‘Silken’ Smooth

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Scarlett Johansson stars as Silken Floss in the new Frank Miller movie The Spirit (based on his graphic novel of the same name) which comes out later this year around Xmastime. Here is a poster from and a pic of Scarlett as Silken in the film:

Woot! Everything about The Spirit looks so damn good thus far. I remember how blown away I was when Sin City came out (despite the fact that Bruce Willis [who I tend to dislike in pretty much everything] starred in it) back in 2005. I can only imagine what they’re gonna do FX-wise for this new movie. I think I can forgive Scarlett for stealing away Ryan Reynolds from Alanis Morissette if she does a’ight in this flick :)

Hulk’s Incredible

The TV Guide
Sunday, June 15th, 2008

While most of yesterday was spent dealing with tech issues on the website (which have yet to be resolved but should be all taken care of shortly) and my own manic issues, I did manage to save the end of the day and do something fun. David decided to extend his stay here in LA until this coming Wednesday (he was supposed to go back to NYC late last night) and Sarah stayed at my place last night for her last night in LA so we had a good ol’ time together! First we went out to see The Incredible Hulk:

Man oh man … The Incredible Hulk is awesome! I wouldn’t say it’s better than Iron Man but it’s damn close. The whole story was just solid and much attention was paid to staying true to the comics and to the TV show The Incredible Hulk of the late 70s. The first half of the movie was an homage to the TV series (with fun and inventive cameos by Bill Bixby [who played Bruce Banner in the TV show] and Lou Ferrigno [who played Hulk in the TV show], a nod to scenes from the show — even the theme song made an appearance). This new movie beats the hell out of the Ang Lee Hulk movie … the first 10 mins. are better than the whole first Hulk movie. I’m still amazed that the Hulk’s pants manage to stay on when he gets all big and green … after all these years, those pants just won’t rip off. I was very impressed with the Sandisk product placement … while I doubt that you can really swallow a flash drive and then yak it up and have it still work, I do love my little Sandisk flash drives so I wouldn’t be surprised. I was surprised they didn’t do more to make downtown Toronto look like Harlem, New York. Anyone who’s ever been to Toronto and is familiar with Remington’s, Zanzibar and Sam the Record Man surely caught the poor attempt to make it seem like Hulk and Abomination were fighting in NYC. I loved the Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) cameo but they really should’ve kept the cameo a secret until the movie came out … putting Stark in the TV commercials really ruined the surprise ;( Also, don’t wait until after the credits to see an extra scene … there ain’t one.

But still … the movie rocks balls! I loved it so much, David loved it so much, Sarah loved it so much. I really think that folks who enjoyed Iron Man will also enjoy The Incredible Hulk. There is a bit of cross-over so you can see the Avengers movie coming from a mile away. Brills!!!!

After the movie, we made our way out to Mel’s Drive In in Sherman Oaks, CA for a little late night snackin’ and jukebox listenin’:

I swear, you’d think we never saw a jukebox before. We kept pressing numbers to hear our fave oldies, putting in quarter after quarter … not realizing that it’s all free. Whatevs we had fun.

But alas, Sarah is already well on her way back home to Detroit. I’m bummed we didn’t get to spend more time together but it was great having her in town nonetheless. I’m very happy David is staying with me for a few more days. He has been a godsend this week, I would’ve lost my shizz days ago if it weren’t for him. Plans for tonight are unclear … I do hope to catch some of the NBA Finals at some point … the Lakers have to win tonight or they’re dunzo for good. OY! Happy Sunday, y’all!!!

A Fitting Memorial

Tim Russert Honored
Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Tim Russert was honored this morning as Meet the Press, the NBC News show that he is most known for, opted out of reporting their usual weekly news round-up and decided instead to pay homage to the man who sat in the Meet the Press moderator’s chair for the past 16 years. This week, that moderator’s chair was left empty … and the rest of the show was devoted solely to his memory:

