm in arm, waving to a cheering crowd. U2′s “Beautiful Day” blared over loudspeakers, sputtering out for a few nervous seconds before recovering. Mr. Obama’s too-long blue tie went nicely with Mrs. Clinton’s blue pantsuit … The Unity spirit was every bit in keeping with that of recent days. Mrs. Clinton returned Tuesday to the Senate and spoke of her commitment to campaign for Mr. Obama. The two held a joint fund-raiser in Washington on Thursday night, and later in the evening, Mr. Obama’s ever-present “body man,” Reggie Love, was seen dining in Georgetown with his Clinton counterpart, Huma Abedin, and two other people. On Friday, Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama arrived simultaneously at an airport in Washington, where they exchanged a kiss and smiled as they stepped onto a chartered plane. They chatted through the 70-minute flight, sitting side by side, and continued the conversation during a 60-minute bus ride to Unity. As has been well chronicled, this remote town near the Vermont border was chosen not just for its Hollywood name, but also for the perfect split of votes cast in the New Hampshire primary — 107 for each candidate. “Divine intervention,” explained Jeanne Shaheen, a former New Hampshire governor and now a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate. Less well known is that the town of Unity was nearly torn asunder by a land dispute in the 18th century. Then called Buckingham, it was rechristened Unity in 1764 after the conflict was resolved. Democrats were seeking a similar rapprochement Friday, and both principals were very much with the program. “I hope you’ll work as hard for Senator Obama as many of you did for me,” Mrs. Clinton said, directing her remarks to her supporters, some of them with Hillary T-shirts and placards. Mr. Obama said, “Hillary and I may have started with separate goals in this campaign, but we made history together” … “We have to make it a priority in our lives to elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States,” Mrs. Clinton told her supporters, including many who came with their own checks for Mr. Obama’s campaign. “This was a hard-fought campaign,” she said. “That’s what made it so exciting and intense and why people’s passions ran so high on both sides. But we are a family, and we have an opportunity now to really demonstrate clearly we do know what’s at stake, and we will do whatever it takes to win back this White House.” Mr. Obama responded in a similar spirit. “For 16 months, Senator Clinton and I have shared the stage as rivals,” he said. “But, today, I couldn’t be happier and more honored and more moved that we’re sharing this stage as allies.” He largely stuck to his standard stump speech, sprinkled heavily with “Hillarys” and “Unitys.” “Thank you, Senator Hillary Clinton; thank you, New Hampshire,” he said, and the candidates rejoined at the podium for more synchronized waving. After a few seconds, Mrs. Clinton disappeared down some back steps, leaving Mr. Obama on stage by himself.

Finally … the day I’ve longed for has finally come at last. I make it no secret that I am rooting and will work for a Democratic Party win in November and altho I was on Team Hillary during the primary portion of the campaign, I am wholeheartedly on Team Obama. I feel it is imperative that the Democrats win back the Presidency in the coming election and I can’t even convey how THRILLED I am that we are on the verge of electing our first President of color. I honestly wasn’t sure I’d ever see such a possibility in my lifetime (I always hoped) but now we are on the verge of that reality. It’s a very exciting time for the United States … I look forward to bearing witness to history when Barack Obama becomes our next President in November :)
