TR Knight Is Planning His Exit From ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Contrary to rumors going around that Grey’s Anatomy star TR Knight stormed off the set of the show and quit in a huff, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that no such thing has ever happened. That being said, EW further reports that TR is lookin’ to leave the show as soon as he can and is working quietly (or was trying to) with producers to figure out his exit strategy. It looks like his doctor days are numbered. Here is a pic of TR leaving the Hollywood premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (which took place in Westwood, CA) with his cutie boyfriend Mark Cornelson last night:

The revolving door at Grey’s Anatomy has taken another shocking spin. Multiple sources confirm that T.R. Knight has asked to be released from his contract, a request that both ABC and Grey’s show-runner Shonda Rhimes appear poised to grant. “They’re working out the details now,” whispers an ABC insider. (A network rep was unavailable for comment.) There’s no word on when Knight would make his final appearance, but, contrary to a report on the gossip blog, he has not walked off the show. “He’s still working,” maintains my Grey’s mole. Rumors of Knight’s unhappiness at Grey’s date back to the early days of Isaiahgate. Per an insider, the actor was disappointed that it took Rhimes so long to publicly condemn Washington’s use of the F-word, even as his co-stars (Katherine Heigl, Patrick Dempsey, etc.) rallied to his defense. (The incident led Knight to come out as a gay man.) The boss lady eventually released a statement denouncing Washington’s behavior, but word is, it was too little, too late. Nonetheless, my Grey’s source insists Knight does not want out of his contract for that reason, adding, “He just feels it’s time to move on.” A spokesperson for Knight declined to comment for this story.

I don’t watch the show but I understand that TR’s character on Grey’s isn’t really doing much on the show these days so it sounds like the perfect time to ease him off the show. Perhaps they don’t have to kill off this character, leaving the option open for him to return at some point. I love TR and I want to see him happy. If he isn’t being fulfilled on the show then he should be allowed to … it remains to be seen if Grey’s producers are willing to let him go. I suppose we’ll hear sooner or later if an amicable split can be reached between the parties. In the meantime, TR can take comfort in the fact that he’s still knockin’ boots with the young Mr. Cornelson.

All the best to him, but still, gross. If TR Knight can’t find a bf around his age (35), I think there’s something wrong with him. They are about 15 years apart or so. Sorry but that’s just wrong. If the boyfriend was 35 and TR was 50, that’s not an issue. But 20 and 35…wtf.

  • kristin

Sad to him him go. His character on Grey’s was always one of my favs. Can they kill off Meredith Grey instead???? She’s sooooo whiny! She throws temper tantrums about everything these days. I’m so over her character.

  • Jen

Avi, my brother has been with his partner for 13 years … since my bro was 21 and his partner 36… not that big a deal. It certainly doesn’t warrant a “gross” and “wtf.” The fact that you are so judgmental in this forum is just kind of weird.

  • nonino

Well, Avi, there are 16 years between my parents and they have been together for 42 years come May. It’s just numbers and regarding TR Knight and his boyfriend, they’re both adults. Get over it.

  • Betsy

I’m sorry but I’m kind of sick of stars being whiny and quitting shows. The fans are the ones that suffer because of actors’ personal squabbles on set or with salaries. I really wish they could just all grow up and make tv shows instead of making the viewers suffer by quitting for personal, rather than professional reasons.

  • kar

i hope this doesn’t happen. george is my fav character on GA. i agree with kristin. i know meredith is the main character but she is getting soooo annoying!

  • las

another whiny actor quitting a show that made him a star. big deal. lots of luck in his future acting gigs. he’ll need it.

  • LOVECarrie

I understand how he feels. George O’Malley was one of my faves, but he’s been so underused this season….

  • Lisa

NO! I love George!! He can’t leave!!
He should be happy he has a job, its hard to make the transition from TV the movies, and he doesn’t look like he will be getting movie offers. But I could be wrong.

  • Ashley

good. His character wasn’t very good

  • Avi

Sorry but a 35 yo who needs to date a 20 yo is just weird. I have no issue with age, but that’s a big gap. Yes, age is a number and yes, it DOES warrant a gross and a wtf. Ellen and Portia are 35 and 50. That is different. So, apparently I can’t have an opinion as everytime I post someone always has a problem with it. I could care less who TR dates. All I am saying is that I bet this relationship will not last. And age plays a huge factor.

  • Karly

i don’t watch the show anymore
    it blows hard nowadays
but george was my favorite so i’m somewhat sad

  • Greg

“Sorry but a 35 yo who needs to date a 20 yo is just weird.”

Funny, I don’t ever recall TR Knight saying that he NEEDS to date a 20 year old. The fact that you’re adding motivations to Knight’s relationship says a lot about you and your biases.

  • steph

George was the most annoying character on the show until recently “I’m in love with Meredith…. no wait, Callie…. no wait, Izzie…. why doesn’t anyone love me??” Izzie is just as bad, although this season she is less whiny.
The only good things about this show are Christina and Bailey!

  • Avi

Funny Greg, I don’t recall asking for your opinion. I always believed age is JUST A NUMBER. I’m not anti age difference. Adding motivations? You are really over-analyzing my post.

  • aimie

NOOOOOO!!! ugh that sucks, i love me some mcsweetie!

  • Paz

steph – I totally agree. I stopped watching last season, but George always irritated the crap out of me, even more than Meredith.
As for the age thing, I honestly find it kind of weird, but to each his own. I find it kind of insensitive to say that he can’t find someone his own age.

  • WOW….

  • Trey

Avi, you’re having a bad case of cognitive dissonance. Ask you keep harping on age, clearly you do not believe it’s just a number.

The other commenters are right. You have a problem you ought to stop and consider.

  • Ella

I stopped watching that show a long while ago. Everyone is too whiney on that show and I can’t stand Meredith and Derek.

  • sugarrhill

Thank God! Will he take Hiegl with him too?

  • Jerry

    Ah, well.

Now is not the time to be quitting a job, what with networks scaling back on scripted series again and a SAG strike looming…

  • Ran

Avi What is your problem? Jealousy perhaps? (age) Numbers don’t make a difference if you care for one another. Experience on the other hand does. So get your facts.. eh .. straight.

  • Joanne

I would say he is feeling uncomfortable about the gay-ectomy that is going on at Grey’s. Actor Brooke Smith was unceremoniously ‘let go’ without any warning. There was no resolution for her lesbian character or her relationship with Dr Callie. They just filmed her driving away from the hospital! They are also de-bisexualing another character. ABC wants to eliminate gay storylines … Ever since Katherine Heigl’s comments about the writing, I have thought there was something not quite right, going on behind the scenes of that show …
