More sad news today … Stan Winston, the special effects genius responsible for delighting movie goers in so many movies (far too many to list … but Aliens, Terminator 2, Batman Returns, Jurassic Park, Predator, Edward Scissorhands are just a few), passed away last night at the age of 62 due to complications with multiple myeloma:

Hollywood special-effects maestro Stan Winston has died at age 62. The Oscar-winning visual effects artist died at his home Sunday evening surrounded by family after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a representative from Stan Winston Studio. Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986’s “Aliens, “1992’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” and 1993’s “Jurassic Park.” Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, daughter, brother and four grandchildren.
Of course this is incredibly sad news but I’m still not sure people truly understand what an important genius Stan Winston was. His creativity and inventiveness provided countless movie fans with realistic and sometimes horrifying aliens, creatures and monsters for many, many years. His mark on Hollywood will forever be indelible and he is sure to be missed by all of his countless fans. My condolences go out to his family … this is just such sad news :(
