The GI Joe Movie Gets A Title

And a few posters, too!
Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Thanks to the industrious folks at the Dutch site Film Blog, who brought along their trusty cameras to the Cinema EXPO in Amsterdam this week, we now know that the new live-action GI Joe movie (which is set for release next year) will be titled GI Joe: Rise of Cobra. This title is prominently featured on a few new posters for the movie which were snapped at the Cinema EXPO event. Here is the poster which features Sargent Duke Hauser, played by Channing Tatum:

Woot! This poster looks great! It’s the perfect look for the live-action version of GI Joe. I’ve mentioned before my fears that a live-action movie version of the GI Joe cartoon might be disappointing but everything that I’ve seen thus far has waylaid those fears. I love the casting, I love the costuming and I love the title of the movie. After the jump, check out two more posters which feature Sienna Miller as The Baroness and Ray Park as Snake Eyes

The US Supreme Court Defines The Right To Bear Arms

Rules that individuals, not States only, have rights to gun ownership
Thursday, June 26th, 2008

For the first time in our nation’s history, the US Supreme Court (the highest court in the land whose rulings can only be overruled by amendments to the US Constitution — which is the document that rules our body of government and law) has directly addressed the meaning of the Second Amendment to the US Constitution (“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”) and ruled that said amendment protects an individual’s right to bear arms (own guns). Previously, the Supreme Court has only taken on the issue and ruled on matters pertaining to the individual States’ rights to bear arms in order to maintain a militia but has remained silent on the rights of individuals. This silence has allowed individual states to enact various forms of gun control in order to limit (for the good of the people) individual rights of gun ownership. I realize that this sort of news isn’t usually the kind of fare that we enjoy around here but (since I am a student of political science, history and government) I find this ruling hugely important and worth discussion:

The Supreme Court declared for the first time on Thursday that the Constitution protects an individual’s right to have a gun, not just the right of the states to maintain militias. Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority in the 5-to-4 decision, said the Constitution does not allow “the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home.” In so declaring, the majority found that a gun-control law in the nation’s capital went too far in making it nearly impossible to own a handgun. The decision upheld a federal appeals court ruling that the District of Columbia’s gun law, one of the strictest in the country, went beyond constitutional limits. Not only did the 1976 law make it practically impossible for an individual to legally possess a handgun in the District, but it spelled out rules for the storage of rifles and shotguns. But the long-awaited decision did not necessarily mean that gun laws from coast to coast, many of them far less restrictive than Washington’s, would be swept aside. Joining Justice Scalia were Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Clarence Thomas, Anthony M. Kennedy and Samuel A. Alito Jr. A dissent by Justice John Paul Stevens asserted that the majority “would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons.” Joining him were Justices David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer. The high court’s ruling was the first since 1939 to deal with the scope of the Second Amendment, and the first ever to directly address the meaning of the amendment’s ambiguous, comma-laden text: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The court concluded that the amendment protects an individual right to bear arms, but it also said that the right is not absolute, opening the door for more fights in the future. Lawmakers across the country may look to the decision as a blueprint for writing new legislation to satisfy the demands of constituents who say there is too much regulation of firearms now, or too little, depending on the sentiments in their regions.

Again, I have to stress how monumentally fascinating this is for me. I studied Constitutional Law in college (as my plan was to eventually go to law school) and I know how much of a big deal it is when the US Supreme Court makes a ruling like this. Altho the court qualified their ruling by stating that the individual’s right to bear arms “isn’t absolute”, it’s hugely significant that the court took on the specificity of how the Second Amendment applies to individual citizens. While I personally am for gun control (in that I don’t believe that any ol’ person should just be able to walk into a gun shop and purchase a weapon without some sort of screening process), I have to side with the Supreme Court on this ruling … I’ve always personally have been of the mind that the Second Amendment applies to individual citizens but prior to this ruling that was never made clear by the Supreme Court. I don’t always agree with the rulings of the court (I’m having a hard time swallowing their other recent ruling that the death penalty cannot be applied to cases of child rape because it is “cruel and usual punishment”) but I think they got this one right.