Tim Russert’s chair was empty on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, two days after his unexpected death. But Russert was very much present on the full-hour tribute to this giant of political journalism who hosted NBC’s public-affairs program for more than 16 years. “His voice has been stilled,” began Tom Brokaw, who led the conversation, “and our issue this sad Sunday morning is remembering and honoring our colleague and our friend ….” Brokaw and a half-dozen others were seated in front of the “Meet the Press” set and its angular table, left vacant, where Russert had presided as recently as last week. Brokaw noted that Russert had a large wooden sign in his office that read: “Thou Shalt Not Whine,” which Brokaw then supplemented with “Thou shalt not weep or cry this morning. This is a celebration.” But a bit later he choked up, recalling Russert’s words of awe at how far a working-class kid from Buffalo like himself could rise: “What a country!” he would marvel. Among those gathered were presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin and political pundit Mary Matalin, with Maria Shriver — the former NBC News correspondent and currently California’s first lady — on a remote hookup. All agreed that Russert was tough but fair in his interviewing, and that he, as a former political operative himself, loved politics and politicians. What he didn’t like, said consultant-pundit James Carville, was an elected official or anybody else who wasn’t prepared to face him. “The biggest insult to him was someone who came on and … didn’t take the show seriously,” Carville said. It was a mistake they quickly regretted, because Russert took his stewardship of “Meet the Press” as a sacred trust … However fitting Sunday’s tribute, it was a cruel irony that Russert had become the big story, particularly in the midst of a like-no-other presidential race that he was covering with his customary gusto. Guests he had planned to grill Sunday were senior officials from both campaigns. All that changed with Russert’s death from a heart attack Friday. He was stricken while preparing for the broadcast at his network’s Washington bureau.

Today’s episode of Meet the Press was the most fitting tribute that they could’ve pulled together for Tim Russert, the man and the news reporter. It’s still so shocking that he has been taken from us so suddenly … just 2 days ago! Again I say, our country lost a giant in news media … he will surely be missed and can never be replaced.

Hot Dude Of The Week: Bryan

Weekend Hotness
Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Weee! It’s time for our FIRST Hot Dude of the Week right here on the new version of Pink is the new Blog. I was very fortunate to have a few of the actual Hot Dudes come out for my Pink is the new Blog Relaunch Party this past Wednesday and the swell guys at All American Guys sent me a pic of Bryan so that he could be the first Hot Dude of the Week for the new site:

MMM … Bryan makes a real nice Hot Dude of the Week (he’s actually been featured a few times before) and with a bottle of Pink bubbly in hand, well, I couldn’t resist. Much love goes out to the folks at AAG (Chris especially) for all their amazingness this week. It was great having the guys come out for the party, I understand they had a great time so I’m happy. Oh yes, the shirtlessness helps, too! Enjoy!!!

Lindsay Lohan Does Arena Magazine

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Lindsay Lohan is featured in the July issue of the British magazine Arena … here are a few pics from her photospread:

Linds is lookin’ pretty fierce in these pics. It’s not easy to pull off harsh yellow eyeshadow. The clothes are from the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer collection this year and they look good on her. I’ve been loving all of L. Lo’s recent photoshoots and I am excited that she’s signed on to film more appearances on Ugly Betty (despite pulling her name out of Emmy contention this year, following in Katherine Heigl’s footsteps, because her one TV cameo this year was too short). I’m hopeful that Lindsay’s new movie, Labor Pains, turns out to be a goodie (or, at least worth seeing without considering suicide afterwards — I Know Who Killed Me, I’m talking to you), she’s been on the right track for months now … I’d love to see her success continue.

Cyndi Lauper Does Good Morning America

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Cyndi Lauper made a wee appearance on Good Morning America this past Friday, performing a live two song set for the TV audience (and assembled crowd alike) on GMA’s Bryant Park stage in NYC. Here are a few photos from her performance:

Cyndi performed her gargantuan hit song Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (which you can watch HERE) and her new single Into the Nightlife (which you can watch HERE) taken from her insanely brills new album Bring Ya To Tha Brink. In fact, I love every song — everything about her new album except for the title (which is so bad, IMHO). Brink is the album that Cyndi should’ve released years ago … she finally jumped on board the disco bandwagon and decided to bring the heat to the dancefloor. You can expect to hear songs off this new album in clubs all around the world for some time to come. I’m hoping one of them will be this year’s Umbrella. It’s really a great album … it’s deffo one of the best things to come out this year, again, IMHO.