Angelina Jolie Is Still Pregs

'In Touch' magazine has the proof
Thursday, June 26th, 2008

At long last we finally have photographic proof that Angelina Jolie is still pregs and has not given birth to the twin babies that she is expected to bring forth into the world in August. As you may recall, Entertainment Tonight erroneously reported (by way of a fake source) that Angelina gave birth to her babies a few weeks ago. Despite the fact that Brangelina reps officially denied the report was true, ET remained steadfast in their conviction that their story was true … maintaining that since Angelina has not been photographed since their report came out their report still has validity. Today, In Touch magazine provides photographic proof that Angelina Jolie is still very much pregnant. Here are new photos of Angelina snapped on June 22 on the veranda (some may call it a lainai) of the new Brangelina manse in the South of France:

There has been speculation in the world media that Angelina Jolie already had her babies, but just four days ago on June 22nd, In Touch Weekly’s photographer got a rare shot of Angelina still heavily pregnant, taking a break from bed rest. These photos capture the actress hanging out with children Shiloh and Zahara outside Chateau Miraval the home she, Brad and the kids are staying at in the South of France. While her official due date is in August, insiders tell In Touch that she will deliver around July 15.

And there you have it. I *knew* that ET didn’t have a leg to stand on as their bogus story fell apart all around them (once news of the fake Angelina assistant started going around, I was sure their story was totally wrong) but they maintained their story was true based on the fact that no photos exist of Angelina still pregs since their report came out. At this point, they’ll prolly maintain that either these photos were not taken on the date claimed by In Touch or that Angelina is still faking it (by wearing a fake baby bump, a la Katie Holmes) to make people think she’s still pregs.

After the jump, check out close-ups of Angelina and her baby bump …

Marc Anthony’s #1 Fan

He even gets to sleep with her and everything
Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Adoring wife Jennifer Lopez was front and center at hubby Marc Anthony’s concert stop in Madrid, Spain last night looking pleased as punch thruout his performance. Here are a few pics of Marc doing his thing on stage and of J. Lo doting lovingly on her man:

Okay … so I do like giving Marc Anthony a hard time for looking, well, dead … but I can appreciate that he has truly made Jennifer Lopez a happy person. I don’t recall ever seeing J. Lo look this happy and contented with her life. Not only has Marc made her marriage dreams come true (after a couple of false starts with previous husbands) but he also gave her a set of beautiful twins, Emme and Max. Alright, so maybe he doesn’t deserve all the credit but he plays a major part in her happiness. I can respect the man for that … morbid pallor and thirst for human blood notwithstanding ;)

Madonna’s Kids Play It Chill In Central Park

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The fruit of Madonna’s loins — Lourdes, Rocco and her newly adopted son David Banda — spent a lovely afternoon playing with one another in Central Park here in NYC earlier this week. With their nannies at the ready, Lola and Rocco frolicked near and in a fountain while little David kicked back and relaxed in his stroller. Here are a few pics:

Sure looks like a fun way to beat the heat. Madonna’s kids are really enjoying all the fun things that NYC has to offer. Last weekend they enjoyed a baseball game at Yankee Stadium and this week they got to enjoy an afternoon in Central Park … like normal kids. I love it. It’s great seeing all the kids getting along so well … it looks like Madonna has got herself a very happy family.

Rumors Swirl About Lindsay Lohan’s New Album

Despite the fact that she's 'tired of rumors starting'
Thursday, June 26th, 2008

There are new rumors going around messageboards and fansites regarding possible news about Lindsay Lohan’s third album. Now, considering that this news is coming from totally anonymous sources and the information is unconfirmed, all of this info has to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, the news is positive and very interesting so I feel it’s worth posting just in case any or all of it turns out to be true. According to these rumors, Lindsay’s new album will be titled Spirit in the Dark:

Additionally, Spirit in the Dark (if that is the album’s real name) will feature tracks that were produced by Pharrell Williams (of N.E.R.D.), Akon, StarGate and Bloodshy & Avant (the gents who came up with Toxic for Britney Spears). Linds just released the single Bossy (which was written by Ne-Yo) but, according to these rumors, the lead track off the album will be a single called Playground which was produced by Pharrell (apparently the Bossy track was just a one-off meant to generate buzz for Lindsay’s new music) and is scheduled for a radio release date in September. The album itself is due to hit stores on November 4th. Again, all of this is totally unsubstantiated but I understand that Akon did confirm to reporters at the recent ASCAP Awards that he has been working with Lindsay on new music … so … who knows. I just hope that some of this info turns out to be true. I’ve been a fan of L. Lo’s music since the beginning (whatevs, it’s fun, poppy and catchy — check out Magnet if you don’t believe me) and it sounds like she’s ready to take her music up a notch. With producers like these, she’s bound to have a hit.
